23.01.2022 In celebration of #NationalWaterWeek water We’d like to share with you some of the captivating bodies of waters found within the #CAMCollection: The vibrant seascape from well-known Australian impressionist E. Philips Fox Penleigh Boyd’s Winter Calm, Frankston, depicting the Frankston Foreshore circa 1920. ... Frederick McCubbin’s ‘Golden Sunlight’, painted using the ‘scumble’ technique, where the artist builds up many layers of thinly applied paint giving a transparent effect which is later rubbed with a pumice stone to give a smooth surface, allowing the colours from the different layers to show through. 19.01.2022 How does a conservator tackle cracking in paintings? 18.01.2022 ASK A CURATOR DAY ? "First Nations art and material culture was collected in the early days, like most settler museums worldwide. Indeed, anthropologist Sir Baldwin Spencer (18601929) was involved in advising on acquisitions in CAM's early days. However sadly, more is known about the donor than the artist, the location, or meaning of the work. The most recent work acquired by CAM is this magnificent pai...nting by Betty Kuntiwa Pumani, winner of the Len Fox Painting Award in 2019." ’ ? This is hard to call, can I name one and not all? Weak of me you might say. For different reasons, I relish the artists and curators with whom I have worked. It is a particular dance of respect and challenge, leading and repose, listening and declaring, exhilaration and hard yakka. . . . 18.01.2022 #CAMReflections | Curator Kirsty Grant describes an unexpected find she came across in the CAM Collection earlier this year: The palette is vivid acid green, deep pink and bright yellow the application of paint is lively, and if we read the disapproving expressions of the older women, the boy’s amusement and pointed finger, as well as the apparent about-face of the woman in yellow, an interesting narrative begins to unfold. The painter of this lively scene was Yvonne A...tkinsona significant female modernist of her day who is today, as most of her female contemporaries, little-known and underrated. 14.01.2022 I stood mesmerised by the intricate and deft etching on a bark from my own Dja Dja Wurrung Country [pictured]. Struck by the weight of story and history that sat behind a sheet of toughened glass in front of me, I wondered about the hands that made those incisionsAs an artist obsessed with reclaiming the technologies and practice of my forebears, museums have become (at times) an uneasy home for me, strange environments in which we are surrounded by the legacy of our famil...ies, yet in an alien atmosphere that seeks to catalogue and quantify. 14.01.2022 You asked, and a curator answered! For #AskACurator Day, curator and writer Naomi Cass responded to your questions about the #CAM collection, life as a curator, favourite foods and much more! You can head to our Instagram story (http://tiny.cc/wbkwsz) to check out the answers or follow along here as we share them with you. Thank you to everyone who submitted a question and got involved! Our first question was from Bev Lewis, who asked: - ...? ? CAM has two separate storage areas, one for art objects on the ground floor at the rear of the building, with around 2,500 items, plus those yet to be catalogued. There is also a most intriguing and deliciously cool, dry space in the basement for the social history items, as yet we are unable to number. Works are housed according to their needs: framed works are on racks, unframed works in solander boxes and plan presses, for example. , ? Bringing to life art and social history collections in unexpected, challenging and insightful ways. Working with living artists to wrangle their love of historical art, making entry points between different artforms and material culture. Weaving the past into the contemporary and the present back into the past. Sounds like the Castlemaine Art Museum! 14.01.2022 ASK A CURATOR DAY ' ? Definitely pomegranates, for the eyes, the taste and spirit. Fresh pomegranate, dried, pomegranate syrup with soda in a long glass, in soup and salad, but most gloriously with cheese or resplendent in a fruit bowl. Sadly, I donate my entire crop to the tiny possums who live in my pomegranate tree. ? ... Sometimes selecting artists is about being inspired and lead by the art. This requires research, looking, listening: being out there in the world. Sometimes curating is about having an idea, and literally hunting for work which brings the idea to life and takes it into new areas. When working with living artists, curating is a partnership. . . . Image: Elma Roach ‘Still life - Pomegranates and Jug’ c.1935 oil on canvas. Castlemaine Art Museum.
