18.01.2022 Remembering Agnes Eliza Wilson 1856 ~ 1859 In July this year we received an email from Shirley who was searching for the grave of a little girl who died in 1859. We spent some time searching through our burial registers and studying the old cemetery maps and finally we located the grave and advised Shirley, who was thrilled.... Last Friday, Shirley and her family travelled to Castlemaine from the Mornington Peninsula and held a memorial service and unveiled the new headstone they had arranged to be placed on the unmarked grave of little Agnes Eliza A beautiful service and wonderful that little Agnes Eliza has been remembered with such a beautiful headstone. As a thank you the Wilson family presented the Trust with a copy of their recently published family history, a beautiful gift and we are very grateful and so happy we could help. See more

16.01.2022 Had to take a break from all the mowing to photograph these beautiful Scilla Peruvianas. There’s a mass of these bulbs in the old section of the cemetery that pop up every spring

13.01.2022 Dr James Hutchison arrived in Victoria from Scotland in 1852 He made his way to Castlemaine and set up a tent at Moonlight Flat and started treating the many diggers on the goldfields. Dr Hutchison later became resident surgeon at the Castlemaine Hospital, a position he held for 16 years. He was also Sergeant Major of the Castlemaine Volunteer Corps from 1860 until 1881. Dr Hutchison continued with his private medical practice until his death in 1881 aged 53.... The funeral was described in the Mount Alexander Mail as one of the largest that have left the town with the Castlemaine Volunteer Corps joined by contingents from Malmsbury and Maldon. Also in attendance at the funeral were representatives from the Castlemaine Pioneers and Old Residents Association, the Castlemaine Council and the Castlemaine Hospital committee. The inscription on the bottom of Dr James Hutchison headstone reads Erected by a few friends See more
