24.01.2022 Life is uncertain, chi is certain. Worry limits options, chi creates infinite options. Worry closes doors, chi opens doors. Worry doesn’t change anything, chi is transformational. Don’t be a worrier, be a chi warrior!

22.01.2022 Move timeless ... Moving meditation follows the same principles as in sitting or standing meditation. Keep your mind on what you are doing, be in the moment, do...n't let the mind wander around. Don't rush from one movement to the other, give time and space to every movement. Let the breath flow deep and fill the whole body. Music Credit: Hoogway

22.01.2022 Why learn WingChun when you can learn Singapore's very own unique martial arts known as SingaFist. Dominic is the head coach of Taichokun. With interest in his school slowly dying, what is he doing to try to keep SingaFist alive?

21.01.2022 It’s the law of yin and yang that if things go bad, they will then go good. It’s hard to see this while we are stuck in what feels like the downward spiral. But... there’s plenty we can do to lift ourselves up such as limit social media scrolling to 7 minutes at a time (I experimented with this and after this it turns into enervating toxic chi), do some squats because glute work can break the downward spiral and negative talk, it’s the ‘rise-up’ muscle (acu. point GB30) and the most neglected one these days. And pivot now while there’s a gap (everyone’s distracted). I’ll be discussing all of this in Thursday’s coffee chat webinar with Justin from ASEA, and I’ll be showing glute boosting moves - my mate Nathan @chen_taiji_australia will demo these in a youtube that will be up at the same time. Tune in for tips to make this transition time work for you and join the move back from gloom to greatness. Register: bit.ly/jostwebinar See more

19.01.2022 Good old style!

19.01.2022 When you wake up before dawn, the lightness of the night still covers you with calmness. The air you breathe is fresh and carries the smell of the morning dew.... The wind blews lightly and caresses the skin, awakens the senses. The sun at the horizon, behind the mountains slowly rises and the wonderful play of colors in the sky warms your heart with joy. Morning Qigong @ Five Dragon Temple Mt. Wudang back in 2011 What a wonderful time ...

16.01.2022 "The ancient Irish had a saying: 'You don't give a man a weapon until you've taught him how to dance.' In other words, a different kind of learning is required ...before someone can be truly trusted with social power and potent things like weapons. If a man does not know the wounds of his own soul, he can deny not just his own pain, but also be unmoved by the suffering of other people. More than that, he will tend to put his wound onto others. He may only be able to see the wound that secretly troubles him when he forcefully projects it into someone else, in forms of abuse or violence. So in the old culture-making idea, in order to properly bear arms a person must first become disarmed, as in becoming vulnerable and connected to something meaningful and supportive of life. The idea of forging the temperament of young men took precedence over the idea of simply giving them weapons at a certain age. The tempering of the souls involved discovering what kind of anger each might carry and learning about the inner line where anger turned into blind rage. Becoming tempered also meant immersing in the sorrow of one's life and thereby being in touch with the grief of the world." - Michael Meade

16.01.2022 Learning a transformational practice such as Tai Chi or Yoga is the best investment you’ll ever make. Being able to change your mood on demand, shut off the neg...ative inner dialogue, and re-energise in 15 minutes is absolutely priceless! There will always be uncertainty and drama, there will always be stuff hitting the fan, but add a chi practice and you’ll always have a way to feel good. I couldn’t get by without my Chen Tai-chi and vibrant celestial meditation (VCM). Love it! See more

14.01.2022 Which came first: Chinese open hand or weapon martial arts? Thank you for addressing this complex question in your posts, and feel free to continue the dialogue.... Here are my comments: There is no definitive answer. Let’s look at open hand forms first: Shuai jiao, Chinese wrestling, may have its origin in jiao di horn butting rituals modeled on the ox, likely practiced as early as the Shang Dynasty (1766-1066 BCE) and referred to not long thereafter in the Li Ji (Book of Rites). There are also shamanic influences. The prowess of the tiger, bear, snake and other creatures inspired shamanic dance, such as the 3,000 BCE Nuo Festival, the Pacing of Yu (based on a lame bear), and the Han Dynasty Crane Dance, all providing motifs found in qigong and martial arts. Now, weapons. Ancient weapons were developed for hunting, military, ceremonial, and theatrical use. Interestingly some of China’s earliest swords, dating to 1,000 BCE have bronze handles, intricate inlaid designs, and meteor-iron blades. Scholars believe that these swords were developed not for combat but specifically for ceremony, perhaps to invoke the spirit of the stars associated with metal blades. In Taoist temples today, the ancient Pacing of Yu is a Big-Dipper star dance, performed with a sword. And as others have pointed out, some open hand forms, such Xingyi Quan, may have evolved from spear techniques. I remember a private class with my first Xingyi Quan teacher, B. P. Chan, in which he demonstrated and taught me how the Xingyi Hawk movement can be practiced in exactly the same manner open hand or with a spear. Indeed, one of the best ways to train fa jin (discharge of power) in the martial arts is with a staff or spear, and I require all of my students who wish to master the Taiji punch to train with these weapons. As far as the link between Shaolin martial arts and Bodhidharma, this was disproven long ago. No, Bodhidharma did not practice qigong or martial arts, yet the myth is interesting and may serve a purpose if it inspires us to train harder. 13.01.2022 Fear can be contagious. Being surrounded by fearful people, fear-inducing news headlines, and losing the sense of control over our own lives is the perfect stor...m for a fear fest, and this is bad for our health. Fear is useful to avoid dark alleys, animals with big teeth etc, but if its ongoing it makes us weak, it is disempowering and hopelessness, confusion and anxiety will grow. Lifestyle medicine is the most powerful antidote because this is not the kind of fear you can suppress with alcohol or manage with drugs (pharmaceutical or recreational). Disengage from the media, live in a way that builds health and chi (chi cycle) and stay fiercely focussed on your personal direction. See more

13.01.2022 Do not block rising thoughts and also do not follow them. These are two important and fundamental principles which we follow and put into practice in the Yi Sho...u Dan Tian - The Mind Sinks To The Dan Tian excersise. If we are not supposed to block rising thoughts but also should not follow them, what happens to us in this moment? When you apply these principles, then there will be an interruption in the stream of endless thoughts, silence will naturally arise and a unlimited space opens up in your mind. You will be present in the moment, the mind has nothing to cling to and no place where it can wander to, in this moment a taste, a glimpse of eternity will be experienced. With regular practice and contemplation we will realize more and more that our thoughts are energy waves, which produce and carry infinite powers within. "Every thought has weight" quote from the book 'Freedom' by Ismet Himmet This inevitably truth results in the fact that when we know that every thought has weight, that also our actions which resulting from our thinking, also carry the same weight in themselves and thus everything will be manifested accordingly to our thinking in our lives. Every thought has weight, every action has weight, we live the consequences of our thinking in every moment, whether we like it or not. Each of us lives his own and unique reality in his mind! In meditation we learn to see clearly that if we follow a thought, that this will creates further thoughts, then these thought will be paired with the emotions, we create stories which carries us mentally somewhere. We can sit in our room with our eyes closed and legs crossed, but our restless mind with endless thoughts carries us to a distant land, lets us fight a war, lets us experience a joyful moment with the family, lets bind us to grief and fear. Realizing all of this is in itself an immeasurable treasure for any practitioner. Stuck thought patterns can be broken through, with time and practice and new views of oneself, the life and reality can be opened up and established. You don't have to continue to think of what you are thinking now! You can break the game!

13.01.2022 Throughout the day our minds are busy with thousand things. We are constantly exposed to an enormous flood of information that keep us in a certain state of mi...nd. Trying to overcome restlessness with more activity will lead you to exhaustion at some point. There is great power in silence.

12.01.2022 Where there is stagnation of Qi or Blood, there is pain, discomfort or tightness. These are obstructions to flow and obstructions to the transference of informa...tion around the body system. At an early stage, these may lead to mental or physical disease but at later stages they may contribute to the development of more serious illness. For the internal practitioner, where there is obstruction, there is a break in the cycle of the body’s conversion process. As efficiency of this cycle decreases, so does efficiency of the body ability to generate Qi. Whilst there are many internal methods that may aid with this, it is worth remembering the fundamental principle of freeing these obstructions up through intelligent and conscious body movement. 08.01.2022 SELF-RESTRAINT So many of our social interactions depend on self-restraint. We learn how not to throw temper tantrums, how to be polite, how to show respect, an...d how to wait our turn. We all know this. Without it, our daily lives would be chaos and daily encounters would be untrustworthy and violent. Spiritual practice takes this a step further. We don’t merely try to act according to convention, we try to transform ourselves so that there’s no conflict between how we behave and how we feel. The important consideration is to be compassionate. Then it isn’t a matter of choosing between what we want and what we ought to do. Being compassionate is the opposite of so much of our tendencies today: lying, cheating, deception, hidden profit, anger, hatred, blame, and untrammeled self-gratification. You see, to be compassionate is always to ask about greater considerations. It’s to ask how you can relieve suffering. It’s to ask about improving the lot of everyone. What begins with self-restraint evolves into universal love. _________ Arhat (Luohan), ca. 1000 Stoneware with three-color glaze H. 41 1/4 in. (104.8 cm); W. 36 in. (91.4 cm); D. 33 in.
