23.01.2022 Well it was over before it started, my trip east! First day of lockdown and I considered all the unfinished projects that I’d been waiting to finish and decided the moment called for something new. Maybe you feel like that also? Hot off the needles is a variation I did with a box of Summer Swirl , and it’s something you could complete in the remaining days of lockdown instead of cleaning windows or making jam. Try it with any of your stash and even disregard the eyelet row...s and add in some texture with different yarn. If you have a box of Summer Swirl and feel daunted casting on 449 stitches then try this or maybe a throw rug, summer top or cardi, as long as the pattern requires 800m or less you can experiment. Patons have discontinued this product, I have a few boxes left and that’s it, as soon as stocks have gone there’s no more. Enjoy your days. See more
21.01.2022 This is my version of the climate change scarf, I cheated slightly by using Lang Mille Colori Baby fine merino super wash wool in a cool colour first then changed to a hot colour creating the same effect. I won’t give this one away I’ll wear it myself as a protest and I think we should all make one to wear ourselves. I have ready to go kits available for this climate change scarf. Buy one for yourself and one for a friend.
16.01.2022 To spin a yarn, a tall story? It’s also the action of turning fibres into yarn. In Medieval times poor families had a need for yarn to make their own clothes and practically all girls and unmarried women would be kept busy spinning, hence the word Spinster! It’s a relaxing meditative craft and the end result is lovely yarn you can use in the natural state or experiment dyeing methods using native bark, leaves and flora, vegetable dyes and even avocado seeds. I have an Ashford traveller for sale at the moment.
12.01.2022 When I am open again on February 18th I will have an assortment of lovely wooden knitting needles, mixed sizes and lengths, they are on special for $5.50 a pair. For the crocheters there are new hooks in stock with lightweight soft rubber handles for crocheting comfort, and gorgeous crochet hook pouches with sets of 20 bamboo hooks sizes 1.00 mm - 10.00 mm. All at a reasonable price.
07.01.2022 Happy Valentine’s Day. A person burns 55 calories by knitting for 1/2 hour so it wouldn’t hurt to top up with a couple of chocolates today. When I knitted this heart it reminded me of a tip for knitting with 2 yarns to prevent it becoming too tight as you carry the yarn not being used along the back. You loop the 2nd yarn over the needle every few stitches and then drop the loop off on the way back. Has anyone had success with this method? I haven’t. I found I kept forgetting and knitting the looped stitch and it seemed far too loose at the back. Queen Victoria was a great knitter and so is Julia Roberts, Vanna White, Cameron Diaz and Julianna Margulies! Have a lovely day.
04.01.2022 We’ve all fallen in love with a particular yarn, had to buy it and then can’t think what to use it for. It’s all about choosing the right yarn for the job. Colour, texture, style of pattern. I’ve made plenty of mistakes over the years but now surrounded by yarn every day, feeling it, mesmerised by the colours it begins to spark ideas and I have time to give it some thought. I think it’s important to come and touch and slowly drink in the texture and hues, looking at different... skeins together and see how they work. There’s a lot of time and effort that goes into making something and it needs to be satisfying not put away because you’re unhappy with the end result. Scarves and shawls are a good way to experiment, a simple style, no need for a perfect fit and a blank canvas to try different textures and stitches, and you’re not spending a lot of money on yarn that doesn’t work. Try some Fair Isle or Aran pattern on a small section amongst plain stocking stitch, it’s amazing how a few lines can turn something into a unique item, or add a border with some contrast stitching. Yarn comes in a multitude of graduated colour these days, like this subtle blend in Monet , extra fine merino yarn. But if colour isn’t you and you prefer a natural or monochrome palette it’s surprising how many shades there are even in white. Think of those traditional Aran fishermen’s sweaters with the heavy textured cables and patterns, they are spectacular in their simplicity. Feeling inspired? See more
03.01.2022 I will be open next Thursday 4th Feb but then due to family commitments in Victoria I will be closed until Thursday 18th February. If you are desperate for supplies call or text me on 0455 540 163 and I can arrange for someone to open the shop for you. You have all possibly done this at some time but I have recently finished off the neckline of a jacket which had a band knitted as an extension to the R and L fronts, which joined at the centre back. A neat way of joining the 2 flaps is to put both needles adjacent to each other and with a spare needle cast off both sets of stitches together leaving a seamless join. No irritating bulky join at the back of your neck then.
01.01.2022 And there’s more kits, pop in and see. A prepacked kit Denim Cable scarf is available in 4 different colours. A luscious blend of lambs wool and cotton, so soft and cosy. It includes 4 balls of Denim yarn from Italy and free pattern to make this gorgeous scarf. A delight to knit or crochet with.
