24.01.2022 The gender pay gap can make a significant difference to the retirement incomes of women. Some leading Australian companies disclose their gender pay gap and adopt practices to mitigate this. Others don't think it is an issue worth reporting on. Find out who: http://csr.catalyst.org.au/

24.01.2022 Unions have released an extensive examination of corporate wrongdoing, prepared by The Australia Institute. Australia is facing a corporate crime wave yet the ...Liberals have cut funding for corporate regulators and slashed 3926 jobs. A national ICAC is a permanent response to dealing with corruption and shining a light on misconduct wherever it occurs. However, when it comes to the crunch, it seems Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull is prepared to put the interests of big business ahead of ordinary working Australians.

23.01.2022 7-Eleven workers continue to be ripped off. A video shows a worker paying back a share of the minimum wage they received. In light of the recent 7-Eleven wage scandal, you would think 7-Eleven would do everything to ensure that its franchisees do not exploit workers. Shame.

22.01.2022 Qatar 2022 has appointed Impactt to monitor the improvement of workers' rights on the back of a damning report by Amnesty International. Our researcher Martijn Boersma talks to ABC NewsRadio's Tracey Holmes about what difference these consultancies can make.

22.01.2022 Andrew Forrest has called on the Australian government to consider legislation similar to the UK Modern Slavery Act to combat human rights abuses in supply chains. Unfortunately Justice Minister Michael Keenan prefers to adopt a wait-and-see approach. Catalyst Australia researcher Martijn Boersma, who was a member of a supply chains working group initiated by the government says it is naive to assume Australian companies are not implicated in supply chain abuses. A non-paywall version of the AFR article can be found here: http://catalyst.org.au//Andrew_Forrest_calls_on_government

21.01.2022 Sydney folk, The Australia Institute's Chief Economist Richard Denniss will be in town next Tuesday 29th March to launch his new book "Econobabble: How to Decode Political Spin and Economic Nonsense" along with Mike Secombe from the Saturday Paper. Essential reading this election year!

19.01.2022 Civil society organisations, among which Catalyst Australia and The Australia Institute, have released a joint statement on business and human rights in Australia. The statement urges the Government to adopt a National Action Plan and recommends steps to implement the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. https://www.theguardian.com//on-corporate-human-rights-aus

18.01.2022 The Australian Government's has ignored a set of robust recommendations made by a multi-stakeholder working group on slavery and human trafficking, and has instead opted for empty rhetoric: "Over the next 12 months, the Australian Government will work collaboratively with business and civil society to: - create a suite of awareness-raising materials for business;... - further consider the feasibility of a model for large businesses in Australia to publicly report on their actions to address supply chain exploitation; - examine options for an awards program for businesses that take action to address supply chain exploitation; and - explore the feasibility of a non-regulatory, voluntary code of conduct for high risk industries." The Government naively continues to rely on a degree of coincidence between the self-interest of businesses and broader public concerns, while neglecting to adequately address the fact that more than half of all human trafficking and slavery victims are located in the Asia-Pacific region.

18.01.2022 Catalyst researcher Martijn Boersma spoke to Paul Turton on ABC Newcastle about the Gender Equality at Work Dashboard and Report. You can hear the interview below.

17.01.2022 "Minister accused of killing supply chain abuse findings" Justice Minister Michael Keenan has failed to respond to a report of a multi-stakeholder working group he set up recommending laws to stop exploitation in supply chains. Non-paywall: http://goo.gl/P7TcDG

17.01.2022 A report by the newly established Centre for Future Work finds that the decline of Australian manufacturing is not inevitable. Listen to Jim Stanford's conversation with Fran Kelly on RN Breakfast this morning: http://www.abc.net.au//reviving-australia's-manufa/7469400. Download the report here: https://t.co/3ssf49oEu9, and be sure to follow the Centre for Future Work on Twitter: https://twitter.com/CntrFutureWork

16.01.2022 According to the ILO, progress on the gender pay gap is so slow that a young woman entering the workforce today will not see the gap close in her working lifetime. See how Australia's top 50 companies stack up: http://csr.catalyst.org.au/

14.01.2022 Australian businesses have recently been implicated in serious labour abuses, both within and beyond Australia’s borders. A new report by Catalyst Australia and The Australia Institute examines legislative developments aimed at tackling slavery and trafficking in other jurisdictions, and argues that Australia must learn from these measures in the face of urgent human rights issues.

10.01.2022 "It is no longer possible or acceptable for Australian Government and companies morally and legally to ignore the rights of workers impacted by their activities."

09.01.2022 Catalyst Australia researcher Martijn Boersma speaks to 2SER host Annamarie Reyes about exploitation and slavery in supply chains, and what legislative measures the Australian Government must take.

08.01.2022 Unfortunately, most issues don't just go away if ignored or acted upon halfheartedly: the Federal Government and Australian companies continue to fail to protect workers in supply chains. Little has changed since a 4corners investigation in 2015 discovered the exploitation of migrant workers in fresh food supply chains, and what was true then holds true now: cracking down on migrant workers is not how to hold supermarkets to account. Together with @TheAustraliaInstitute, Ca...talyst has outlined legislative reform options for the Federal Government to consider: http://catalyst.org.au//Human_Rights_in_the_Supply_Chains_ While the licensing of labour hire firms in New South Wales and Victoria represent encouraging developments, much still needs to be done to protect the most vulnerable workers in supply chains.

06.01.2022 In line with Catalyst Australia's research published in March, KMPG finds that companies pay lip service on gender diversity.

04.01.2022 Labour exploitation in global supply chains is rampant. While meaningful action is being taken in a number of jurisdictions around the world, the Australian government is not responding to growing international concerns.

04.01.2022 Our colleagues at The Australia Institute found that cutting the company tax rate won’t create jobs or boost growth. Surely the big four banks are getting enough from working Australians without a $2 billion tax giveaway...

01.01.2022 Human Rights Watch has published a report highlighting the exploitation of Indonesian children by big tobacco companies. It is a little known fact that the Asia-Pacific region has the largest number of child labourers in the world: almost 78 million For a moment, consider that seven countries in the Asia-Pacific region comprise Australia's top ten import sources, which means that child labour is a significant problem for Australian authorities, companies, investors and cons...umers.
