24.01.2022 Our updated DVD on CAT for Horses is well on its way now - It will only be available on line for those overseas (until postage requirements change) and in either USB or on line for Australian and New Zealand folks. It will still be a while and in the updated version we will be focusing on a horse who has a fear of strangers and a fear of picking up her feet for trimming. There will of course be some of the original information in our new edition and those who have already purchased the original CAT DVD (fear of horse rugs and the Brumbies fear of people and handling) will be eligible for a discount for part 2

16.01.2022 I am hearing people speak of CAT H as desensitisation again :-( Just to put it out there because it is addressed in detail in our new DVD series (that is well on the way to completion now)....it is not desensitisation. CAT H works with operant conditioning not classical and it is reserved for horses who have a history of fear. These horses are afraid of the consequences to them when they are near the trigger of their fear - CAT H changes the consequences for them (from fear...Continue reading

15.01.2022 WOW CAT is sure becoming the flavour of the FB 'week' thanks to a presentation by Prof Rosales-Ruiz at this years Art of Science and Training Conference. I must get my finger out and get these new videos narrated and up demonstrating the links between CAT and Polyvagal Theory. You know as much as it frustrates us that it is taking so long for some people to recognise the value of CAT (despite our constant reminders to some of the same exact people who are now posting about CAT), better late than never. Here is the FB page to the 2020 conference...lets hope Prof's presentation will be available for us on their website for us at the other end of the world. https://www.facebook.com/The-Art-and-Science-of-Animal-Training-1460845514215463/?tn-str=k*F
14.01.2022 This is probably the best explanation of Polyvagal Theory I have read. In our mastery workshops this is what we practice with and for our horses
13.01.2022 Hi everyone, I was sent a video this morning and I really like it. I am sure allot of you may have already seen it but I wanted to address something here. Warrick explains that he perhaps was not demonstrating CAT H in some previous videos and this is true but what I love about this video is what he explains he gets from CAT H - one of the important things is all about our horses thresholds. That we respect them and allow our horse to set the threshold. For those of you who ...know my work we prefer to be off lead for this, because the lead can hold cues that tell our horse 'this lead shows you the distance you can leave me'. If a horse is in fear I can guarantee you the distance from the trigger will be further away than any lead rope (in the beginning). But even though he explains that he was not really in CAT H for this horse he respected the threshold and as soon at at point as he was approaching he noticed the horses body language and stopped. One of those signs was that the horses head turned and there was also a snort - this is our horse asking for a moment - just hang human and wait till I process whether you are safe for me or not - most likely because of experiences before this encounter. So it seems as Warrick explains that he did not need CAT -H for this horse, as all the horse may have needed is a moment and Warrick gave this to the horse. You see this is one of benefits of the CAT H information we have available - you may not have a CAT H horse but we can use the information from CAT H and make it applicable to all our encounters with horses. This horse also began to approach - Warrick describes what we see at the Switchover phase (but I dont think this horse needed to switchover - just seemed to be a little misunderstood by some people in the past) - the strong and confident movements in approach is a benefit to CAT H and this is where our confidence and mastery workshops take our horses - those with previous histories of fear or not. But what we do see is that those horses whose emotions are listened to and honoured in an empathetic way become more confident and masterful. https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=231429958381815 See more
12.01.2022 Our new group workshop is now open. The cost is $88.00 Aus and the below link will get you to the course as well if you scroll down you can see the contents. We only take small numbers in each group so that we can respect coaching privacy if any student wishes to participate. Once it is full I will close off the enrollments so if you are interested but want to wait - please drop me a line and I can let you know when the next group opens. https://the-australian-clicker-connection.teachable.com/p/b
12.01.2022 FINAL CALL: We have two more spots available for this workshop session if anyone is interested before we close enrollments. The workshop usually runs for 3 months and it is all at your own leisure - built into the cost are 3 video coaching sessions on the concepts we promote in the workshop, and access to the material will remain open to you after you have completed the workshop. A new workshop will open in approximately 3 months. https://the-australian-clicker-connection.teachable.com/p/b
09.01.2022 The Australian Clicker Connection has opened ‘The Building Blocks that can Create Confidence and Mastery for Horses and their Humans’ on a new platform and is open for enrollments. In this workshop we look at what stress means for our horses and some of the ways we can identify stress; consider our horses nervous system states a little differently than what you may be used to; learn ways to help create autonomy for our horse (and us) and learn some of the movement tasks that ...can go towards helping our horse become confident and masterful. It generally takes a participant about 3 months to complete this workshop as there is the opportunity to submit three (3) coached videos which are shared with the other participants in that same group and a webinar on a topic of the participants choosing. We find that this is the most useful and productive way to learn from like minded people in a safe environment. For this reason, we only accept a small number of people in each workshop. We use the clicker in our training, but it does not matter if you are new to clicker training, because we provide a free basic introduction to clicker training on enrollment. This workshop is for everyone. Those who want to empower their horses more with confidence and mastery; those who want to learn a little more about stress and how stress and anxiety can affect our horse (and what they can do about it); and those who have a horse who can, at times, seem anxious. This is not though a workshop on dealing with specific problems that are created by stress and anxiety. If this is your situation, please contact us directly so we can better guide your path. 08.01.2022 We need to clarify something that has been noted in an article that is doing the rounds on FB. The author suggests that in CAT we are creating pressure for our horse and that we release this pressure when our horse offers a calm like signal (not exact but my paraphrasing). This is not correct. In CAT we do not offer our horse any pressure and or then release. Simply -CAT is NOT pressure and release. CAT is always done UNDER the threshold we are only close enough for our horse... to notice the trigger of fear - our horse learns to operate on that trigger by offering a calm like signal OR any sign that is inconsistent with fleeing (or aggression). WE then give our horse distance. Originally it was technically considered negative reinforcement as CAT is operant. Over the years, as our focus turns to processes that involve cognition, polyvagal theory and emotions, we have come to see CAT as something quite different and there is far more out there than the behavioural explanation it once was. It is no longer in a box. See more

Abnormal Compensatory Posture is also observed to b...e associated with impairment of emotional regulation, hyper-vigilant or dissociative behaviors, and presumed dominance of the sympathetic axis of the Automatic Nervous System (Fight or Flight). This ANS imbalance may be tied into long-term disruption of mind-body-emotion integration, parallel to that seen in human victims of illness, trauma, abuse and neglect.Recent research has shown certain postures to be associated with specific behaviors in horses... https://ivcjournal.com/normal-and-abnormal-equine-posture/
