04.01.2022 OFFICIAL STATEMENT: The Catholic Church in Tasmania welcomes the governments plans to allow up to 40 people to attend religious ceremonies from this weekend.... The Catholic community is grateful that there is more opportunity to attend Sunday Masses, now that the government has increased church attendance from 20 to 40 people, said Archbishop of Hobart, the Most Reverend Julian Porteous. While we are not yet able to return to normal, this announcement by the government is a significant step forward, and we pray in the coming weeks there will be a further easing of restrictions. Archbishop Porteous said Tasmanian Catholic parishes are managing a staged response to the easing of restrictions very well, and that many parishes have been offering Mass to limited numbers of people while complying with government and health requirements. It has been a challenge for some parishes to meet these requirements and it has meant the necessity for a booking system for Mass, but it is welcome progress on the way to a fuller resumption of normal parish life. Our parish priests have been following strict cleaning regimes and other safety measures including the use of hand sanitiser, and social distancing within the church, and will continue to do so. Archbishop Porteous said the experience of not being able to attend Mass or participate in Confession has been a trial for many Catholics. Receiving the sacrament of the Eucharist at Mass and taking part in the sacrament of Confession is a normal part of the faith life of practicing Catholics. We are a sacramental people. Our encounter with the Lord is via the sacraments. It is through the sacraments that we receive saving grace. Returning to Mass and receiving Holy Communion can now be appreciated much more. We can savour the precious gift that it is.
