20.01.2022 Several cases before the courts emanating from treatment in the Hunter region have drawn attention to the quality of care in our mental health facilities. This poses the question; are the high rates of suicide in patients who have been admitted to a psychiatric facility directly linked to their experience within the facility itself? 19.01.2022 The Aged Care Royal Commission heard the shocking claim this week that almost 50 sexual assaults take place in our residential aged facilities each week. 15.01.2022 We recently acted for a client who terminated a home care provider's service - engaged to assist his elderly mother - due to performance dissatisfaction. As a result, the home care provider made an application to NCAT seeking appointment as his mother's formal guardian. Had the correct care and investigation of symptoms been performed by the medical professionals, this situation could have been avoided. 07.01.2022 Nationally, health outcomes for Indigenous Australians are still well behind the rest of the population. One of the reasons Aboriginal peoples discharge themselves from hospital early against medical advice is because of not feeling comfortable or culturally safe. One health district has devised a new program to improve this, where Indigenous students are being trained in various roles to increase Indigenous representation in health services.

05.01.2022 An inquiry is underway into the death of a 66-year old woman who died while receiving treatment via telehealth at her local rural hospitals’ emergency department. The hospital had been relying solely on telehealth services since June when a local GP’s contract was not renewed. Following community outrage over the death, a physical doctor presence is set to resume with health officials agreeing to rehire the doctor. Certain situations cannot be adequately treated via telehealth, and it’s unacceptable that it took a tragic event to highlight the need for a physical doctor.
