25.01.2022 AROUND THE CLASSROOMS Year 8 Technology Mandatory students with Ms Hartman were making French toast in class last week. Of course the big advantage was that they were then able to eat their creations! Delicious!

25.01.2022 The Year 12 Music students performed their HSC Music performance recently. Unfortunately parents were not able to be in attendance. Here are some highlights from these performances.

24.01.2022 Senior Constable Dusan Dakic, Police Liaison Officer for Catherine McAuley, spoke to Year 7 students last week about being Cyber Wise, as part of the Year 7 Peer Support Program. He discussed areas such as social media, online gaming, protecting yourself online, protecting others online and the reporting of online abuse or inappropriate content. The students had the opportunity to ask Senior Constable Dakic questions and gain further insight and strategies to help them be safe online.



24.01.2022 Congratulations to Year 12 student Tram N. who has been awarded the Bishop of Parramatta Award for Student Excellence 2020. This annual award is given to one Year 12 student from each Catholic school in the Diocese of Parramatta. It recognises students who witness their Catholic faith and achieve well in their academic, sporting, creative, vocational or community endeavours. Tram was nominated for this award by the School Principal and with the planned award ceremony at St Patricks Cathedral not able to go ahead it was Ms Refalo who presented Tram with her award yesterday at school. Congratulations Tram! The school is very proud of you.

22.01.2022 Well done to the Senior Debating Team who made it through to the CSDA Debating Competition quarter finals held last Friday. The team was defeated by St Leos Catholic College but competed strongly. The debating competition has now finished. All teams did McAuley proud this year and the school congratulates you on your efforts!



22.01.2022 NINE DAYS OF GRADUATION Day 2 of The Nine Days of Graduation was yesterday which saw the school hang a Congratulations and Good Luck Year 12 banner outside the school gates on Darcy Road.

20.01.2022 MERCY DAY 2020 LITURGY OF THE WORD - Mercy Day is a special day at Catherine McAuley Westmead as the annual event where the school can celebrate our foundation as a school based on Mercy values - social justice, hospitality, courage, integrity and excellence. The celebrations for 2020 were adjusted to accommodate current restrictions but the day was still one filled with community building and was a great day for all students to enjoy. The day began with the Mercy Day lit...urgical celebration and commissioning of school leaders for 2020 - 2021. Fr Walter led the Liturgy of the Word which was attended in person by the leaders being commissioned and the school leadership team. The whole school community were able to participate with each Homeroom making their classroom a prayer space where they could watch the Liturgy of the Word as it was live streamed to them. See more

18.01.2022 Throwback Thursday What a difference a year can make... This photo shows Mercy Day 2019 with the whole school gathered together for Mercy Day Mass. The school will hold a liturgy tomorrow which will be live streamed to Homerooms.

To acknowledge the day students and staff were able to see connection cards scattered around the school designed to start the conversation. Ask a friend! Ask a peer! Ask a teacher! Ask a colleague!... R U OK? A conversation could change a life!

16.01.2022 The two Year 9 International Studies classes visited Bankstown today to tour the area and hear about its history and multiculturalism. This excursion took place as part of their Culture and Food Unit. The students had the opportunity to taste Vietnamese, Lebanese and Greek foods with most students able to try at least one new food which they have not tried before.

15.01.2022 The usual Mercy Day Mass was adapted this year to fit with current restrictions. The Mass was changed to a Liturgy and each Homeroom created a prayer space so that students could come together in their Homerooms to still fully participate. Students watched the Liturgy of the Word as it was live streamed to them.

13.01.2022 Thank you to the Parents and Friends Association who generously provided students with their lunch for Mercy Day yesterday. Students were able to enjoy either a hamburger, chicken burger or vegetarian burger. In addition, drinks could be purchased for $2 with all funds going to Mercy Works.

13.01.2022 SCHOOL CAPTAINS HANDOVER Holli and Josette, the Catherine McAuley School Captains for 2020, handed over their badge of leadership this morning during the Mercy Day Liturgy of the Word. The new School Captains for 2021, Akansha and Aimee, accepted their badges and are our new School Captains!!

13.01.2022 McAuley students were out walking today at lunchtime as they joined with their friends in the McAuley Wellbeing Walk. Given today was National Health and Physical Education Day, a day to highlight the importance of Health and Physical Education, the PDHPE Department organised the walk. Research shows that childrens participation in physical activity leads to better student engagement, improved academic achievement, and better health outcomes in adult life. Students walked with their friends around the hockey fields and through the Sr Barbara McDonough Building. Well done to all staff and students who participated!

12.01.2022 Throwback Thursday 1968 4th Form students on break up day. Students are standing on the incinerator (who remembers those!) Our own equivalent of 4th Form (Year 12) will have their final day at school on Thursday 24th September.

11.01.2022 Monday Memories The 1970 school birthday celebrations saw students dancing in Coolock Court (then known as the top quad). The school marked its 54th birthday this month on the 6th November. In the early days this birthday was celebrated with dancing and a cake.

11.01.2022 The MAG (Mercy In Action Group) Leaders from Years 10 and 11 meet on Wednesday this week to discuss current social justice issues and forward planning to develop Mercy strategies to respond to the challenges of our time, with a focus on a strong student voice.

10.01.2022 AROUND THE CLASSROOMS Year 12 English Studies students have had the opportunity to attend three career workshops with Ms Chahine, Careers Advisor, over the past few weeks. The workshops have covered the positive outcomes from studying vocational education and looked at the practical information and documents that are needed to apply. Students had a Zoom session with TAFE and Australian Careers Business College looking at course options and what employers are looking for. The final session held on Wednesday this week was helping the students prepare for a job interview, both via video and in person, and was assisting the students in how to respond to interview questions.

08.01.2022 Clare and Dobson Houses ran a popcorn and fairy floss stall today at lunchtime to raise money for Mercy Works and the Katilosa Community Centre for the Disabled in Timor-Leste. They sold out in only eight minutes! A record for their fundraising efforts so far!
