25.01.2022 A really important Q from one of our lovely ladies in our community here this morning was how do you support women that are POST menopausal....... If the care i...s not taken in the peri-menopausal period you will not be able to ease off the cliff of oestrogen in your ultra light, you WILL THUD onto the ground 5000 ft below with weight gain, burn out, brain fog, hot flushes and rage.......... As post menopause lands - we have other issues to support and nourish for the long term to provide health and mobility well into our 80's and beyond. One of THE most important issues post menopause is to KEEP your bone density. Osteoporosis is a major problem for women of this age group and it can be prevented at best and halted otherwise with focused strategies post-menopause. Oestrogen deficit is to blame, and this also impacts other tissues like in the cardio-vascular system and genitourinary system. So we can work toward preventing heart attacks, strokes, and chronic bladder infection and prolapse, the things that plague post -menopausal women. Plant Oestrogens are really a great fit here, and lock into the oestrogen cell receptors in our body and boost overall oestrogen effects. We find these in legumes like Soy (whole), Red Clover, Fenugreek and Alfalfa. If you have been in menopause for 5 years or more and have never had a bone mineral density test, I suggest you do this soon. Get a baseline in today. If you have low mineral density you will need to do something about it VERY soon - I can help. Moderate bone density still requires focus and tweaking of your day to day nutrition and exercise habits. High (normal) bone density means whatever you're doing is great, keep doing it - but re-test in 5 years. Also talk to your GP and follow up on their medical advice and guidance. Hope that's resonating with you today and someone benefits, Love, Cath x

10.01.2022 MENOPAUSE AND WEIGHT GAIN WHERE TO DRAW THE LINE? Is this focus on weight gain in Menopause an arm of the belligerent cultural pressure on Women to be thin forever?... Or is menopausal weight gain a serious health concern? Which is it? Women typically gain a minimum of 10kgs during the peri-menopausal (prior to periods stopping) and the menopausal stage (12 months or more of no bleeds). If the perimenopause period starts somewhere between 10-12 years BEFORE our periods actually STOP, then we need to be addressing weight gain in our early 40's. This helps us prevent more serious health issues in our 50's like diabetes, insulin resistance, cardiac disease, bone density loss, thyroid disease and some breast cancers which are ALL IMPACTED by the insulin issues of weight gain. Insulin Resistance = Inflammation Serious stuff! The dress rehearsal is well and truly over ladies 6 POINTERS WHAT YOU EAT Keep food non-processed and LOW CARB. The science on this is water tight. Low carb, moderate protein, and higher amounts of healthy fats will keep you feeling fuller for longer and give you blood sugar control. Empty the pantry, Fill the fridge HOW MUCH YOU EAT Keep your portion sizes smaller than your portion sizes prior to turning 40. Using a smaller plate helps. Your body metabolises food differently, so meet your body where it is at. Learn to feel the signs of fullness, and don't eat more. WHEN YOU EAT We do not have to eat all the time. When you have control over your blood glucose levels, cravings for sugary / fatty carbs disappears. Regular fasting periods give glucose control MOVE YOUR BODY.............. EVERY.SINGLE.DAY Physical activity blesses every part of our body and being, and you get to pick your passion! Yoga, HITT, running, river walks, Body Pump, Barre, Pilates, cycling.....we have a feast of options. Find a walking buddy and start moving BEHAVIOURAL STUFF Behaviours around food and exercise can be our biggest roadblock to weight loss success Reach out and find support REGULATE AND BALANCE YOUR HORMONES Stress hormones, androgens, thyroid hormones and female reproductive hormones play a role in weight gain through the delicate interplay with insulin. If you're pouring love in and STILL THE WEIGHT WILL NOT BUDGE, it's probably time to get some expert help. BOOK to see your friendly GP for some blood work and BOOK to see your friendly Herbalist to mop it all up!
