24.01.2022 Donate today: http://catholicmission.org.au/Uganda In July last year, as Evas went into labour, her only option to reach the nearest health facility was to travel on the back of a motorbike. Living on the outskirts of the small rural town of Bujuni, three hours west of Ugandas capital city, Kampala, Evas did not have access to an ambulance, or a car for that matter. For two full hours, Evas sat on the back of the motorbike, tightly holding on to the driver as the bike hit co...untless bumps. The driver struggled desperately to regain control of the motorbike several times as it slid on the muddy road. Evas was not just holding on for her own life, but that of her unborn child. Distressingly, as day turned to night, Evas fear and uncertainty descended into unthinkable grief and her dream of finally becoming a mother soon became her worst nightmare. Tragically, the journey was too much, Evas held her baby boy all too briefly, and after two days in hospital, Evas baby boy died. Such needless loss and grief could have been prevented if Evas had been travelling in an ambulance rather than on a motorbike. Fortunately, there are inspirational people who dedicate their life to others through their life-giving work. One example is Sister Mary Goretti, from the local Ugandan order, the Daughters of Mary. For the past two years, she has been running St Luke Bujuni Health Centre, which was Evas destination on the night of her labour. As the most affordable health centre with a maternity ward in the region, St Lukes has seen an influx of expectant mothers coming to receive care and to give birth, among them many who are at high risk. Distressingly, St Lukes is vastly under-resourced, without even an ambulance. Pope Francis says affordable healthcare is a universal right, not a privilege. It is our shared responsibility to help Sister Mary and her small staff put the words of the Holy Father into action by providing affordable healthcare to more women and children in need to reduce this needless loss and grief. Reach out today by supporting women and childrens health by helping missionaries like Sister Mary reach out and give life in Uganda and all around the world. 21.01.2022 Seminarians often undertake agriculture work as part of their formation, tending to crops and livestock to support the seminary financially, as well as providin...g food for the staff and students. In addition, the skills that they learn can be later used as part of their ministry as priests in areas with subsistence farming. Your gift of $36 today can prepare a seminarian for ministry in rural areas. Follow the link to purchase: https://bit.ly/2ItiynZ
20.01.2022 Australians love their sport, and so do Cambodians. The unifying nature of sport makes it a rare "vehicle of fraternity", says Pope Francis, which builds a culture of encounter toward a world of peace.
18.01.2022 Christmas should be a time filled with excitement and joy, when family and friends come together. In the Philippines, a country of nearly 80 million Catholics, everyone comes together to share with one another the joy of one of their biggest celebrations of the year. Suffering from deformity in her limbs, as well as brittle bone syndrome, sadly, it's not this way for Angela and her family. Her only Christmas wish is to be able to do the simple things that her friends can do. ...Thankfully, there is a saving grace for this struggling family. The Canossian Daughters of Charity opened the Canossian Health and Social Centre in Tondo, where Angela, and children like her are able to receive life-saving treatment and medications. The centre includes a general practice, dental clinic, pharmacy and a day care centre, which Daniel attends. It is also one of the few dedicated tuberculosis treatment centres in the region. 16.01.2022 Zaccarias Exposito was seven years old when a historic referendum freed his homeland of Timor-Leste from the brutal occupation by Indonesia. He will never forget the violence that erupted around him as Indonesian forces left the country, burning everything in their path. As he stayed with his father in their village while others fled, Zaccarias vowed he would always remain with his people. Now 24 years old, Zaccarias is a promising young seminarian at St Peter and St Paul Maj...or Seminary in Dili. Although he has seen great progress in his young nation, endemic domestic violence, poverty and unemployment still plague the society, greatly troubling the people he loves and cares for. Zaccarias hopes to become a priest so that he can bring the light of the Holy Spirit to his people, and show them a better life through Gods loving mercy. You can help Zaccarias and others like him today by supporting Catholic Missions 2016 Seminarian Appeal. Please help to raise vital funds for the training of seminarians and novices who will become the leaders of the Church in developing countries around the world. 08.01.2022 In the poorest and most disadvantaged communities of Cambodia, and other developing countries all across the world, children are always the most vulnerable. Many cannot attend school because they have to care for their younger siblings while their parents work long hours to earn barely enough to survive. Some children are even forced to work themselves to help support the family. Illiterate and with no formal education, these precious children have very little opportunity to ...ever break the vicious cycle of poverty that has entrapped their families for generations. Thanks to the support of Catholic Mission, Sister Eulie Desacula from the Daughters of Charity has initiated the innovative Mobile Tuk-Tuk Education Centre which proactively goes out to the children from disadvantaged communities and gives them an education they would otherwise never achieve. Sadly, there are still countless children who are not receiving an education, and Sister Eulie urgently wants to increase the number of communities they visit and do it more frequently, so she can reach as many children as possible. With your help, we can give life and a new future to the children in Cambodia and all around the world.
08.01.2022 The 2016 theme for this years Catholic Mission World Mission Appeal is inspired by the Prayer of Saint Francis of Assisi, Lord, make me an instrument of your peace. This appeal invites parishioners to reach out through their financial gifts and prayers to support the work of Mercy Works that, thanks to its partnership with Catholic Mission, is raising awareness of the issue of domestic violence in Papua New Guinea.
