17.01.2022 "Conference books can often be dry technical volumes, but this one is different. This one is about people. People whose stories make mission a reality. Those needing homes, people coping with bushfires, families needing childcare. And it’s also about those in the sector who respond to the need." 17.01.2022 Yesterday the 'Holding The Light' ecumenical service was held remembering victims/survivors of domestic violence. Thanks to ACRATH and Victorian Council of Churches, for assisting to organise this important service - and to St Peter's Eastern Hill for hosting. An important moment to take, to reflect and consider our own relationship to prevention and response to domestic violence and abuse in our own contexts and communities, either directly or as a part of a broader culture ...and society. CSSV works to be a part of a whole-of-Church response to ending domestic violence. 15.01.2022 "Regardless of the length of this recent Victorian lockdown, it cements the ongoing role of COVID-19 in shaping 2021 and the important place of Catholic social services’ work in responding to the needs of our time. Especially with the slowing of Federal Government support across JobSeeker and JobKeeper, and current economic circumstances, many needs continue to be created or compounded by the pandemic." 13.01.2022 If the rate of JobSeeker returns to an unlivable $40 per day in coming weeks, people will be plunged into poverty that could lead to entrenched disadvantage within families. CEO of Catholic Social Services Australia Dr Ursula Stephens explains that the inadequacy of the JobSeeker payment, which has been increased due to COVID-19 but is set to return to pre-pandemic levels, is well understood. Reducing JobSeeker payments and other support systems would severely stunt any re...covery. 12.01.2022 "The truth is, slavery touches the lives of most of us in this room every day through the supply chains of the goods and services we purchase. Do you own a telephone or a computer, clothing, shoes? Do you drink coffee or tea? Do you wear jewellery or makeup? Do you buy seafood, pet food, meat, fruit, vegetables or eat fast food?" 11.01.2022 ** An important update from Brigidine Asylum Seekers Project (BASP) ** The beginning of 2021 has been particularly challenging; 68 men were released (without warning) from detention in Melbourne with 3-6 weeks support and then no income, no housing and usually no employment. BASP has been very involved with this group because there are very limited avenues for these men to access assistance. BASP has housed eight men to date and is trying to access more accommodation and em...ployment for the remaining men. As well, the government is continuing to cut the small payment they used to make to most families and individuals (SRSS) who are waiting for the processing of their applications for protection and have no other income. These payments are still gradually being cut off so many people are facing destitution. There is another group of families and individuals (maybe 100 people in Victoria) who are to be exited from any government support in the near future. They are in a program called community detention and will need considerable help. If you're able to help in any way, please contact BASP: Email: Sr Brigid Arthur - [email protected] Phone: (03) 9696 2107 https://www.basp.org.au/ Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne Catholic Diocese of Sale Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst Asylum Seeker Resource Centre (ASRC) Australian Refugee Action Network - ARAN Catholic Alliance for People Seeking Asylum - CAPSA CatholicCare - Greater Melbourne, Geelong, Gippsland Catholic Religious Australia Australian Catholic Bishops Conference Kildare Ministries Kilbreda College Richard Wynne MP Martin Foley MP

05.01.2022 Today, November 20, is World Children’s Day. It is a timely reminder of the vulnerabilities of children and the need to ensure primary school aged children are in the playground not in prison. Jesuit Social Services' #WorthASecondChance campaign has just released a new animated short film about why Australian states and territories must raise the age of legal responsibility from 10 to 14. 600 children aged 10-13 are arrested, charged and locked up in Australian prisons ever...y year, despite there being a wealth of evidence from Australia and abroad showing that children under 14 years do not possess the neurological maturity to form criminal intent. We are asking supporters to send a letter to their local MPs asking them to raise the age. There is a pre-written letter here which allows you to easily email your lower and upper house MPs: https://worthasecondchance.com.au/raisetheage-1 Read more: bit.ly/35JU9rC #RaiseTheAge #WorthASecondChance Catholic Social Services Australia Catholic Diocese of Sale Catholic Diocese of Sandhurst Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne https://youtu.be/eRvFl7mg7nA
