19.01.2022 Today is International Day of People with Disability. For me the movie musical The Greatest Showman is such a celebration of diversity. If you havent seen it, make yourself a promise to see it. And the song This is Me, Keala Settle, from the movie is just inspirational! Take 4 minutes out of your day, listen and think about those words and what they mean to you. I am always pumped after I hear this song. ... I hope your day is going fabulously! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IfGmj_NZ85M #CathyJeffries

16.01.2022 Have you heard of ISAAC? ISAAC stands for International Society for AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication). ISAAC works to improve the lives of children and adults who use AAC. ... Attending ISAACs conference in 2018 was most valuable to my speech pathology practice. This morning I will be on-line attending a webinar hosted by ISAAC. My story of How Getting a Speech Device Changed My Life is to be presented by Todd Hutchinson, an expert AAC user who guest lectures regularly at universities and has helped researchers better the field of AAC. Have a wonderful day everyone! https://www.isaac-online.org//international-aac-awareness/ #cathyjeffries

15.01.2022 Kirsty is very social and loves using her voice. She especially loves to sing and attend music therapy Sometimes it is challenging for others to understand Kirsty's speech so she is learning to use a PODD book (a low tech communication device) and also has an iPad with Snap Core First (a high tech device). Kirsty now has lots of options for communication. Alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) is often a blend of different methods of communicating, depending upon t...he situation. Kirsty receives on-going services for speech and using alternative communication devices. Here is Kirsty having a conversation with a support worker using PODD and voice. I am so proud of Kirsty. #cathyjeffries

02.01.2022 I have such a great story to share. Lee has been able to send me messages today via Messenger with the communication app called Snap Core First. Lee’s disability means he cannot phone me or send a text message like other people without disabilities. I have needed to always communicate with Lee from a distance via someone else. Not anymore!... Thankyou NDIS for funding Lee for the necessary supports so Lee can achieve increased independence. Another big thankyou goes to Mark Harford who has been instrumental in supporting Lee. Thanks Mark and well done Lee. #CathyJeffries
02.01.2022 Hi everyone. Rain please! NDIS funding categories - Core, Capital and Capacity Building. These can be confusing at times. Think of a task a participant needs assistance to do due to the disability.... Core - could provide a support worker to help with the task Capital - could provide modifications or specialised equipment for the task Capacity Building - could provide a person or program to teach skills and ways to improve participant ability to do the task Endeavour Foundation have some excellent information to support your understanding of NDIS funding. Have a great day! https://www.endeavour.com.au//ndis-funding-categories-expl #CathyJeffries
02.01.2022 Did you know ......? When we introduce a communication device to a person with complex communication needs (CCN), one of the best intervention strategies is Communication Partner Modelling. No catwalk required! Communication Partner Modelling involves carers, support workers and others close to the participant using the device to make meaning during everyday interactions. This applies to low-tech or high-tech systems.... So...... Ask for help to learn Have a go Remember, making mistakes and trying again is a powerful message for clients with CCN. Just say "oops!" Have fun! Here is a video of Modelling AAC Using PODD Have a great day everyone! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qFLtWIDTyQ8 #CathyJeffries
