20.01.2022 At our last Landcare group, The Fred Caterson Landcare Group partook in the Hollows as Homes citizen science project where we collected data on the hollows we found at the Fred Caterson Reserve. One of our attendees took some amazing shots of these hollows, including one with a Kookaburra inside as well as the endangered Powerful Owl! Hollows are getting harder to find in urban bushland due to urban development as we knock down large trees that contain hollows. Trees can ta...ke over 100 years to grow a hollow, but it takes only a second for them to be knocked down. Protecting the bushland we have left here is imperative for wildlife especially with the growing competition of exotic species and growing populations of native birds in urban areas such as cockatoos, which is resulted from the effects of climate change. For more information on the Hollows as Homes citizen science project check out this link: https://www.rbgsyd.nsw.gov.au/hollows-as-h/hollows-as-homes #hollowsashomes #hollows #wildlife #landcarensw #landcare #bushcare #community #citizenscience #bushland #saveourspecies #nature

19.01.2022 Did you know there is a Eucalyptus species called Eucalyptus sp. Cattai that is only found in Cattai? It is unfortunately Endangered, threatened by urban development, fire trails, and farms. A bit about this beauty: ... She is a small tree, ranging to 4.5 meters high. Her bark is thick, sub-fibrous, furrowed but loose on the lower trunk. She occurs as a rare emergent tree in scrub, heath, and low woodland on sandy soils, usually as isolated individuals or in small clusters over a limited area. Has anyone seen this beauty in their travels? CHEN is looking into getting one of these planted at the Annangrove Environment Centre! It would be great to use for education purposes, so more people can help this species survive. #cattai #hillscommunity #landcarensw #eucalyptus #eucalyptustree #eucalyptusleaves

19.01.2022 The Hills Shire Council is currently running an Expression of Interest to find an apartment block to take part in a FREE Worm Farming Program! One building will be selected to participate in a three-month worm farming trial in early 2021 to help them reduce the food waste they send to landfill. Participating apartments will receive a small gift at the end of the trial to allow them to continue food recycling and, most importantly, they will be making a positive environmental ...difference at a grassroots level! See attached expression of interest for further information on the trial. If accepted by or interest is shown from the executive committee/body corporate of an apartment building, strata/building managers can nominate their building/s by filling out the very short submission form on this page. Please note that the expression of interest period ends on Friday 6 November 2020. 15.01.2022 CHEN, with the help from the Hawkesbury Landcare Network, attended Oakville Preschool last Friday to present to the children, an interactive activity called the ‘Story of Cattai’ which demonstrated the impacts of harmful chemicals, pesticides, and construction debris, among others, on our waterways, in particular, our local Cattai catchment. They learned a lot and were very engaged in finding out ways they could make changes in their day-to-day lives to help the creek and ...the animals that rely on its survival. This was all so evident in their eagerness to answer questions and participate in the activity . We loved every minute of it! We even saw a couple of the kids go into the sandpit afterward and create their own Cattai creek in which they pretended to protect it from construction. Children really are sponges! It just shows just how important it is to teach them about protecting the environment when they are young as they will be the leaders of the future! #cattai #sustainableschools #environmetnaleducation #wildlife #waterway #waterhealth #watereducation #nativewildlife

12.01.2022 On Saturday, I went to the ‘Rapid Appraisal of Riparian Conditions’ workshop organized by NSW Local Land Services to learn about Riparian zones and how to protect them. What is a riparian zone? It’s simply where the land and water ecosystems meet. They are vital sites in a catchment supporting high levels of biodiversity. This area is where trees root, holding up the banks and providing shade, assist in nutrient cycling, reduce erosion and provide habitat for wildlife ... We learned a lot today not only from our presenter but also from those that attended, as there were a lot of people from different backgrounds sharing their knowledge on riparian zones and overall water health. It’s great to see people coming together on their weekend to learn about how we can do more as individuals, in our work, and as community groups to protect our natural environment and wildlife! #landcarensw #locallandservices #cattaicreek #riparianzones #waterhealth #environmentaleducation #sustainability #cliamtechange #scientists #femalescientists #community

09.01.2022 As part of the October Get Your Hands Dirty! event, Greater Sydney Landcare Network and National Parks provided an amazing opportunity for young people to get together at Cattai National Park for an Eco-Campout! We enjoyed camping outdoors under the stars, doing some bushcare, and enjoyed and learned a lot during a night spotting and bird spotting tour by local experts! It was great to see young people being engaged in their natural environment, learning more, and doing thei...r part to make a difference. Thank you GSLN for this amazing experience! #cattai #bushcare #landcarensw #conservation #engagement #sustainableliving #cattaicreek #platypus #landcarensw #camping

03.01.2022 CHEN people - watch this and understand what is about to be passed in parliament - that we need to put a stop too - as otherwise our Koalas are going to have even less protection!
