25.01.2022 She is such a gentle soul, this mildmannered orangutan from the jungles around Camp Leakey in Central Kalimantan, Borneo. Despite a desperately sad background, she remains quiet, shy, and so unassuming. Her quiet pose had me captivated, giving me plenty of opportunity to study that soft smiling portrait and to think deeply about the tough situation orangutans find themselves in as their habitat decreases at a rate of knots. 24.01.2022 Early every morning at Volunteer Point in the Falkland Islands Id brave the cold conditions to walk the beach, and every morning this group of king penguins would gather hysterically in the shallows and waddle behind me up and down the sand. 21.01.2022 Two images tiday - just check out that eye! This bush stone-curlew was happily snoozing in the late sun on Moreton Island, Queensland (1st image), seemingly out for the count. Suddenly, without moving another muscle, the bottom eyelid dropped down like an upside-down garage door to reveal that huge unforgettable yellow eye 2nd image), an eye that kept a most careful eye on me while I checked him out at the same time. The only member of the albatross family to live in the tropics, the waved albatross is critically endangered. 20.01.2022 I dont know quite what I expected the underside of a king penguins feet to look like but I dont think it was like this. It was a hot (well, relatively!) day at Volunteer Point in the Falklands and this penguin was stretched out on the grass, belly downwards, with the soles of its feet exposed to help it cool off a bit. Gave me a great opportunity to look closely at the leathery cushioned soles and the brushlike tail which is so effective in sweeping the ground behind the i...ndividual as it moves. 17.01.2022 I never saw anything more miserable than this king penguin in the Falklands. The poor thing had been carefully minding the egg for days, egg sitting all safe under the adults stomach "pouch" to keep it warm and at a consistent temperature. But late this day the adult penguin got a bit too fidgety, moved its feet around too much, and the egg rolled onto the ground. Apparently penguins have no idea as to how to retrieve a fallen egg and all the adult could do was look in help...lessly as the egg sat out in the open, slowly going bad and inevitably killing the life within. The mourning was obvious in the adults stance and demeanour -so very sad. 13.01.2022 No, this isnt a weird kind of music script.... its a view from the street of the balconies in a Yokahama apartment building in Japan. The main chinstrap penguin rookery on Half Moon Island in the South Shetlands is way up high and it's such hard work for a tired penguin to ply its way up through ice and snow to reach home. You just have to see how much ice is kicked up with each move forward.
