25.01.2022 The 2020 Junior Future Star Chess Tournament was held in UWA Ezone on the 15th of November. A whopping 85 promising young chess players turned up in what was one of the biggest WA junior events in recent years. Given the impact of COVID-19, it was extremely pleasing to see many fresh new faces coming and attempting in their ever tournament. As our very first tournament, things didn't quite go according to planned (it never does!). An unexpected road closure struck, causing ...a few children to arrive late. As a direct result, the tournament started 30 minutes behind our initial schedule. However, once we got the tournament rolling it was a great success. The day saw many nail-biting games with close competition across all three divisions (Advanced, Intermediate and Beginner). Given the recent popularity surrounding the Netflix series 'Queen's Gambit', it is an encouraging sign to see quite a few girls participating, as well as two girls managing to topple their respective divisions. Congratulations to all the prize winners (and for everyone involved)! Advanced: Celine Ong (6.5/7) Eu Jin Khaw (6/7) Jayden Arav (4.5/7) Merit Award: Angus Chen (4), Ethan Nguyen (4) Intermediate: Daryoush Rafiei Darani (7/7) Jerry Wu (6/7) Callan Arav (5.5/7) Merit Award: Jayden Song (5.5), Jaswanth Ram Sethuraman (5), Nithuli Liyanage (5), Eu Ming Khaw (5), Nathan Arav (5), Christopher Loh (5), Ezra Levine (4.5), Marcus Van Der Berg (4.5) Beginner: Jasmine Wu (6.5/7) Terry Wu (5/7) Harrison Palmer (5/7) Merit Award: Oscar Storey (5), Avan Chung (4.5), Nicholas Cooper (4.5), Asher Nissen (4.5), Mwansa Chansongo (4.5) Special mention to our enthusiastic organiser Shirley Sun, who acted as the event photographer and took over 250 photos. Many memorable moments of joy and laughter was captured and we hope to see many kids returning for our future events! The report is provided by Patrick Gong

However, the tournament remained a very closely fought affair, with var...ious Intermediate players managed to defeat their advanced counterparts. The day passed with no major incidents (Shout out to our amazing arbiters Josh, Danush, Alan, Paul and Georgina). It was a not-for-profit event organised by CAWA with tremendous help from WA's active chess community. Over 40 junior chess players of different levels enjoyed learning from various chess coaches, participating in puzzle competitions and playing against each other. It was great to see many new faces who got interested in chess just recently and wanted to improve their game! We were very h...appy to see both Australian Chess Champion GM Temur Kuybokarov and WA State Chess Champion FM Patrick Gong participating in the chess camp. Three of the strongest chess players in WA FM Patrick Gong, Ihsan Ferozkohi and Andrew Hardegen found time in their busy schedules to coach WA's top juniors and gave an inspirational talk about FIDE and ACF ratings. We were very fortunate to have GM Temur Kuybokarov over for a simultaneous exhibition. He played on 36 boards against enthusiastic young chess players. The simul went for almost four hours and Temur won 35 out of 36 games. The only player who managed to win against the grandmaster was Jamie Laubbacher. Congratulations to Jamie for such a great result!
