23.01.2022 Where you sweat from and when matters. Your pits, your head, your chest, your palms, soles of your feet, chest, your brow, at night, in the afternoon, you wake up that way, never, only after exercise, totally at random or when you're nervous. All clues that contribute to a final pattern differentiation.... There is nothing wrong with sweat. It's chill when it's doing it's job as long as it stays in its lane. @ladyist #sweat #stayinyourlane #symptom

23.01.2022 When natural health professionals are singing about taking care of your immune system, it's to fill a gap in the rhetoric that is being shared by government and media. It's not necessarily them suggesting that Vit D supplementation will save you from Voldemort AKA C-19 (I'm sick to death of that term y'all). Certain activities (mask wearing) and restrictions are being mandated, because that is a way that the government can protect their citizens. They cannot mandate meditatio...n. They cannot mandate eating whole foods and supplementing what needs supplementing. They cannot mandate regular exercise, acupuncture or herbal medicine. YES! They could point us in the direction of where we can find this information, but they are not. A mistake, yes, but maybe our government is just as frightened as us. Look, I clearly don't know and am speculating. I'm also a hopeless optimist who likes to put a positive spin on things. It's my super power. But let's take responsibility for ourselves and our community/family. My job is to take care of people's health and so I will do my best to share quality information as loudly as I can. I can offer thoughts and professional advice on your health and certain ways to navigate this current Voldemort time. While I'm highly suspicious of the influence of certain people and powerful organisations at the best of times, I'm uncertain at this juncture. What I do feel certain of, is that espousing that other people should "wake up" to your ideology is never cool and it's a sure bet that I will switch off upon reading it. Don't insult me when trying to convince me. I am awake. Everyone's bloody awake. And they're doing the best that they can. PS yes, that is Paulette and no she has no tail #voldemort #wakeup #benice #skepticismissexy

22.01.2022 Mumma Rose wants you to know where you are in your cycle! Fans know she's telling Stevie this so she won't get pregnant, but it's equally relevant advice if you're trying for a bébé OR just living your life. The cutest thing that I notice in clinic is that when I ask people where they are in their cycle, they OFTEN put on their thinking face, make a guess, then grab their phone to check their app.... which is halfway cool.... but probably not cool if you're in the mood, ya kn...ow? I mean, it's fine, but I think it's yet another way in which we're giving our will to tech. I'm trying to get off Google maps more frequently these days, because I KNOW WHERE I'M GOING I'VE LIVED HERE FOREVER. I put it on for the best route, but I KNOW the routes I like and I'm finding that my brain is a seive for streets sometimes due to maps. You're cycle is the same! If you're fully relying on tech, you're not embodying it! And the whole point of cycle tracking is to have an idea of why you're feeling a certain way at a certain time and to structure your life accordingly. If you need to check your phone, you're losing your flow darl. I certainly don't insist upon knowing it exactly off the top of your head - I barely know what day of the week it is atm. But I know I'm about 4 days after ovulation. That's chill for my purposes. If you are trying to conceive or avoiding, you'll need to be more accurate. May I just thank Schitt's Creek for getting me through stage 4? Can I do that here? Thank you #schittscreek #bbt #cycletracking

19.01.2022 Focus My grand plans to write cohesively and at length about preventative medicine and what that actually looks like have been put to the side for the moment. I'm consciously using my laser-focus on my current tele-health patients, continued study, work meetings and the ongoing admin of a small business.... It will come, but my attention is better used elsewhere. I encourage you to file your life and work similarly - what can wait and what can't. My days are spent supporting old and new patients over zoom or the phone (depending on screen weariness), reading, writing prescriptions, emailsemailsemails, writing content. I begin my day with so much journaling and self care work that fills my cup so successfully I am constantly astounded - but it takes time and work. I recently began a small case study group among peers and we had our first meet this morning. It's everything I could ever hope for in terms of professional support and motivation. And our first book club meet for Women Who Run with Wolves is scheduled for next week!! I decided to chunk the book and we are reading over 3 months. Our first section is just 126 pages. Gently gently my friends. Easy does it. . #gently #easydoesit #easylikesundaymorning

19.01.2022 "If you're feeling low, sad, worried or things just seem too much, Lifeline is there to support you." This entire post is taken from their website to assure anyone who needs it, that they are there for you. Crisis looks different on everyone and often we underplay the help we need. "How we are feeling in our mind & body will vary from day to day. Signs to look out for:... Withdrawing from others & usual activities Feeling overwhelmed & finding it hard to cope with everyday things & tasks Using alcohol or drugs to cope with feelings Feeling tearful, wanting to cry all the time Feeling irritable, restless or agitated Lacking energy or feeling tired all the time Feeling angry or short tempered Experiencing 'brain fog', finding it hard to think clearly, loss of concentration Changes to your sleeping or eating patterns Feeling that no one seems to understand you Feeling lonely Having suicidal thoughts Whatever the case is for you - if you're feeling low, sad, worried or things just seem too much, we're here to support you. Whatever it may be, sharing the hurt & pain with someone else can help. We are always here for you, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Struggling to cope with everyday life doesn't look or feel the same for everyone. We can't generalise how this will feel for you or what type of support you might need. No matter who you are or what you're going through, we are here to listen & talk it through with you to help you get the support you need. If you're worried about someone else, we can help with that too." All is confidential my friends. They have a texting service & a chat service if you're feeling nervous. It's a big step, but a gentle one in a good direction. #lifeline #depression #anxiety #stress

19.01.2022 There's rather a trend of people referring to their "daily non-negoatiables". These are often wholesome practices that are said to add to the person's life. They're the practices that make them feel their best. Often they are meditation, a skin cleanser, exercise, a supplement etc etc you know the vibe I'm referring to. Y'allknow I'm big on semantics and this "non-negotiable" craze reads exactly like the "cheat day" of diet culture. It suggests punishment for not completing ...your practice and has a malicious and threatening tone to it. The sentiment is great - knowing the things that make you tick, but you don't need to use demeaning language in order to achieve those things! This is not to say that I disagree with short stints of rules that are in place to help you change your habits. They can be vital. And I'm definitely up for a daily practice. But daily practices ARE negotiable! Perhaps you feel unwell, or a friend has reached out and needs you, or you're busy with family or you just can't be effed and you're busy watching Shitt's Creek. Even if they ARE non-negotiable, like a medication or picking the kids up from school, it's unnecessary to use that language. You're an adult - there are plenty of non-negotiable things in your life. Non-negotiable is yucky language. Chuck it in the bin and choose a term that celebrates your choices and lifestyle, because you bloody deserve it. - Meditation is my daily go-to. - Daily meditation is my saviour. - This cleanser is my daily fave. See how this language suggests that you do it daily, but removes the pressure? Give it a go please. Be nice.

16.01.2022 When the cookbooks arrive Advice hot off the press from my friend who loves a cookbook and the "slow food" movement? Make 1-2 recipes each week and work through one book at a time. I jumped straight in and made the satay noodles from @jessica_prescott_ 's Vegan One Pot Wonders which was rich and delicious and true to the book's name was one pot and super easy. I just added more greens because yum.... The First Forty Days is all about replenishment in the first 40 days after a child is born. It puts the onus not on the mother/birther, but suggests the importance of community and family in support. Pregnancy and childbirth are a marathon and nourishment is important. This book looks at it from a Chinese medicine lens and is honestly bloody good for anyone who needs to support their yin & blood pregnancy or not And Ostro is important because yum. #recipesofinstagram #bookstagram #catsofinstagram

16.01.2022 All health modalities are good in my book. I love a buzz and a conversation and y'all really got me thinking yesterday, so I thank you for that. First things first, I just want to be clear that I am on board with all health modalities! I like to refer to physios and myos because holy hell they do a good job. Were so lucky to live in a society/community where there are so many diverse ways to take care of ourselves what works for one person won't always work for another etc ...etc. And honestly, physios and personal trainers have gotten me through dark times with my knees that dislocate at the drop of a hat. Literally forever grateful. And I'm also not for in-house sledging or quizzing people on their knowledge of social issues, because I think it causes unnecessary division. With assumptions alone, you will always get the picture wrong. In my practice, I don't use HEAPS of Chinese medicine language in consult because it can be confusing to a patient and we don't need that. I switch terms around to be more palatable. And I think that occurs in rebranding of techniques too, which i think is wonderful! Within the art world, we know that all is borrowed. Within academia, we reference, because literally everything needs to borrowed and built upon! The heart is there guys. The knowledge is there. Not one part of me wants to be divisive, ESPECIALLY among dedicated health professionals, because I I know the heart that goes into the work we do. We pour ourselves into it. And we change things because we want to share it as much as possible with an audience that might otherwise feel disempowered. And at the end of the day, I think it's about being exceptionally kind. So this is a post to celebrate the kindness, generosity and passion of your favourite health professional, no matter what modality. Send them an email to tell them how much you appreciate their help or tell them next time you see them. It'll mean the world to them @playboy #alliedhealth #sledging #cooperation

16.01.2022 Love to everyone, as always. No changes to the clinic schedules. I'll be right for there for y'all at work and right here. And we'll have the next episode of #bigheartaugust tomorrow If you haven't already, shoot off a selfie with a big fat cheesy grin to someone.... @bjennymontero #illbethereforyou #inthistogether #lovetho

16.01.2022 A friend in need - NB content includes an unwell bub. My little mate Eddy here will be two on October 22. Last week he was diagnosed with leukaemia and swiftly flown to Sydney Children's Hospital to begin treatment the following day. His treatment journey will be two years. The next 8 months these three superheroes will be in hospital for treatment, before they are able to return home for the balance of time. They don't know where home will be precisely, as their family are... currently packing theirs up for them. They are six days into a marathon of a lifetime, and as you might imagine are in need of financial support. Rather unwillingly, Candice agreed to me creating this fundraiser, because she's a divine angel and never wants to put anyone out. She's a breath of fresh air. She breathes ethereal light into any room she walks into. Link in bio to a @gofundme page that I created. I was on the phone to the three of them this morning as an astronaut walked past with crafternoon activities, followed shortly after by the morning's dose of morphine. I know that this is the year that we have all been digging deep, giving financially and emotionally. But I'm here asking for anything that you might be able to offer my darling friends in this dreadful dreadful time. You may have met Candice in one of her yoga classes at Gertrude St Yoga, Kozen Yoga, Yoga Lyfe, The Yoga Place, Vitality Yoga or Simpl-Lee Yoga or met Eddy sliding down a slide with a toothie grin. Lots of love to all, but today, especially to Eddy. I'm not usually this guy, but please leave a love heart below for the three of them to marvel at.

15.01.2022 Chilling the irritability and tears with herbs. What you see is an array of dates, rose buds, oyster shell, fungus, rhizomes, ginger, bit shells and lotus seeds to chill me out, calm my heart to ease anxiety and focus on my tummy bloating and less than ideal poos. I'm pretty hot for this formula tbh. I've shifted my diet a lot this week and have discovered that with minimal bread in my diet, I'm not as nice as you all think I am - hence the abundance of rose buds and oth...er qi regulators. I want to say a HUGE AND ENORMOUS thank you to everyone who has donated to my friends and their boy Eddy who is undergoing treatment for leukaemia. The link is still in my bio if you'd like to help them out but no presh. . @empiricalhealth #calmyourfarm #chillout #chillax #pottering #saturday #thisisiso #chinesemedicine #chineseherbs #anxiety #stress #mentalhealth #depression #endo #chronicfatigue #herbs #naturalhealth #acupuncture #menstrualhealth #womenshealth #naturalmedicine

13.01.2022 I am choosing 11am-12pm. It's before I leave the house for work so it's a time I would usually be checking it. Would this be a challenge for you or is one hour a snore? #thesocialdilemma #socialmediadetox #dopamine

13.01.2022 SWIPE to have your Sunday made My Sunday labour of love in between organising taxes, reading for book club tomorrow and doing a surprise juice cleanse. Why the cleanse? Because I don't think so highly of them and I want to understand physiologically what is going on. I'm in day 2/3 and so far.... I'm unconvinced.... What I will say for it, is that after a rather full on few weeks personally + the absolute joy of going back to work, my eating habits really suffered. My hope is on the other side of this it will be easier to put down the sweets. I mean, at this point my herbs are tasting out of this world delicious after 17 gallons of juice It was mental health day yesterday - I'm not particularly up on all of the "days" that we have and I'm not sure how they help us. I do know that when I drove past Princes Park yesterday it looked like a festival was on and the queue for the loos was loooooong. Because we miss people. And as per the incredible post by @morningtonchinesemedicine re being sensitive to what people are going through right now, I will say that no matter what people have been presenting with in clinic the last two weeks, it's predominantly been interlaced with mental health woes. Do whatever you can to find joy safely. Honestly, it's the whole point right? And if you have to dress up like a dog-influencer and peg your cowl-neck jumper back & have your photographer sister help you style the shot right, so be it. And if it's in a park, I'll see you there. And when the pubs open, I'll see you there. Mornington & Hawthorn are full as this week, but if you need an appt for the following week, give us a shout. Plus, tell me how good I am for making this happen @tikatheiggy #doppleganger #twinning #ifitwalkslikeaduck

11.01.2022 "It's a vagina flower" - AKA me inadvertently minimising female genitalia. I got this very tough looking tattoo from @abbey_rich juuuuuust before the shit hit the fan in March. I'm a big fan of her work and the day of my booking double checked her instagram page and she had 4 sketches up that looked like this-ish. I was immediately in love and though I never thought I would be a leg tattoo kind of woman, this just seemed like the perfect spot. But why, FFS, do I call it a vag...ina flower when it looks like a vulva? Because our "privates" are spoken about in hushed tones or ascribed nicknames from childhood right through to adulthood. The vulva is the external genitalia - the clitoris, labia minora and majora, the mons pubis (fatty mound over the pubic bone), riiiiight around to the perineum. If all these structures together don't look like a flower I'll eat my hat. The vagina is a tube from the vulva to the cervix. It doesn't look like a flower. So why the hell do I rename, when I know better? Because when random people ask me about my tattoo, I wonder if they'll know what I mean when I say vulva... ...and if I'm dead honest, I still hold a bit of shame around using correct words for genitalia and want to remain polite. I'm acutely aware of the discomfort people have around using words like vagina, vulva, and so I, in all my politeness, eschew those words. But I have no trouble with ovaries or uterus or cervix OR discussing sex, intercourse, masturbation, pleasure or lack thereof. It is predominantly gendered and it is out of politeness. What a mess. It's not lost on me that there's a pussy in this photo. #pussy #yoni #vulva #stickandpoke

10.01.2022 But you cry into your pillow, lock yourself away from your household, lie in bed willing sleep, get nervous in social situations even with people you know and trust. When you are bright, confident, have a good job and/or nice kids, when you don't know what you want to do with your life but feel that you have so much to offer OR you feel like you have nothing to offer at all. When you get so damn angry and you don't know why. When you just want to start a new life and forget t...hat this one existed. When there are too many thoughts. It hurts. And you DON'T want anyone to tell you how to make it better, because you don't believe that that can happen anymore, but you also want with every fibre of your being to know what will make it stop so that you can be like everybody else or at least, so that you can get through the next week. I'm so so sorry you feel that way. I know that it hurts like emptiness and everything all at once. #itseverydaybro #youredoingsowell

10.01.2022 Protection of female health to protect the patriarchal lineage. This was brought up too briefly yesterday in a conference q&a and stuck in my ribs. The conference focuses on Chinese medicine in fertility and is an absolute playground of thoughts and minds. Think about it - female health (that of a person who would naturally ovulate) is largely ignored, silenced, or shut down hormonally UNLESS that person wants to conceive at which point the health field opens up into an oasis... of options. Let me be clear - I love nothing more than working with people on their fertility journeys. It's a time that is full of heart, hope and growth. It is creative and stabilising and life affirming, BUT it is quite a coincidence that a society built on male privilege and male rule should place females at the forefront only when an heir might be borne. If your health/menstrual health is ignored or belittled and you are asked if you are trying to have a baby and then ignored when you're not - get another doctor and tell them to go fuck themselves* ...... *maybe don't, but also it'd be great right Your menstrual health always matters. #menstrualequity #endometriosis #pcos etc

09.01.2022 Commit to following through on a task. Choose a new recipe and follow it meticulously, joyously, with great tunes for company. Pick up a book (not a screen) and read past your limit. Maybe that's two pages, maybe it's twenty. Celebrate each extra minute; every extra page. Monitor your working or conversational attention span; how is it going?... Take a day or two off social media if that feels like the right thing to do. Now pat yourself on the back. Literally. You're doing a bloody good job. In his book Atomic Habits, James Clear suggests building habits from the ground up. Start with two minutes and *make* yourself stop after that. Then do it again the following day. Two minutes. It's absurd, it's short, it's ridic. BUT it builds a pattern. Then once it's set, build it up to 5, 10, 15 - skies the limit. But start itsy bitsy. Congrats if you made it to this sentence #patontheback #attentionspan #itsybitsyspider

08.01.2022 Close your eyes. Did I get you? With any professionals, we place our trust in them... because they're professionals in their field. They may have come recommended, they may be internet famous, or maybe you're in the habit of settling.... Ask questions, be willing to follow your gut if you're not comfortable (in any profession mind you), be ok with a second opinion. But also - if you're in the habit of second guessing everything and jumping ship, look into that. PS I've got a 4pm and a 5pm available Tuesday in Hawthorn. #trustissues #questioneverything #butalsodont

05.01.2022 For anyone experiencing fertility struggles, please have a look at this. Perhaps you might like to contribute to recorded history.

04.01.2022 Freeman & Mi Mi. A tale of the world we live in. While we were all busy frothing over the Cathy Freeman documentary over the weekend, the @firebirdsqld netball team played in the @supernetball Indigenous Round. The Firebirds have on their team @jemma_mimi. Mi Mi is the ONLY indigenous player in the league and they didn't give her even ONE MINUTE on the court. Props to her teammates and coaches who didn't see anything wrong with this play. Representation matters my friends. An...d before anyone suggests anything about teamwork and who was right to be on the court that day, let me just reiterate that it was the indigenous round and she is the only indigenous player. The players, coaches and league have failed her, us and all kiddies watching. Despite the fact that the closest I get to sporting these days is yoga in my backyard and a gentle jog, as a kid sport-sters were my heroes. I was tongue-tied when I met Kyle Vander Kuyp and nearly fainted when I met Nova Peris. I learnt more about the aboriginal flag and what it represented when Cathy did her famous lap with it after her win in 2000, 20 years ago. This week we have learned that we need to do better still. For shame. These events and actions permeate through our society and if you think they have nothing to do with health, I believe you are mistaken. This represents the heath of our nation. This represents what our children and yes also what WE see. These moments lift our spirits and also pull us out of the quagmire of our past deficiencies. Vote #1 Mi Mi and all up and coming aboriginal sporting-stars. #australia is a racist country.

03.01.2022 Book club starts Monday (and Wednesday)! In two zoom gangs, we'll be reading the first 126 pages of Women Who Run with Wolves by Clarissa Pinkola Estés. I decided to chunk the book into 3 due to the common suggestion that it's a little difficult to get through all at once.... If you're a quick reader and don't mind a kindle or an audiobook we still have space for a couple of extras. Even if you've already read the book in the past and would like an opportunity to discuss it! I'm hot for community spirit with tea, wine & candles on the side. When my male friend saw that I was reading this book, he described it as "The key to the hearts of Australian women," and I didn't know how to take that. PS like my photo from literally 18 hours ago when it was summer? Current situation is cuddled in bed with journal, breakfast, the book and Nils Frahm.

02.01.2022 I want you to know about & respect the history of Chinese medicine. This comes directly from a Chinese medicine group discussion that has sprung up regarding the adaptation of Chinese medicine techniques by other modalities - dry needling & cupping by myos and physios, facial gua sha by beauticians etc etc. The question posted was - how do we approach this growing trend & get recognition within our field - they are stealing out methods and then slagging off Chinese medicine... as a whole. That was the gist of it. Here for it. But... My response was this:"The conversation begins with white-washing of techniques. I actually think it begins within our own industry. Chinese medicine is often white-washed to suit our audience for fair reasons (they don't know what spleen qi is etc etc), but what are we doing to educate our patients so that they can go out and spread the word. Do you have a section on your website explaining some historical or cultural points? Do you thank the Chinese culture that gifted this to us? I think we can begin in our own backyard." I'm a white women in wellness. Chinese medicine. I barely get time in a consult to cover what we need to, and I need to do better at gently educating my patients. And to you, my mostly white, female audience. You can take this information & do what we do when we call out bullshit misogyny or racism. Question your physio or myo on whether they know the culture from which their technique comes and there are many - China & Greece spring to mind immediately - I'm sure there are more. Get curious about the health techniques that you enjoy. Don't let our system white-wash your experience of the world, because it is a big beautiful place full of diverse methods and recipes and views. But they do not belong to white people. White people have colonised and continue to do so. It is our responsibility to get out there and do the work. To do better. Pay respect and check your appropriation. Ask permission where possible. Say thank you in your gratitude journal to those who came before you and for god's sake - do it out loud too. I'd like to hear your thoughts on this. via @the.pinklemonade #culturalappropriation

01.01.2022 Doppelganger Also a post about mental health. The best thing about clinic in this particular time is lifting people's moods. Clearing haze. Giving hope. Being a support within my scope of practice. Your mental health is important to me. You are a physical body with a mind that roves throughout. It doesn't just sit atop. But perhaps through this time, grief & sadness are separating the two.... Elements of our identity have been taken, but they are atill there. You are still you. In Chinese medicine, the mind is not one entity, but rather five unique incarnations. Each associated with different organs, each uniquely recognisable depending on what signs or symptoms are showing up. So, by navigating what is going on for you - herbs, acupuncture, dietary & lifestyle advice can be prescribed. It can be navigated. You are navigating it. #mentalhealth #mindyourbusiness #ruok
