24.01.2022 "Starting my apprenticeship while I was still at school allowed me to complete my Year 12 Certificate, and get a head start on the career I always wanted," Alex said. Whilst completing Year 10, Alex undertook on-site work experience with electricians in domestic, commercial and industrial buildings. "Looking back, work experience was a great idea," he said.... School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are a great start to working life - they also provide you with training, study and you get paid! Most apprenticeships and traineeships will allow you to study certificate III or IV level qualifications or even diplomas - and if you eventually decide you want to go onto uni, those qualifications will give you a selection rank score to get into uni! School Based Apprenticeships and Traineeships are great for a variety of reasons :)

20.01.2022 How to answer tricky interview questions: where do you see yourself in 5 years time? The dreaded five year plan question is a pain. Reply that youll still be in the same role, and you mightnt seem ambitious enough; reply that youll be in the interviewers seat, and you might seem a little too ambitious; scoff at the idea of planning five years in advance, and you may as well show yourself the door. Wheres the middle ground? Whats the right approach?... 18.01.2022 COVER LETTERS are more important than resumes (for most job applications) Im returning to the subject of cover letters as Im seeing lots of professional resume writers offering their services which is great and necessary to a point - however the resume is not the most important document when applying for most (!) jobs. You can jam as much as you want into a resume - but if you are not writing an appropriate cover letter to accompany the resume, your chances of getting a...n interview are very slim! Most advertised jobs have a list of requirements or criteria - you must address those requirements or criteria in your cover letter to have a good chance of being invited to interview. If youve been applying for jobs and not writing cover letters, that will be a key reason you are not being successful in obtaining interviews. Add to the problem that employers are not great at telling you that they want you to write a letter responding to the requirements or criteria. It is up to YOU - check and double check whether the job advert has requirements or criteria. I see so many seek.com.au job adverts for example that do not make it clear you have to respond with a cover letter, and then after you click on apply, or after you click on the position description (PD) - you will see some clear requirements or criteria that need to be addressed in a cover letter. The resume is NOT the most important document (for most advertised jobs) - the resume just needs to be clear and easy to read - a list of what you have been doing up to this point in your life/career. Dont just focus on putting together a sparkling resume, crafted with power and dynamic words, littered with keywords. Most employers will read your resume - but more importantly employers will assess and assign a score to your cover letter, and those candidates with the highest scores will be invited to interview - your cover letter will be assessed to compare your application to others - it is your responses to each of the job requirements or criteria that are being assessed, literally each response is given a score, and those applicants with the best scores will go through to the interview stage. And then when you do get to interview, again your interview responses will be assessed and given a score, and the person with the highest scores (generally) will be offered the position. So many employers work on this basis - public and private sector employers. Dont fall into the trap of thinking you just need a great resume - it is not enough - the cover letter is definitely the most important document (in most cases). For more information on writing resumes and cover letters see the links below, or you can post questions here :) https://cbmcareerdevelopment.webs.com/apps/links/ www.facebook.com/cbmcareerdevelopment

13.01.2022 Want to study at uni for a new career or career change but not sure where to start? This information might help: Firstly it is good to see the qualification levels in Australia - many employers will recruit you from any degree which is a level 7 qualification - you dont always have to know exactly what work you want to do - you can choose to study subjects that you like or enjoy - employers will recruit you because you will have gained specific skills through your studies e....g. communication, teamwork, problem solving, research, analytical, critical thinking - https://www.aqf.edu.au/aqf-levels This is a good example of employers who recruit from a wide range of degrees - have a look at the long list of subject areas these employers recruit from here - https://www.qld.gov.au//opportuni/greater-graduate-program For further example - there are lots of employers who recruit from arts and humanities degrees, particularly employers who are not traditionally seen as arts/humanities organisations - the key to getting employment after uni is to understand you are applying for a graduate job or program, not a job in the open job market that requires two to five years experience - these are example companies that will recruit you and train you for a year or two through their graduate program before you become a permanent employee - https://au.gradconnection.com/graduate/arts-and-humanities/ Some people want to know what career areas have strong growth or job prospects - this is a great resource to give you information on the jobs listed as having strong growth for the future - however you should only be guided by the list as not everyone is suited to working in healthcare for example! It is important to look at the detail of what needs to be studied in order to work in some of these areas - take time to look through the subjects you would have to study in order to get a qualification - comparing one or two subject lists might help you decide which degree you want to start with, and yes its ok to change your mind, the study system is very flexible - have a look at the future job growth areas here - https://joboutlook.gov.au/future-outlook.aspx If you would like a career counselling appointment - in person, or by phone/skype to discuss any of the above information further, call me on 0434408698 or email [email protected]

08.01.2022 Uni student or graduate considering your employment after study? This type of report below can be misleading, and disheartening if youre a student or graduate - its an attention grabbing headline https://www.news.com.au///8b49ce56b875caa596b6bf0b6bd67125... Because the article then goes on to clarify that the report is pointing out that those with creative arts, communication, humanities, science/maths degrees may take longer to gain their graduate employment, however these are also the graduates that may carry more of the skills needed for future work, and these graduates will have many of the skills that graduate employers are seeking. In my experience as a uni Career Counsellor and a uni recruiter, graduate employers are seeking 3 key things: 1) an indication of your performance - that is your grades, as that is an indication of your performance - how is your GPA going? 2) work experience, ideally work experience related to your degree - but any work experience demonstrates you have a work ethic, that includes maccas, dominoes, woolies etc - employers just need to know that you have a work ethic 3) demonstration of skills e.g. initiative, communication, teamwork, technology, time management - you MUST prepare examples of how you have gained these skills 4) and then you have to present all of that in a very technical way to graduate employers through their recruitment and selection processes - getting a grad job is competitive! There are many great grad employers including Ernst and Young, and Queensland Govt that will actively recruit grads from many different degrees including Arts/Humanities/Science - sometimes I worry that prospective and current students can be disheartened by the titles of these articles - heres a couple of examples of the disciplines that these companies recruit from https://au.gradconnection.com/employers/ey/ https://www.qld.gov.au//opportuni/greater-graduate-program For more career information and resources see: https://www.facebook.com/CBMCareerDevelopment/

03.01.2022 Year 12s! Results are out tomorrow - I know some young people dont want to show their parents, I know some parents who dont talk to their kids for days after results days. Come on folks - theres more to life than year 12 results! They are just a moment in time, and they dont determine your long-term future :) So - year 12s you have some choices - *MOST IMPORTANTLY those with non-ops can do exactly the same as those with op results* * go to work - youll still need to ge...t a qualification in most cases, probably a Cert III at the least * go onto traineeships or apprenticeships - Im a huge fan of these as they give you training and study and you get paid! And whatever you study can use to get into uni if thats what you want in the future - heres some useful links: https://ectraining.com.au/job-board/ https://www.busyatwork.com.au/support-jobseekers/jobs/ * go to TAFE - again Im a huge fan of TAFE especially diplomas as they are a high level qualification offering great experience and knowledge, AND you can get a VET loan which means you dont have to pay fees upfront, and you only pay back the loan when you earning at leasat $900 per week, and you will only pay back around $8 or $10 per week, and you dont see the payments as they go straight from your tax (this is the same system that applied to uni loans) - heres some example diplomas https://tafeqld.edu.au/search-results.html?q=diploma * go to uni - reminder: you can use certificates and diplomas, and FREE tertiary preparation courses to get into uni (see my previous post) As you can see from the attached picture, whichever pathway you choose can affect your future earnings. Whichever option you choose, you are not locked into any of them, you can change your mind, lots of people do - you dont know what you dont know :) For more career information and resources see https://www.facebook.com/CBMCareerDevelopment/
