25.01.2022 Do you wake up in the morning with a STIFF or ACHEY LOW BACK? But then it eases as you get moving? Have you wondered whether you should see treatment for this?... Well today Im going to answer all your questions! There can be a number of reasons that can be contributing to your sore low back in the morning. Firstly we will discuss what lifestyle factors may be playing a part. And then we will discuss what criteria you should use to assess whether your low back discomfort should be assessed by a health professional. Its important to look at your daily life postures How good is your mattress? The lifespan of a good quality mattress is 7 years. How old is your mattress? What is your sleeping posture like? Do you sleep on your stomach? Are you spending longer than 7-8 hrs in bed? Are you slumping on the couch watching tv? Do you go straight from the couch to bed of an evening? Do you spend all day sitting at your desk in front of the computer? Do you exercise regularly without stretching your body? Spinal alignment? Is your spine in need of an assessment from a health professional? Areas of your spine that arent aligned optimally will contribute greatly to a stiff and sore low back in the morning. Do you have arthritis present in your lower back? All of these factors listed will contribute to a stiff and sore lower back, especially in the morning when you have been immobile for a period of time. A spine that is optimally aligned takes the pressures of daily life evenly and functions better with less pain and stiffness. And this will also optimise any changes you make to your daily routine to help your spinal mobility. If you would like any further information or would to know how chiropractic can help you wake up with ease in the morning then please contact us. We love to hear from you! 25.01.2022 What is the difference between Tennis elbow and Golfers elbow? Do you suffer from elbow pain and not sure whether you have tennis elbow or golfers elbow? Well Today we are going to chat about what exactly the difference is between the two conditions, what symptoms you may experience and how these conditions come about.... Tennis elbow or Golfers elbow? Tennis elbow is inflammation on the outside of the elbow- also referred to as lateral tendinopathy. Golfers elbow is inflammation on the inside of the elbow- also referred to as Medial epicondylitis. Both of these conditions are an overuse injury of the tendons that attach to the elbow. Contrary to the name they are not just caused by playing tennis or golf. Overuse can come from an array of activities and most of them are repetitive in nature. Such as: -Typing/computer us -Heavy lifting- manual work -Gripping action such as with tennis racquet or golf club Symptoms you may experience: Tennis elbow produces pain on the outside of the elbow into the forearm and wrist. The outside of the elbow will be tender to touch. With tennis elbow the tendon that extends the wrist and spreads the fingers out wide is inflamed so these actions will be hard to perform. Golfers elbow produces pain on the inside of the elbow and radiates into the forearm and wrist. You may even experience tingling in the hand. The inside of the elbow will be tender to touch. With a golfers elbow the tendon that flex the wrist and contracts the fingers are inflamed so these actions will be hard or painful to perform. If either of these conditions are left untreated this can create a shortening or hardening of the tendon leading to a change in function. So if you are watching this video and suffering from elbow pain similar to what we have discussed today then please contact us. Or if you know someone who could benefit from this information then be sure to pass this along. We love to hear from you! Britt & Lisa Errol St Chiro www.errolstchiro.com.au

24.01.2022 Curves Cannot be Changed in the Spine Debunking this myth. What treatment can change spinal curves?... What is the most researched Chiropractic technique on earth? What is the most scientific Chiropractic technique out there? What is the most results driven Chiropractic technique you can find? THE ANSWER IS Chiropractic BioPhysics (CBP) This is a non surgical form of spinal and postural corrective treatment with over 200 peer reviewed published papers. Improving curve issues may be the answer to many people’s chronic or persistent back and neck issues. CPB is the most published named technique in Index Medicus in the chiropractic profession. This form of spinal correction is the most scientifically validated technique in chiropractic, world wide. CBP combines biomechanics, biology, physics and mathematics to analyse the spinal curves and correct them. How long has CBP been around for? CBP was founded by Don and his second with Deanne Harrison in 1982. It was registered as a Non Profit organisation in 1989 and is now run by Don’s son Deed Harrison. Dr. Deed runs the training centre in Boise Idaho, where chiropractors undertake training and where people can get spinal treatment. Message us if you have any questions. 21.01.2022 Do you suffer from neck pain? We chat about the Number 1 posture that causes neck pain. Firstly lets establish what Forward head carriage is...... Forward head carriage is exactly what the name entails- head posture out of neutral posture and sits forward. It is usually due to cervical spine dysfunction that moves the head from its proper position further forward. The more the head moves forward, the greater gravity produces weight bearing stress on the neck. How does that cause neck pain? Forward head posture increases the workload for many of the muscles that attach to the cervical spine, which has the job of holding the head up. Forward head posture leads to muscle imbalances as the body tries to adapt to try and hold a heavy head up for straight ahead vision. This can weaken these supportive muscles and they can become shorter and tighter. This is a prominent cause of neck pain as the abnormal stress on the joints and muscles and nerves can cause significant pain and long term can result in degenerative disc disease, osteoarthritis or disc prolapse. Its highly important to create good postural habits from an early age so that forward head carriage doesnt lead to long term health issues as an adult, but also to improve quality of life. And really dont we look so much better when we are sitting up straight and holding ourselves in perfect upright posture!!!! If youre listening to this and youre suffering from neck pain then contact us to find out more about Chiropractic BioPhysics. www.errolstchiro.com.au

20.01.2022 What is a Dowagers hump? Do I have a Dowagers hump What causes the hump? Can you help fix my Dowagers hump?... These are some of the common questions we get asked. 1.What is a Dowagers hump? This term is used to describe the increased curve in the upper and/or mid section of the spine. There is a normal backward curve in the mid back (thoracic spine) known as a kyphosis. This curve is seen when looking at the spine from the side view, however, there are several reasons why this curve can increase. This increase curve can have a hump appearance, what is medically known as a increased kyphosis or Dowagers hump. 2. Do I have a Dowagers hump? A practitioner, such as a chiropractor, physiotherapist, osteopath or medical doctor that is trained in this area, can do an examination to determine the spinal curvatures. Often this problem can be observed, however, the cause of the increase curve needs to be established. That way, appropriate advice about care can be given. An x-ray evaluation is the first imaging that is requested in determining the cause of the increased kyphosis. 3.What causes the hump? Mostly we see the increase in curve due to postural reasons, however there are also structural reasons whey the curve can develop. Postural causes With poor posture from excessive sitting can over time, can cause a rounding of the mid back. This is worsened with a lack of exercise, perpetuating the weakness of the upper back muscles that would normally pull the shoulders back and down. The upper back hump can generally be associated with an increase in forward head posture, causing the rounding up top of the spine. Typically, postural kyphosis can be helped with the right advice, postural exercises and a sound ergonomic set up or work or study. If the curve feels stuck then manual therapy and spinal corrective care, such as Chiropractic BioPhysics, may be warranted. Structural causes include -Congenital causes. - Scheuermanns disease - osteoporotic fractures - sports injuries If you know someone who would benefit from this please tag them below. 20.01.2022 Special times. On our last day visiting our eldest son Sasha, he took us up to Port Stephens, Nelson Bay NSW. It was wonderful to see this young man. He has grown up so much. Living for 18 months in Mt Isa working solo as a chiropractor. He knew no one up there, if anyone knows where Mt. Isa is, it’s in the middle of no where. You can’t quite pop home to Melbourne when you are homesick. He stuck it out. He ran the office, hiring and connecting with the community. He made fri...ends and had lots of amazing life changing experiences up there. Now he’s working in a practice he would’ve only dreamt about years ago. He’s made more beautiful friends and we were fortunate enough to meet some of them over the weekend. We raised our children to be independent, to be strong to be kind. He’s all of these things and more. We are so proud of the gentleman he has become. An elderly patient in the UK, when l was pregnant with Sasha, told me that this child (pointing to my belly) is not yours. I asked her what she meant. She said You are borrowing this child for 18years and then you have to give it back!. Holy moly that statement still brings tears to my eyes-because it’s true. I have had to remind myself of this quote when he went to kindergarten, to primary school, to high school, to university, overseas, to Mt Isa, to Newcastle and I’m sure the list will go on. It’s these get togethers that are THE important things in life, that make our lives rich. Happy Tuesday everyone. Lisa X

19.01.2022 For those that experience persistent neck pain then you know how much this impacts your day to day life. Will I wake with it today? Could it lead to a headache? I have an important meeting to get through, I hope the pain doesnt show up on my face. Its frustrating, not only putting up with the pain, but trying to figure out the WHY? Why doesnt this pain go away completely and will I be putting up with this, and worse as I get older? More questions than answers for your nec...k pain. One of the reasons why neck pain can persist, even with the help of natural therapies, can be the presence of an altered forward neck curve. People that wish to deal with health issues naturally can find that with curve issues therapies such as massage, yoga, chiropractic and osteopathy etc., only give temporary relief. The problem of relaxing muscles and loosening stiff and tight joints has short term benefits. We often see that a severe reduction and a straightening of the normal forward neck curve will add undue stress and loading to the neck, that will, over time lead to joint stiffness and muscle tension in the neck. The ideal neck curve of 40 degrees, providing support and acting as a shock absorber. The head is heavy and not only does the neck need to support this 5-6 kilogram weight, but it needs to move too. Research has shown that a neck curve that is halved, around 20 degrees will have a greater likelihood of neck pain. If the curve was reduced to zero, then there was an 18 times likelihood of neck pain. (1) OUCH! Can anything be done to Help Improve Reduced Neck Curves? The only non surgery option that has the most published research papers is Chiropractic BioPhysics or CBP. This form of spinal curve corrective technique combines physics, biomechanics and anatomy to assess the spine and multimodal approach to bring the spine closer to its ideal. Treatment includes Denneroll home traction, in house Denneroll table traction and mirror image adjusting and exercises. Not every person is suitable for CBP work, so visiting a certified CBP practitioner to see if you qualify for treatment is necessary. Visit the Ideal Spine website www.idealspine.com Lisa

18.01.2022 During this period of lockdown we have seen a lot of people present to the practice with acute rib pain. This can be extremely uncomfortable so today I thought Id chat with you about what symptoms you will experience if your ribs are out of alignment, possible causes and what you can do to avoid aggravation to your ribs. What will you experience if your ribs are out of alignment? -Trouble taking a full breath in... -Pain between shoulder blades -Pain can refer to the front of the chest. When the pain refers to the front of the chest it can be a worry for people that there may be heart involvement. Note what side the pain is on, any trauma that is associated and any other health factors. Its important to be diligent and see your doctor if there is any reason for concern that it may be something more sinister than rib pain. Aggravating factors for rib pain: -Sitting in awkward positions at your desk -Important to make sure that when youre working at a desk to have everything in front of you so you arent twisting and moving awkwardly as this is quite aggravating for the rib cage. -Twisting movements that catch your body off guard When you are moving- especially turning its important to make sure you turn your whole body and not twist at your torso. Take the time to make sure your body is aligned before you lift something or bend over also. -Picking up kids from awkward positions If you have small children that you are constantly picking up- try to take care and make sure you are picking them up front so your weight is evenly distributed. If you are experiencing pain similar to the symptoms of rib pain described then we advise that you seek advice from a spinal health practitioner, most of the time rib pain will need a helpful hand in resolving. Or if you would like any further information please dont hesitate to contact us. Britt and Lisa www.errolstchiro.com.au

17.01.2022 Love getting out into Nonno and Nonna’s garden. Here I’m picking some beans for lunch! Italian beans, we call them. Seeds that were brought over by some family member over 50 years ago. (Oops-accidentally of course!)... We eat them during summer as they are green and whatever is left over we leave in the plant to dry for the winter months. We add them to soups and stews. We also leave some seeds to replant the following year. I love the process of quietly picking and enjoying the wonderful taste of home grown produce. A joy of mine. Like your health, what you sow you reap. If you look after your soil, add the right amount of fertiliser, sunlight and water, then the plant is strong and healthy. What do we need as human beings to be strong, energetic and healthy? We too need the right food and water. The right exercise, spinal alignment and rest. There are certain things our genetics require for us to THRIVE. Tough talking about this after Christmas, l hear you. My genes may start to express themselves in a not so positive way if l, yes me - the chiropractor , doesn’t get back on track! Happy holidays everyone! Lisa x

16.01.2022 Weekend was about being creative. Yours? I spent time designing my mosaic to go on top of the oven and sink.... This English cast iron stove is something that my father kept for me for nearly 30 years. It was in the kitchen of my first house. I thought he’d got rid of it, but it was in a dark corner of the shed. ‘You told me to keep it!’ Thank goodness he’s a hoarder. I had a dream that I’d use it one day, and a few years ago built this under cover area on the side of a shed. I finally found ‘Karl’ a dear old bricklayer that built the base. The day that Karl did the job, a dear friend said ‘Hey Lisa, come and pick up some spare mosaic tiles l have’ . Yesterday l went to see my friend and picked up some tiles. Can anyone guess what my mosaic will be of? It was interesting designing this wall as I’m making it a history of my life - my southern Italian background and the things l enjoy. Here are some of the things in my mosaic; - sea creatures, as l love the sea - figs and vines and other fruits that l grew up with - hands as this is what l deliver my care as a chiropractor - Italian cards - little espresso coffee cups - chickens of course And more... It’s interesting that the stove came to me at the beginning of my adulthood, my marriage and career. I still have the same husband and the same career - both things l dearly love. Funny to sit and think of all the things, the people and the learning l have done since l first saw that stove. Now, finally after a lifetime, we meet again. Me and my little cast iron stove. Looking forward to baking sourdough bread and pizza in this little beauty. And sharing it with others. That’s what it’s all about really! I have a cast iron pot and skillet all ready too. Don’t give up on those dreams, no matter how small they seem. Happy Sunday everyone! Lisa X

16.01.2022 What could be causing your teenagers rounded posture? In some teenagers there can be more than just poor posture causing a rounding of the upper back, this is called Scheuermanns disease. Today we are going to talk about :... What Scheuermanns disease is, how prevalent it is, best way to diagnose and what you can do about it if your teenager has it. Scheuermanns disease is an increased rounding of the thoracic posture of the spine. It commonly leads to slouching posture. It has a tendency to run in families and mostly develops in adolescence, between the age of 10-15 years, more common in boys. The best way to diagnose Scheuermanns disease is with X-rays to assess spinal curvature but if you are unsure if your teenager may need an assessment there is a screening test you can do at home. It will give you an idea if Scheuermanns is a possibility. Get your teenager to stand up straight and then bend forward and touch their toes. You should assess from the side and look at what their upper back is doing when they move. If there is a noticeable hump across their mid back when the bend forward then that warrants further assessment with a spinal health practitioner. If your teenager is diagnosed with Scheuermanns, its important for them to make postural changes. This includes seated posture, remembering to sit and stand up straight, posture pole exercise and spinal treatment to help with mobility, if joints are sore and stiff. Encouraging an active lifestyle for your teenager is important, including regular exercise and stretching. If you are reading this and feel your teenager may have Scheuermanns disease or you are constantly nagging your teen to straighten up then contact us or if you would like further information please contact us. We always love to hear from you. Britt and Lisa Errol Street Chiropractic North Melbourne 9329 1118

16.01.2022 Our body is designed to function in incredible ways, its not until you do something about the pain or dysfunction your experiencing do you unlock its incredible potential

15.01.2022 Do you wake up in the morning with a stiff or sore lower back? But then it eases as you get moving? Have you wondered whether you should see treatment for this?... Well today Im going to answer all your questions! There can be a number of reasons that can be contributing to your sore low back in the morning. Firstly we will discuss what lifestyle factors may be playing a part. And then we will discuss what criteria you should use to assess whether your low back discomfort should be assessed by a health professional. Its important to look at your daily life postures -How good is your mattress? The lifespan of a good quality mattress is 7 years. How old is your mattress? -What is your sleeping posture like? Do you sleep on your stomach? -Are you spending longer than 7-8 hrs in bed? -Are you slumping on the couch watching tv? Do you go straight from the couch to bed of an evening? -Do you spend all day sitting at your desk in front of the computer? -Do you exercise regularly without stretching your body? -Spinal alignment? Is your spine in need of an assessment from a health professional? Areas of your spine that arent aligned optimally will contribute greatly to a stiff and sore low back in the morning. -Do you have arthritis present in your lower back? All of these factors listed will contribute to a stiff and sore lower back, especially in the morning when you have been immobile for a period of time. The reason that you may find you lower back stiffness eases as you get moving in the morning is because the mechanoreceptors increase and the nociceptors (pain receptors) dull down. If you are waking regularly with a sore low back and you have made changes to your daily routine then its advisable to get your spine assessed by a professional. A spine that is optimally aligned takes the pressures of daily life evenly and functions better with less pain and stiffness. And this will also optimise any changes you make to your daily routine to help your spinal mobility. If you would like any further information then please contact us. 15.01.2022 An emergency where chiropractic couldnt help!! This slipped disc only slipped when the models spinal alignment was disturbed . It broke!... Exactly what happens in the human spine. When the forces on the discs are uneven or abnormally high from; - reduced lumbar curve - increased lumbar curve - side tilt in normal straight spine, eg. from a short leg on one side - prolonged poor posture - lack of core strength - stuck joints in low back creating compensations subluxations - repetitive actions, such as digging or lifting day in day out, with poor technique And more... Then AND ONLY THEN- Can the disc bulge, prolapse or herniate! Not age related people! And all the points l made above will cause degenerative change over time because the abnormal forces remain on the lumbar spine. No such thing as - NORMAL WEAR & TEAR And dont ignore your low back pain. Message me or comment below if you have any questions. Lisa, director www.errolstchiro.com.au

13.01.2022 Are you thinking that we made a mistake in the title? I dont blame you. During these last few months in lockdown, we have had many of our practice members complain about putting on weight. Our routines have more disrupted. Gyms closed, curfews, working from home, the list goes on and on. ... Something has to give, and exercise and diet are two areas that have suffered during these times. So where does the question about what clothes not to wear come into the picture. Im talking about people wearing tracksuit pants, leggings or any pants that are elasticated and stretchy. I have found, personally, that living in pyjama bottoms all day, day in day out can mean that your waistline stretches and expands because of the expansive waist bands. 5 Steps to Maintaining Good Weight during Lockdown (and beyond) 1.Get out of your tracksuit pant, leggings or elastic wasted pants. Start by getting out of these elasticated numbers and get into jeans, zip up trousers or skirts (non-elasticated of course). They are a great indicator of whether you are putting on weight. Are your jeans getting too tight, your work pants. With all the online meetings people are attending as they are working from home, what your wear on the lower half cannot be seen. So understandably, the most comfortable, no dry cleaning garment was substituted. The tracky dacks as we commonly refer to these loose waisted, comfy pants. 2.Diarise your daily exercise. If you have been putting off exercising, then now is a great time to start. Then and only then can those elasticated pants make an appearance. Get out walking, riding your bike, joining in on a online zumba or yoga class. Get you diary and mark 30-40 minutes a day to get back into some exercise. Remember to include some aerobic exercise, strength work and some exercise. Avoid doing the same exercise each day and if you have children, include them in too. Kick the ball around or riding a bike are fun ways to get out and include that vitally important movement. 3.Plan your meals 4. Get a buddy to keep you accountable 5. 3 fat burning tips Lisa, director www.errolstchiro.com.au

13.01.2022 My spine broke during this video, and the disc slipped out. You can hear it hitting the ground. Just me in the office and l just started laughing and laughing. 12.01.2022 Does it hurt to straighten up your posture? Do you feel your shoulders round but it hurts to straighten up? If this is something you experience often and wonder what is going on and what can you do about it, so it doesnt keep annoying you, then read on. ... Its not only adults that experience this. Parents of school age children and teenagers may often hear them complaining. Can you sit up please and stop slouching! parents can hear themselves saying to these children and teenagers. Children and teenager get pain too. In on study done this year, 1000 Danish children aged between 8-16 were analysed for pain. They found that 71.5% had experienced pain that lasted for more than a week and of this percentage, 28.7 % had back pain. (1) So whatever the age of the person suffering with this pain, what is the cause? Generally we see postural issues. This is what it looks like: -Rounding of the upper and mid back -Forward head carriage, where the head is sitting in front to the shoulders -Excessive sitting, from studying, working or on electronic devices -Incorrect ergonomics, where the desk height, computer screen or chair support are not correct -Insufficient breaks with sitting -Not enough exercise to strengthen mid back and stretch front of chest Structural issues. These are more serious but not as common. Appropriate examinations need to rule out anything nasty or anything structural that may be causing the pain on straightening up. Whats the pain from? The pain can come from fatigued muscles and other soft tissues and/or joints that are stuck in the spine. The jamming of the joints can make it difficult to maintain a neutral and upright posture. The slumped and rounded shoulder posture is often the default posture in these people. What can you do? See a practitioner that deals with the spine, such as a chiropractor, osteo or physio. If the spinal joints are stuck, then these joints need to get adjusted and loosened. Strengthen weak muscles, stretch tight muscles and improve posture. Tag someone below if they need this. Lisa 1. 11.01.2022 Have you had referred pain down your arm? Had a series of tests and seen a few practitioners and still the referred arm pain is bothering you? It could be a postural issue In our office we see people who have gone through just that. Lots of tests and after seeing a bunch of people, they are no wiser in what is actually going on with them. ... Often we find that the problem is a postural one. This are the postural changes that they present with: forward head carriage (FHC) This is where the head, that should normally sit on top of the shoulders is now sitting in front of the shoulders, placing strain and stress to the lower neck Rounding of the shoulders. Look around you at any time. How many people are looking up? More and more people spend a large chunk of the day on their phones, laptops and other devices that cause them to round their shoulders forward. Both these postures can, over time cause pressure on the nerves exciting the neck, and this condition is known as Thoracic Outlet Syndrome. How do you know if you have Thoracic Outlet Syndrome This condition is diagnosed if we find that the above described posture is present, the rounded shoulders and the forward head posture, and if all other causes have been eliminated. If X-rays and scans have ruled out nerve involvement at the spinal level, then we work on the correcting posture and neck function and alignment. What can you do to help yourself Start by becoming more aware of your posture. Then start to improve your sitting posture, reduce time on your electronic devices and if you are working from home, ensure that your work set up is ergonomic. Once you have done all you can to improve your posture and the referred arm pain is still present, then a visit to a chiropractor, or osteopath could your next consideration. Any questions, please comment below. If you know someone needs to read this information, please tag then or pass it on. Lisa, CBP certified chiropractor www.errolstchiro.com.au

11.01.2022 Debunking myths about chiropractic. When someone is in pain with their neck and back then chiropractic care may be an option. One of the things that may stop people from coming in is the idea that chiropractic treatment is painful. In this blog we look at a common misconception that chiropractic treatment hurts. ... What causes pain? Tenderness or pain in the neck and back indicate that the tissues and joints are inflamed. This may be a consequence of joints that are not moving ideally and/or a misaligned spine. This is what we need to determine. When we have someone lying on the examination table for an assessment, then this alone can feel tender and sometimes painful. We explain each step If we feel a certain part of the assessment or treatment may cause a bit of discomfort, we make sure we communicate that to people. Explaining what treatment options are and giving people the choice of manual or instrument therapy helps to alleviate the uncertainty. If you know what to expect then you can relax more and allow the practitioner to do what is necessary. Noises: Our tables move up and down to accomodate different aspects of examination or treatment and that can startle people. Explaining when we are moving the table up and down before we actually move the table allows people to get used to the different sounds. The table has a drop piece section to assist in certain adjustments. This does make a noise and not being warned can startle people. Relaxing: When people are getting used to the treatment we help the relaxation process by also reminding them to breath. A mindful breathe in and a slow and steady breathe out relaxes the person getting care and gives them something to focus on. Ask questions: If you have a problem with your spine or posture and have questions around care then please feel free to contact us and one of our chiropractors. It’s important that you feel you are in the right place and that all your questions have been answered. Lisa, Director www.errolstchiro.com.au

10.01.2022 Happy Birthday Chiropractic 125 years. This is what Dr. Adam Smith from the Australian Chiropractic Association writes. We the chiropractors of today, stand tall on the accomplishments of those unrelenting men and women who served before us. Today marks the 125th anniversary of the first reported chiropractic adjustment, conceived and given by Daniel David Palmer, in Davenport, Iowa, 18 September 1895.... Through the decades since, so much has changed, but the intent of chiropractic remains as strong as ever. This profession now positively impacts the lives of those people needing our care, in all parts of the world. That is why 125 years of chiropractic adjustments needs to be celebrated! Please, take a moment to envision a world that never benefited from chiropractic care. The millions of lives who, but for their visit to a chiropractor, would have been worse in some way, large or small. Much has been written about the first chiropractic adjustment, where D.D. Palmer reportedly cured the deafness of Harvey Lillard. Mr Lillard was an elevator operator and custodian of the building where D.D. Palmer had an office. Having been mostly deaf for 17 years, it was obviously amazing to both men when Mr Lillards hearing began to improve after DD. Palmer adjusted his spine. By 1897-98 D.D. Palmer had developed the experience of that day into the theory that displaced spinal vertebra could have a negative effect on health. Chiropractic is taught all over the world now and more and more people are benefiting from a healthier spine. Im grateful to be in this profession for 30 years now and my eldest son, born a few days from the centenary of Chiropractic, is now a chiropractor too. Happy Birthday Chiropractic Lisa, Director

10.01.2022 Do you like this quote? With all the changes to life with the restrictions in Melbourne - fear seems to be paramount in our minds, in our words and in our actions. This week l saw my brother go into hospital for a major, potentially life threatening condition. He is what made this quote jump out at me. With a young family to look after, he took the news, faced it head on and started a journey of understanding what this condition was, what the forms of treatment were, what hi...s prognosis was. He then asked for help. This was a big thing for a man to do. He knew that his illness was not just physical, that he needed to address all aspects of life. The physical. The emotional. The spiritual. The chemical. He started to make changes straight away. He was scared, but he he took action and l saw a side of my brother that l never saw before. The rawness. His eyes are a beautiful blue, and they were clearer than lve ever seen them before. He didnt fear. It was courage that l saw. He could have gone the other way and fall into a heap and give up! But, he is strong and fearless. Lets fear less and do the best we can. With whatever faces us. All the best and happy Tuesday everyone. Lisa, Director X

09.01.2022 True! His first words on waking this morning. Happy Fathers Day to all the Dads out there. My Dad (Nonno Rocco) is very special to me. I dont give him a big Fathers Day present because he often gets lots of little presents when l see (things are a bit different at the moment!), but little things that l know he will giggle at, or enjoy to eat or be totally useful in the garden. ... My boys wont give their Dad a Fathers Day present, but will do the same, from time to time with their Dad, Andrew. Happy Fathers Day to all the new Dads who are having their 1st Fathers Day (in lockdown) in Melbourne and for those Dads that are no longer with us on this earth. Love you Dad (and love my crazy husband Andrew too). Lisa X @errolstchiropractic

09.01.2022 Is your hand pain Carpal Tunnel syndrome? Are you suffering from hand pain? And unsure whether you have carpal tunnel syndrome? Today we are going to discuss:... What Carpal tunnel syndrome is? How does it occur? Symptoms you could experience? 1. What is carpal Tunnel syndrome? Carpal tunnel syndrome is compression (pressure) of the median nerve which travels along the forearm to the palm of the hand. The carpal tunnel is a narrow rigid passageway of ligaments and bones at the base of the hand - it houses the median nerve and the tendons that bend the fingers. The median nerve provides feeling on the palm side of the thumb, index, middle and part of the ring fingers. It controls the small muscles at the base of the thumb. 2. What causes carpal tunnel syndrome? -Trauma/ injury -Pregnancy, fluid retention -Repetitive strain -Cyst -Sprain 3. Symptoms you could experience? Pain usually starts gradually - most prominent at night. If it is chronic then the pain can progress to constant during the day. Common to wake up feeling like need to shake out hand. Frequent numbness or tingling in the fingers especially the thumb, index, middle or part of the ring finger. Can find there is weakness in the use of the hand, trouble gripping objects. If these symptoms sound similar to the hand pain that youre experiencing then contact us for further information on what you can do to improve your pain. If you know someone who may be experiencing carpal tunnel then please pass this video along to them. Watch the video by going to our IGTV channel or find out last post. Lisa, Director

09.01.2022 Forward head carriage is caused by a number of different factors. Its when your head is sitting in front of your shoulders instead of on top of it. There are a few different things that we do in our daily lives that contribute to this change in posture. 1.Sitting/ standing slouched. Especially on the couch watching tv as many of us are spending more time watching netflix and playing video games.... 2. Poor work/study set up. With a lot of people working from home, the set up has been less than ideal, often far from the sound ergonomic set up they have in the office. We have seen people sitting at their laptops daily instead of using a monitor that they usually have in the office. Using laptops dose not encourage your head to be in a neutral position. Poor desk chair and I incorrect desk/chair height can contribute to forward head posture also. If you are unable to work from a monitor or sit in a high quality desk chair then its vital that you get up and move every 30 minutes to take pressure off your spine and change your posture. Another great idea is to prop up your laptop and use a separate keyboard. 3. Sitting on our phones/computers/ technology daily. Phones are a big contributing factor to forward head carriage, our constant looking down at them and the prolonged daily use. 4. Tight muscles around neck and shoulders. Our muscles surrounding our neck and shoulders are put under a lot of tension when we have poor posture and this can lead to a stiffness and tightness. Stiff neck and shoulder makes it even harder to hold our neck and head in a neural posture. 5. Weak core muscles. This affects our ability to hold ourselves up straight and increases that forward head posture. 6. Cervical spine dysfunction. A tight or restricted cervical spine will contribute to forward carriage. Its Important to stretch out our neck and shoulders daily and make sure we have time away from our devices. Daily exercises that focus on core control are also really important to help us sustain good posture in our daily routine. Tag someone who needs to this information or message any questions. 04.01.2022 What really causes neck arthritis? The normal wear and tear that really isnt normal at all. The thing is that when have neck degeneration/wear and tear/spinal decay/arthritis - it doesnt appear throughout the entire neck, only in certain joints. Arthritis generally will be seen in some, but not all the vertebrae (back bones) in the neck. So these bones are all ageing at the same rate, so it cant be age.... So age does not cause arthritis! Ful lstop! What age does do is that it adds time so the stressed joint keeps being loaded with undue strain and as a results, keeps wearing unevenly. Often people in our office will see me waving my shoe around to make a point. If you walk on the outside of your shoe alone, then over a couple of hours no change will occur to the outside of that shoe. Try walking like that for 2 months, 6 months and what will happen. There will be obvious wear on the outside of the shoe. The spine is the same. Only when there is an: -abnormal curve -abnormal sustained poor posture -an unresolved whiplash injury -joint stiffness The type of arthritis we are talking about is osteoarthritis. This is the abnormal wearing of joints due to changes in biomechanics and alignment. This applies for joints all over the body, knees, hips, shoulders and the spine. Whether there has been an injury to the neck, through a history of sports or motor vehicle accidents, or there are long standing postural changes in the neck the results are the same: 1.Joints not moving properly When joints are stuck and not moving then this creates compensations elsewhere. The lack of movement changes the way your brain perceives your neck and this can cause pain and stiffness in your neck. Can your turn your head 90 degrees to each side? Can you tilt your head to the side about 40 degrees? Are your movements even? Is there pain. Remember all your movements in your neck come from the joints moving properly. 2.Changes in normal or ideal neck curve and positioning Problems such as a loss of neck curve and changes in posture. Forward head posture (FHP), where your ear, instead of sitting over your shoulder, now sits in front - causing an increase strain and load to your neck. This posture can increase the stress on the lower neck by up to 4.25 times the normal forces. (1) A loss of normal forward neck curve will cause more loading to the lower neck. The side curves in the spine act as shock absorbers, so less curves means there is more shock absorbed by joints, discs, muscles etc. 1. http://cbpnonprofit.com//anterior-and-vertical-translatio/ Lisa, director www.errolstchiro.com.au

04.01.2022 Is your forward head carriage causing your neck pain? Do you suffer from neck pain? Noticed your posture is looking like the panda above?... What is forward head carriage? Forward head carriage is exactly what the name entails - head posture out of neutral posture to sit in front of the shoulders. It is usually due to a change in the neck alignment to move the head from its proper position. Its highly important to create good postural habits from an early age so that forward head carriage doesnt lead to long term health issues. We look better when we are sitting up straight and holding ourselves in perfect upright posture! If youre suffering from neck pain then please feel free to ask us questions and reach out. 03.01.2022 Our master controller is our brain and this blog is about making you aware of the 3 foods that our brain cells love. These 3 top foods we recommend for brain health twill help to keep you mentally alert and as sharp as ever. The 3 foods are foods that you are more than likely already incorporating into your diet, but make sure you include them on a regular basis. The 3 foods are:... 1. Omega 3 Fatty Acids. Fish is high in this, as our body doesnt make omega 3, as it does cholesterol so we need to eat foods that contain Omega 3. Currently it appears that 80% of the population are deficient in omega 3. Not good news if you are trying to make more brain cells. The Australian Heart Foundation recommends a daily intake of 500mg of marine-sourced omega 3s per day. Most people are lucky to get a fresh serve of fish once a week. Two to three serves of fish is required to get the recommended weekly does of omega 3. If you havent been eating the recommended amount of fish for a while, then you can get your omega 3 levels tested. One such test it is called Omega-3 Index test. Supplementation may be required to bring your levels up to an ideal level. Then maintaining with 2-3 pieces of fish a week should follow. What about vegetarians or vegans? How do they increase their omega 3 intake. Adding flaxseeds and walnuts and their oils to your diet will help. Chia seeds do contain some omega 3. You will need to consume very high amounts of these as compared to marine foods to your diet, as their levels are considerably lower than in oily fish. There are some algae based supplements that have recently come onto the market and contain hight levels of omega 3. We have them in our office. 2.Water. Its the most important building block for the brain. It makes up all the cells in the brain. When we havent consumed enough water we can feel foggy, have a decrease in mental clarity and perhaps experience headaches. Daily intake should be 2-3 litres and increasing with exercise, hot weather or coffee consumption. 3. Berries. Dark coloured berries contain an important antioxidant that helps consolidate memorys and more important as we age. Errol Street Chiro 9329 1118

01.01.2022 We see many people visiting our office every week complaining of arm pain. Tingling, numbness and weakness in the arms and even hands are some of the things that they mention. The pain and discomfort can start to effect sleep, exercise and sitting to watch your favourite TV show may mean lots of fidgeting. Symptoms from Nerve Pressure from the Neck -Pins and needles -Numbness... -Weakness in arm -Sharp shooting pains The nerves that normally run freely from the spine down the arms and hands can be compromised. The nerves do the following: -Innervate muscles so you can move your shoulders, elbows and wrists -Allow you to feel sensations on your skin, allowing you to respond to the environment, such as hot things etc Nerves can be irritated from the following: - Joints stuck in the neck. This can be helped by a chiropractor or osteopath to improve the function to the joints and reduce nerve interference down the arm. -Bulging discs can place pressure on the nerves -Advanced bony spurs from degeneration (osteoarthritis) can also place pressure on the nerves. -Changes in the neck curve that is normally a forward curve of 40 degrees. When severely reduced or reversed, this can cause nerve irritation and referred pain down the arm. -Posture changes (thoracic outlet syndrome). Rounded shoulders, combined with forward head carriage can place pressure on the nerves as they enter the arms, causing referral down the arms. -Space occupying lesions, such as cancer, infection, cysts etc All these reasons can irritate the nerve and cause referred pain down the arm. It is important not to ignore these problems and to investigate a nd find the cause. Who should you see for help? You can visit the following practitioners to help diagnose your cause of the referred pain: Chiropractor or osteopath. We are primary health care practitioners that are trained to diagnose the cause of these problems. Seeing your GP is also an option. Please tag someone who you know has referred arm pain. Feel free to contact us if you have a question. Lisa, Errol St Chiropractic

01.01.2022 Finally it’s the time of the year for a break and for a lot of people this year that means travel!! We all know that holidays mean a change in routine and this is often the case when it comes to bedtime- and we all know how important it is to get a good night sleep. So today we are going to give you the best tips to sleeping well while away on holidays. ... 1.Take your own pillow away with you. Sleeping on different pillows that aren’t supportive for your neck are a big contributing factor to waking up with a stiff & sore neck. If you can’t fit your regular pillow in on your travels it might be a good idea to invest in a good contoured travel pillow. 2. Try to keep a regular sleep routine. There will be late nights of course when your on holidays having fun but try to get your 7-8hrs sleep. Also try to switch off and avoid technology before bed- especially work emails when your meant to be having a Christmas break! 3. Move your body daily. Take a daily walk/run or do a 20 minute workout. And Drink plenty of water! Moving your body regularly and drinking plenty of water helps you sleep better and also wake up more refreshed.
