24.01.2022 CCAMLR has been involved as a member of the Global Partnership on Marine Litter (GPML), a United Nations Environment Programme Global Programme of Action (UNEP/GPA), since 2016. The GMPL was launched in 2012 and seeks to reduce levels and impacts of marine debris on a global scale by enhancing international cooperation and coordination through the promotion and implementation of the Honolulu Strategy a global framework for the prevention and management of marine debris. CC...AMLR maintains the CCAMLR Marine Debris Program, the longest-running marine debris survey database for the Antarctic region. Since 1989, CCAMLR Members have collected data on beach debris, entanglement of marine mammals and marine debris associated with seabird colonies, as well as recording rare events of animals observed contaminated with hydrocarbons. Further information on the CCAMLR marine debris program can be found on the website. CCAMLR engages with the GPML by contributing information on marine debris monitoring in the Southern Ocean when requested. The CCAMLR Secretariat participates in internationally hosted GPML webinars that aim to enhance collaboration and information sharing through the discussion of emerging research, and has also contributed to the UNEP global review Marine Plastic Debris and Microplastics: Global Lessons and Research to Inspire Action and Guide Policy Change which offers a global perspective on marine debris levels and initiatives in place to reduce marine debris. www.ccamlr.org/science/marine-debris

13.01.2022 Today marks the first World Albatross Day which was launched by the Agreement on the Conservation of Albatrosses and Petrels (ACAP) to highlight the conservation crisis affecting this legendary bird. Since the late 1990s’, seabird mortality arising from fishing operations has been reduced from thousands of birds annually to almost zero in fisheries regulated by CCAMLR. This has been achieved through the implementation of a combination of measures including seasonal closures,... night setting, the deployment of streamer lines, additional line weights to increase sink rates, prohibition on the discharge of offal during setting and hauling and the use of bird exclusion devices around the hauling point. We are grateful to have a dedicated World Albatross Day to honour these magnificent birds and highlight the ongoing conservation crisis they face. Photo: Volker Siegel (2012)
