24.01.2022 I was recently asked to make a cover for a half breed saddle. Having no pattern to go on I asked for a few measurements and a photo and this was the end result along with a matching bridle bag

13.01.2022 I keep forgetting to take photos of my work, so here is my latest creations. A custom cover for a mattes sheepskin girth, fully lined so the girth slides in easily and matching stirrup covers

08.01.2022 A great illustration of how a horse is knocked off balance by using the inside rein to turn/bend. The right is correct, as the horse is turning with both should...ers, the left horse has been knocked over his outside shoulder, and will fight for his balance beneath the rider by allowing his haunches to fall in. 06.01.2022 Do you have an off the track thoroughbred you are retraining or rehabbing? This report is for you. This was written by Maddison Creese who has been Manolo's wo...rking student for the last five years. Sascha: 10 years old, TB mare, ex-racehorse, broodmare who has had 2 foals, close to Kissing Spine The Sascha that we met for the first time four months ago is very different to the Sascha that resides in our paddock today. One of the first things I observed when Manolo initially worked with her in the arena, was that her body was profoundly disconnected. The front half of her body moved in a different rhythm to the rear half of her body. It was also clear that all four feet travelled on different arcs. Her body was constantly tensed and in flight mode, as if she was always anxiously waiting for a threat to inevitably arise. She would shy and spin quickly for seemingly no reason and she would often complain in the canter transition, particularly on the right rein; Manolo says this behaviour can be caused by the pinching of a nerve or kissing spine. As with all the horses, Manolo approached Sascha holistically with a Rehab program put into place. The first step of the Rehab training will always begin with an introduction to gentle and basic in-hand work and in Sascha’s case, balancing her feet through remedial trimming and treating her for ulcers with Kentucky Equine Research Equishure and Neighlox products. After the trim she was already moving considerably better and travelling straighter. Now, Manolo could begin to assist her to use her body with gentle in-hand work and lunging combined to build a healthy posture. He will combine the inhand with bodywork along the way. Manolo would ride her briefly after lunging her, and some days he would only ride her in walk. When working with a horse, Manolo encourages the stretching forward and downwards of the neck in a neutral balance, (that is where the eye is in line with the point of hip and the front of the face parallel with the shoulder blade, with the nose of course slightly in front of the vertical). This posture frees and lifts the back which consequently engages the core and allows for the hind feet to travel further underneath the body, offering the horse better balance through enabling them to move with their WHOLE BODY. Manolo is observing; if Sascha is travelling with even diagonals in the trot, and if the joints are bending evenly. He watches the muscles in the neck, the chest, the core muscles, the hindquarter, the footfalls, the bend and the horse’s expression. To simplify; Manolo is always searching for a sense of balance- harmony in motion. He also needs to cultivate Sascha’s trust and relaxation, and to do so he needed to make her feel safe. He achieved this by creating a predictable, comfortable and consistent routine so she quickly learned what would be asked of her each day and what to expect when she entered the arena. She began to trust that she would never be forced or pushed outside of her comfort zone. Manolo was careful to give her adequate breaks in walk throughout the work to prevent her from becoming tired or struggling to catch her breath. He would only ask for a more forward trot for short periods of time, then allow her to come back to her most comfortable trot. Straightness, suppleness, strength and flexibility have to be developed gently and gradually so as to prevent injury or discomfort. Attempting to push her hind feet further underneath her body by means of force will only create stress and stiffness. Training must be approached gymnastically; Manolo would only ask for a longer stride in the trot for a little at a time, and only when she has been given adequate time to warm up and stretch her body. After a few weeks, Sascha began to let her guard down. Each time she came into the arena she was more relaxed than the day before. With gentle work, massage, acupuncture and craniosacral treatments, Sascha’s worrying dissipated as did the tension she had been holding in her body. She no longer spooked and stressed, and for a short period of time she actually became lazy. She had been on such high alert for so long and now she could finally let go and rest. Stress and worry tires horses just the same as for people. During this time, Manolo continued to work with her gently and waited for her to accustom to her regenerated self. She would let him know when she had finished processing and was ready for an increase in work and progression in training. Her body was softening at the same time as her mind was softening. Within a couple of months of working with Manolo, Sascha was opening up. She began to unravel and reveal her true essence. She was alert and self-assured and started working with a greater willingness and enthusiasm. She engaged with us and showed a strength and willingness that had been hidden beneath anxiety before. Her body was developing synchronicity, strength, suppleness and straightness and a better connection through her back. As her back improved and she developed core strength, her hind end worked more efficiently and better coordinated with her front end. Now she has reached the stage where Manolo can start building upon the foundations of trust and relaxation. He can afford to ask more of her and progress further in the training without risk of causing a lapse in her confidence and willingness. Sascha is now very confident in her work and her contentment is discernible by the spring in her step, the softness of her eye, the smoothness of her coat and the soft, plump muscles that ripple as she travels across the arena. Manolo is restoring purity to her gaits, rebalancing her body and revealing her true essence through Training for Wellness."
