25.01.2022 After much consideration, and after consultation with the event committee, we have made the difficult decision to cancel the Ceduna Relay For Life for 2021 and ...put a pause on any future Relay events in the Ceduna community. This decision was not an easy one to make and has not been taken lightly, however we feel it’s the right one for the event and the community, given the current economic environment and challenges we all face. We appreciate that Relay For Life is so important to you and all those past and present participants in the community. You have made your footprint in Relay and we are so grateful for the incredible support and enthusiasm we have received from you over the years. We’d like to thank the committee for everything they have done, from planning the event to donating their time and expertise. They really are the driving force for this event and we are so grateful for their passion and determination to support people in the community impacted by cancer. Thanks to the support and funds raised from the amazing community, Cancer Council SA can continue to provide a range of support services to all South Australians impacted by cancer. 22.01.2022 Meet Karen, who is part of the team Fluro Family Fusion, is one Relayer that has dedicated her challenge to someone very special, her mum After surviving colon cancer in 1985, Karen's mum, then aged 81, was hit with another diagnosis-ovarian and liver cancer. Karen's mum knew that there was a Relay For Life in Mount Barker in November 2015 and wanted to raise money that would go towards supporting others just like her. And so, she set herself a goal to enter a team and be fit... enough to walk some laps of the oval. "I had to take her to the oval to practice, gradually building up her strength and walking further each time." Unfortunately, this was the only Relay Karen's Mum was able to attend, after being told in February 2016 that the liver cancer had returned, and further surgery was not advised. Karen's mum passed away in January 2017. Choosing to celebrate, remember and fight back in memory of their mum, Karen's brother and his family joined her Relay team in 2017. Although Karen and her team can't attend a traditional Relay this year due to COVID-19, that hasn't stopped them from honouring their tradition in memory of their mum. "For 2020 Relay For Life, Peter and I decided to get involved with the Relay Your Way 28km Challenge and are challenging ourselves to complete 28km every week. They offer practical and emotional support to families and people impacted and provide information on your cancer diagnosis, how to reduce your risk of cancer, questions about early detection and treatments and their side effects.... 13.01.2022 During this time the Relay team are working together to collaborate ideas on how we can still celebrate, remember and fight back for events that may be postponed or changed due to COVID-19. You play a vital role in bringing us closer to a cancer free future, as you make it possible for communities to come together and raise vital funds for cancer research, support and prevention. If you and your team would like to continue fundraising but need a bit inspo, we've got you cover...ed with some tips for staying indoors! 1. Host a quiz night - round up your friends via programs such as Zoom and Skype and ask for donations. Encourage your friends to dress up, theme your event and settle in for a night of friendly competition and fun. 2. Are you creative or artistic? You could use your spare time on weekends to paint, make bouquets of flowers or candles and sell them online. 3. Host an online auction - ask local businesses, friends, family and other networks to donate new/unused items. Invite people to bid on their favourite items. 13.01.2022 Meet Sherrilyn and her team Wendy's, Witches and Warlocks from Gawler Relay For Life. The team was formed by Sherrilyn’s friend, Wendy, who was diagnosed with cancer. Wendy sadly passed away in October 2002. Sherrilyn and her team wanted to keep Wendy’s promise of continuing to Relay For Life and that’s just what they have done.... We do it for her and other members, like my mum, we have lost since." Although it is difficult to physically join together, the team have found a way to stay connected and continue fundraising for the cause that means so much to them. On this years Relay weekend, we linked up via video in messenger to do an opening lap and service together it was a lot of fun! Sherrilyn plans to organise more fundraising events throughout the year including an online auction and bingo bags. "We made a promise to our friend and that is important to us. We have all been affected by cancer in some form. It doesn't discriminate or stop because of a pandemic. Support is still needed, and we are still able to help. 05.01.2022 Meet Mickey and her team Juicy Jellies! Mickey first got involved with Riverland Relay For Life and the team Juicy Jellies after some close friends were diagnosed with cancer. Now, 15 years on, she is just as passionate and dedicated about Relay and the difference it makes. "I thought it would be a great way to raise some funds for a great cause. Our whole team really enjoyed it, so we went back the next year. "The team and I were excited about the new Relay Your Way 28km of ...how different it is. Sometimes change is good and the team all just embraced the new idea!" The team have been coming up with new ways to fundraise during these challenging times including hosting a barbeque, selling Relay For Life merchandise and organising a bingo night in September. "My team realise we still need to fundraise and have been trying to think outside the box because of COVID-19. "Recently we started to place a toilet we decorated purple in the front yards of Riverland residents. To have it moved is simple-we just ask they make a $20 donation. 03.01.2022 BREAKING NEWS: The State Government will commit $10 million to fund our new $30 million integrated cancer building on Greenhill Road. The purpose-built facility will be the home for Cancer Council SA’s research, support and prevention programs and will include 120 rooms of supportive accommodation for regional and remote South Australians travelling to Adelaide for cancer treatment. 01.01.2022 Congratulations to the all our Riverland Relayers for completing their 28km Challenge. Together, you have raised over $28,000 for people in South Australia impacted by cancer! Thank you to all who were able attend to celebrate, remember and fight back at our Candlelight Ceremony on Saturday, 24 October.... It was a moving service and although it looked a little differently this year, it was still just as special and meaningful as always. 2020 has been a difficult year, but your support and passion to Cancer Council SA has been incredible - you're all amazing!
