25.01.2022 Thrilled to see the Alfred CCSVI study in patients Multiple Sclerosis being presented at this year’s CIRSE 2020 Summit (Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe). Unfortunately we can’t access the full presentation but you can learn more about the Summit at www.cirse.org/events/cirse-2020 Kerri

23.01.2022 An important reminder to keep your veins as healthy as possible. Jennifer

23.01.2022 Once again our friends and supporters Chris and Nigel Hall hosted a fundraising dinner for our research at the Alfred Hospital. A total of $1620 was raised from... the evening. 27 of us cooked seven different dishes all with a Middle Eastern theme. There was much fun and laughter along with the eating. This is a fabulous way of raising funds and connecting with friends. If you need any details on how to do this please contact us.

21.01.2022 A new paper from Australian researchers looking at venous narrowing in the brain of people with MS. Highlights: Multiple sclerosis is associated with narrowing of the transverse sinuses of the venous outflow.... The findings indicate multiple sclerosis is on a continuum with idiopathic intracranial hypertension. Elevated venous pressure induces neuro-inflammation and blood brain barrier breakdown. Dilatation of the sagittal sinus cross-sectional area indicates a reduction in the pressure gradient across the sinus wall and is a point of distinction between multiple sclerosis and idiopathic intracranial hypertension. https://www.msard-journal.com//S2211-0348(20)3059/fulltext Kerri

15.01.2022 From Joan at The Vascular Connection to Multiple Sclerosis page: CCSVI studies continue in China and are published in Frontiers in Neurology- thanks to partnerships with Dr. Mark Haacke, Dr. Paolo Zamboni and the ISNVD. 128 patients were diagnosed w/ CCSVI using ultrasound and MRV technology, and were then treated according to their individual issues. There are a variety of presentations of CCSVI--as unique as the individual. "In this study, the decreased diameter and the ...increased flow velocity at the stenosis segment showed the significantly disturbed jugular venous outflow in patients with CCSVI (33). The abnormal collateral vessels, the reduced cerebral perfusion, and the chronic clinical symptoms could be relieved after the correction of CCSVI, which further indicated the significance of IJV drainage." https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7538781/

14.01.2022 From Peter Sullivan: An update by Professor Ken Thomson and Dr Helen Kavnoudias on research learning's from the internationally acclaimed long term CCSVI clinical trial at the Alfred Hospital (Melbourne) is being presented during the 2020 annual Scientific Meeting of the Cardiovascular and Interventional Radiological Society of Europe (CIRSE) from 12-15 September 2020 - For more info see http://www.msnetwork.org/advocacy/questions.htm#cardio

11.01.2022 The CCSVI Australia team met with Helen Kavnoudias today (via Zoom). We thought you’d like to know that The Alfred continue to be committed to researching the Vascular connection in MS and have added several new elements including analysis of the perivascular space, pressures and toxic clearance. An abstract has been submitted for this year’s CIRSE - you can read more below. Kerri

11.01.2022 For the second year running (excuse the pun), Kevin Robinson will be competing in the"Tough Mudder". He and his team will be running the 16 km and crushing the 22 obstacles filled with ice water, mud (surprisingly!) And electric shocks (hopefully not in the ice water). All this in order to raise funds for the Alfred Hospital trial. Please donate, thank you.... https://toughmudder-melbourne-19.everydayhero.com/au/kevin See more

11.01.2022 CONCLUSION: Expanded analysis of the Brave Dreams data that included secondary/progressive MS patients in addition to the relapsing/remitting patients analyzed previously showed that venoplasty decreases new cerebral lesions at 1 year. Secondary analysis confirmed the efficacy of the Giaquinta grading system in selecting patients appropriate for venoplasty who were more likely to be free from accumulation of new cerebral lesions at MRI.

06.01.2022 A new gut-brain link uncovered: Immunoglobulin A (IgA) cells are created in the lining of the gut by blood cells. They then travel to the brain, reducing infla...mmation. People w/MS appear to have lower levels of these cells in their feces. MS researchers will be studying ways to increase these powerful anti-inflammatory IgA cells, but here are some already studied and published means to increase your own IgA levels today: 1. Increase foods with Vitamin A- (carrots, spinach, liver, cod liver oil) 2. Zinc- (can be raised w/supplementation--as well as seafood, poultry, cashews) 3. Vitamin E- (dark leafy greens, eggs, nuts, avocado, sweet potato) 4. Lycopene (red and pink fruits and veggies like tomatoes, pink grapefruit, watermelon) 5. Try a gluten free diet. Gluten can bind to IgA cells, and limit their ability to travel to the brain. Eat real food, mostly colorful fruits and veggies. Stay away from processed/man made foods, transfats, high sugar foods--which all increase inflammatory cells. The gut-brain connection is real, and we are what we eat.
