25.01.2022 Getting close to 2 years since this. Wonderful project

23.01.2022 Today we remember Lance Corporal Walter Peeler. On 4 October 1917 Peeler was one of several Lewis gunners attached to the 37th Battalion for the attack on Brood...seinde Ridge. Walter led a series of attacks against enemy posts, destroying four machine gun posts and killing 30 of the enemy. For these actions he was awarded a Victoria Cross. Peeler also served in the Second World War, understating his age by 14 years and enlisted in the 2/2nd Pioneer Battalion. After serving in Syria, he was captured with his unit in Java during 1942 and spent three and a half years as a prisoner of the Japanese. On 6 October 1945, at the age of 58, Peeler embarked for Australia aboard MV Highland Brigade and returned home to Australia. Upon his return, Peeler was informed his son Donald had been killed in action on 31 December 1944, on the island of Bougainville, while serving with the 15th Battalion. During his service Peeler was awarded the Victoria Cross, British Empire Medal, service medals for the First and Second World Wars, and coronation medals for King George VI and Queen Elizabeth II. This video contains footage of Walter, playing with Ferne Pope, aboard MV Highland Brigade. 18.01.2022 Kevin "Dasher" Wheatley was born in Sydney, and had several jobs before joining the Australian Regular Army in 1956. He served in different battalions of the Ro...yal Australian Regiment, including time in Malaya, before being posted to Vietnam in 1965. A short and stocky man, he had become known as "Dasher" for his rugby skills. On 13 November 1965 Wheatley and Warrant Officer Ronald Swanton, were operating in the Tra Bong valley. Their platoon came under heavy fire and Swanton was shot. Although he knew his mate was dying, Wheatley refused to leave him. Again urged to withdraw, Wheatley would not. Instead, he pulled the pins from two grenades and waited for the enemy. Two explosions were heard, followed by bursts of fire; both men were killed. Wheatley's refusal to leave a mate was seen to be in the highest traditions of gallantry. His body was returned to Australia for burial. Wheatley was awarded the Victoria Cross, the General Service Medal (for Malaya), service medals for the Vietnam War, the United States Silver Star, and South Vietnamese awards. This evening at 4.55pm, on 13 November 2020, the Last Post Ceremony will commemorate Warrant Officer Kevin Arthur Wheatley VC and his service in the Vietnam War. 15.01.2022 #OTD Sergeant Lewis McGee, VC On the 4th of October 1917, Sergeant Lewis McGee performed a series of heroic actions that would see him awarded Australia’s hi...ghest award for bravery, the Victoria Cross, whilst fighting during the Battle of Passchendaele. As part of the third phase of the Passchendaele offensive, the 10th Australian Brigadeof which McGee's 40th Battalion was partwas detailed to execute an attack on Broodseinde Ridge. The advance commenced at the predetermined time of 06:00 on 4 October 1917, under the cover of an artillery barrage. The first three battalions were able to seize their objectives, though the fighting intensified with each stage. As the 40th Battalion set to advance towards the final objective, its progress became hampered by increasingly heavy machine-gun and rifle fire, as well as by barbed wire entanglements and sectors of impassable swamp. With McGee's B Company heading the 40th Battalion's advance, the unit was able to progress to a point approximately 270 metres (300 yd) in front of the crest, where it was confronted by a thick line of barbed wire and another bog, while simultaneously subjected to the fire of ten machine guns in trenches and heavily defended pillboxes. The men of B Company struggled to within 90 metres (98 yd) of the battalion's objective until they were pinned by German machine guns. McGee's platoon was suffering heavy casualties from a particular machine gun 50 metres (55 yd) in front of his position, which was set in a recess atop a concrete pillbox and firing directly at his men. Armed solely with a revolver, McGee dashed alone towards the post across the fire-swept ground. Shooting the gunners, he captured the remaining soldiers in the garrison as prisoners and seized control of the pillbox. On returning to his unit, he reorganised his men and led a bombing party in the capture of a second machine-gun post. McGee's actions reignited the 40th Battalion's advance, with McGee himself "foremost in the remainder" of the action. By 09:12 on 5 October, the 40th Battalion had seized its objective and held complete control of the Broodseinde Ridge, having captured 300 Germans as prisoners in the process. As a result of his actions at Broodseinde, McGee was awarded the Victoria Cross, one of two Australians to be so decorated that day. Unfortunately, he never saw the announcement of the award. On 12 October 1917eight days after his Victoria Cross actionMcGee was killed whilst running towards a pillbox which was holding up the unit’s advance. A bullet struck him in the head, killing him instantly. Lest we forget. --------------------------------------------------------------- If you spot an error, please send me a message. 08.01.2022 All 18 nations at the Invictus Games were this morning given a quilt made by the RSL Women’s Auxiliary and New Zealand’s is absolutely magnificent. State Pr...esident Pauline James said she asked members to make 25 quilts but they were so enthusiastic she got 70. All are on an indigenous background, and all have a message on the back saying thank you for your courage. The New Zealand quilt is absolutely unique the Silver Fern on indigenous fabric. It’s absolutely magnificent. Out of all them it really stands out, Mrs James said. A quilt is made for comfort, it is made for warmth and when people are making it, stitching it, it brings people together just as the Invictus Games does. #IAMKiwi #IG2018
