This figure is even higher for Indigenous children and those from other at risk groups. 12.01.2022 NAIDOC Week celebrations are being held across Australia to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of the world’s oldest continuing culture on the planet and to recognise that sovereignty was never ceded. NAIDOC is not only celebrated in Indigenous communities but by Australians from all walks of life. This week is a great opportunity to participate in a range of activities to support your local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community. This year’s theme is ‘A...lways Was, Always Will be.’ Commissioner, Helen Connolly met local Aboriginal children from the Davenport Community near Port Augusta on her 'Listening Tour'. Helen often hears from SA’s Indigenous children and young people, who tell her they would like their culture and heritage to be more widely recognised and accepted by government, with Indigenous language taught in our schools. #NAIDOC2020 #NAIDOCWeek #NAIDOC

11.01.2022 The Commissioner has just released a survey on the discrimination of LGBTIQ young people. The Attorney-General's Department is reviewing Section 50(c) of the Equal Opportunity Act 1984 which allows 'bodies established for religious purposes' to discriminate on the basis of sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, or intersex status if the discrimination conforms with the principles of the religion. We have created this survey to find out what young people have experienc...ed or think about the discrimination young LGBTIQ people face in religious schools. Through this survey, we are hoping to find out more about what you think religious schools can do better to educate and support sexually and gender diverse young people. It's completely anonymous, takes 2 minutes and there are no right or wrong answers. https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/discrimination-LGBTIQ-youngp

07.01.2022 Today (20 November) marks the anniversary of when the UN General Assembly adopted the International Convention on the Rights of the Child (1989). The costs of the COVID-19 pandemic on children are immediate and if left unaddressed may last a lifetime. This year the UN has called for all generations to come together to reimagine the type of world we want to create. South Australian children told the Commissioner they want a world where no-one is left behind and where everyo...ne is treated equally - where they feel safe, loved, secure and respected and where their hopes and dreams can be realised. My biggest hope is that instead of returning to our old normal after COVID-19, we use it to redefine normal to implement comprehensive, effective climate policy, increase financial support for the disadvantaged and make politics driven by empathy rather than apathy. 05.01.2022 We have spent the last couple of months asking young people about gender stereotypes, the realities they face today and how best to challenge them. We have met with girls breaking down barriers created by stereotypes and exclusion and we have heard that stereotypes are still very much present with COVID-19 reinforcing gender based inequality. The International Day of the Girl Child focuses our attention on the need to address the challenges girls face and to promote girls’ ...empowerment and the fulfilment of their human rights. This year the theme, My Voice, Our Equal Future, is an opportunity to be inspired by what adolescent girls see as the change they want, and the solutions - big and small - they are leading across South Australia. We’ll release our Gender report in 2021 but in the meantime join us in celebrating the contributions of young women on this International Day of the Girl!
