25.01.2022 GOOD NEWS! Cabra is set to defy gravity in 2021 with our swankified production of ‘Wicked: The Untold Story of the Witches of Oz’. Elphaba (Bella G) and Glinda (Annabel W) are already in rehearsal mode and, along with their castmates, cannot wait to storm the Hopgood Theatre stage on 27-28 May. 25.01.2022 This Anzac Day, we remember Eileen Callaghan, who attended Cabra in the 1930s. As a nurse during World War II, she was a prisoner of war for nearly four years. Although she returned to Adelaide, she suffered ill health for the rest of her life. The Southern Cross newspaper reported on her passing in 1954. Life for her as a prisoner of war was but an endurance, but she determined to make it as normal as possible. Always mistress of herself, she retained her sense of proporti...on. To her, life was precious, and her aim was to return to her family and friends in Australia. The personification of unconquerable faith and hope and courage, and complete trust in God, she gave an example of these virtues to her companions, and shared her strength with them. Deprived of contact with, and news of her family in Australia, and with little and unreliable information as to the progress of the war, she refused to despair or accept defeat, and in this manner, inspired others in their dark and desperate hours. 25.01.2022 A message from Dr Helen Riekie: Further to the Premier’s announcement earlier today, Cabra Dominican College will be closed for a 6-day period from midnight. Please check your email for updates throughout the day. Thank you for continued support.

24.01.2022 We are very pleased to announce that from having submitted entries for the Australian Catholics Young Journalist Award 2020, Intermediate Print Section, a number of our Year 7 students have been very successful. Pictured with Mrs Dorian, Leader of Learning: English, are Jack, who is the winner of this national award and Angela, who is the runner-up. Not only have these two Cabra students gained such fantastic results but the other students pictured also received awards, were ...highly commended or received an honourable mention. All of our students were entered into the intermediate division of this national competition, which meant that they were also competing against Year 8 students; such an outstanding achievement for our Year 7 applicants and their teachers. Both Jack and Angelas articles will be published in the Spring 2020 issue of Australian Catholics magazine and/or on the Australian Catholics website. On behalf of our Cabra Dominican community, we congratulate all of these students and their English/Religious Education teachers for the high standard of work that was submitted; we are very proud of this accolade.

24.01.2022 Hello to our old scholars! Although we are holding off on organising reunions for now, we invite you to visit our website to see the reports from all the reunions that took place at the end of 2019. You could also read the latest edition of our biannual college magazine, The Good, the Beautiful and the True. Send us an email, so we can keep in touch. We are planning some big things to celebrate 135 years of Cabra in 2021! https://www.cabra.catholic.edu.au/discover/old-scholars/

24.01.2022 https://cabrasleepout2020.gofundraise.com.au The Winter Sleepout has been a fantastic event on our Calendar the last few years. Despite the fact we've had to cancel the one held at school this year, a number of selfless and brave students are "sleeping out at home" tonight to experience the same cold and hunger a person experiencing homelessness feels. If you'd like to acknowledge them and support Vinnies' amazing work, you can donate at the link!

22.01.2022 We are so proud of Grace and her small business, Grace's handmade cards

22.01.2022 There is nothing else quite like our St Dominics Day Talent Show! The faces in the audience show the joy our most beloved event brings. To our amazing students who were part of the show, thank you for sharing your gifts, and providing us with the opportunity to smile, laugh, and generally be in awe of your talents. These memories will last a lifetime! #catholicschoolsopenweek

22.01.2022 Today we wore beanies for Vinnies! We responded to this call to action from our student leaders: Across our country, over 116,000 people experience homelessness, with some people being unable to protect themselves from the unforgiving winter that most of us know total shelter from. While hard to accept, members of our own community are included in those experiencing homelessness and disadvantage. As Dominicans, we are called to respond to the needs of our times. So, to support the Vinnies Winter Appeal, we invited all members of the Cabra community to wear a beanie to school today, and bring a gold coin donation. As a collective, wearing beanies is an act of solidarity and mindfulness, to remind us all that there are people in our community doing it tough, and show that we are with them. Vinnies SA

22.01.2022 We finished up Wellbeing Week today with a lunchtime picnic with lawn games, music and a visit from Labs 'n Life; patting these beautiful dogs made us all smile. This weekend take some advice from our students and find opportunities for self-care, rest, mindfulness, and to learn, exercise and connect.

20.01.2022 At our Academic Awards Assembly last week, we acknowledged and celebrated the students who have excelled in their learning and those who have demonstrated consistent effort across all their subjects. Whilst academic excellence is a goal we should aim for, we recognise that excellence is different for every student. So, we also celebrate students who persist and demonstrate academic endeavour across their learning. Whilst a student may not qualify for academic excellence, in... an ideal world every student should be able to achieve academic endeavour by demonstrating persistence and grit. Guest speaker Natassia Messent, 17, shared her journey at Cabra and her experience post school. It was refreshing to hear a young adult who has graduated from our school not only share her vulnerabilities but make it clear that we are ultimately in control of the choices we make and the outcomes we achieve. Do you recognise anyone from the Class of '94 in this photo? We also have some of our Class of 2020 pictured alongside them. Recently, we emailed parents, students, staff, and those old scholars whose details we have and invited them to complete a survey which will inform our new strategic plan. We very much value all views, and encourage everyone to complete this survey! If you complete the attached form, we will then share the link to the survey with you to give you an opportunity to have your voice heard.

20.01.2022 We were thrilled to be able to host the 2020 Gala Evening Performance in St Dominic's Hall last night. Spread across six concerts, 19 of our ensembles performed for their families for the first time this year. The students gave a fantastic performance and have a lot to be proud of. Well done to all involved!

19.01.2022 It was a beautiful day for gardening yesterday! Some of our Year 7 and 10 students were able to take full advantage of the lovely weather, joining forces with our grounds and maintenance staff to plant out garden beds around our new gym. The students have been looking at the environmental benefits of tree planting and how it can mitigate the effects of climate change. The whole team did a great job and the area is now looking even more beautiful.

19.01.2022 Tomorrow marks the 135th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of our beautiful convent. Archbishop Reynolds blessed the stone under a tent on 16 March 1885, with a crowd in attendance that included the architects, Messrs Reed and Wright. The following January, Monsignor Byrne and builder John Leahy posed for a photo with the completed building. Not featured in the historic photos is Mother Mary Columba Boylan, pictured here at a later date. Mother Columba was sent from Ireland to assist the fledgling community of Holy Cross Dominican Sisters, and to oversee the building and creation of Cabra Dominican Convent. She led the school with great success for many years and is commemorated in the name of one of our four Houses.

18.01.2022 Please note that any new alerts will be available at the Catholic Education South Australia link below.

18.01.2022 A fun week of learning at Cabra! Experiments in and out of the lab, origami and hiragana, physical challenges and Maths games. We were also very pleased to welcome our old scholar tutors back to the library.

18.01.2022 Every year, we place crosses at our front and back entrances to honour the season of Lent. This year, from the time in February when the crosses went up, to Easter this weekend, the entire world has navigated unimaginable upheaval. We have had to modify, reimagine, sacrifice, support and seek support. Our Cabra community has responded beautifully. We wish you all a happy and holy Easter season.

17.01.2022 Champions! Congratulations to our soccer team who today won the Statewide Schools Open Girls Pool B competition after defeating Nuriootpa High School 5-1 in the grand final. Well done to the girls and to coach Theo too! School Sport SA #schoolsportsa #statewideschools #football #soccer #opengirls #grandfinal

17.01.2022 Our old scholars know that one of the most important days in the Cabra calendar is St Dominics Day. Although we were sad to be without Dominican Sisters and other special guests with whom we usually share this occasion, we were so very pleased to be able to celebrate together on Friday with a most beautiful mass in our new, magnificent, Caleruega Hall. (The talent quest came next, but we will save those photos for the next post.) Happy St Dominics Day to all in the Cabra community! #catholicschoolsopenweek

17.01.2022 Term 2 has begun and we have been absolutely delighted with attendance at school and through our remote learning program. Families, students and staff have worked together to create a rich learning environment, no matter the location. It was also lovely to see many of our students looking particularly smart wearing the new winter uniform. There have been plenty of smiles in class and lots of creative ways of learning at home but its not the same. We are excited to return to face-to-face teaching next week, including practical lessons.

16.01.2022 Last week, students from some of our Year 9 classes made cards to thank our hard working medical professionals. We were so pleased to receive some photos of staff at the Royal Adelaide Hospital with our cards. It's a small act but we hope it helps the students to connect with the amazing work going on in our hospitals. We salute all health workers and keep them all in our prayers during this very difficult time. It's nice to see them smiling!

16.01.2022 At the going down of the sun, and in the morning, we will remember them. Lest we forget. This morning at 11am we held a short service for Remembrance Day in St Brigid's Square. We thank Mr John Simpson for his beautiful piping.

16.01.2022 Our Year 10 Boys Knockout Basketball team sunk a last-second basket to make it through to the final. Well done Ben and team! Congratulations also to our Year 10 Girls Knockout Basketball team who also made it through to the finals.

15.01.2022 The sun shone today and there was plenty of outdoor learning happening at Cabra. Year 9s were juggling for The Rite Journey in St Brigids Square, non-contact Year 10 PE was on the oval, and our beautiful Café Crumbs has moved to takeaway only. We need our coffee, so we are very grateful for this continued service! Indoors, we worked with plenty of space between us on some fun projects like a sock puppet show, which the Year 7s created, filmed and edited in their small groups.

15.01.2022 Last Wednesday night, our Year 12s were accompanied by their families as they celebrated Mass for the last time as Cabra students. Then, on Thursday, Year 12s had their last day of classes which concluded with a whole school assembly. Following Cabra tradition, the drum corps heralded the arrival of the graduates, then senior drum corps members passed on their drums to younger students. House Leaders ceremonially handed over items to Year 7s, showing the strong links across t...he school. College Captains Brittany and Ezequiel spoke of their gratitude for what their cohort has been able to do in this unusual year, and the assembly ended with a rousing rendition of our school song, The Good, the Beautiful and the True. We sincerely congratulate every member of the Class of 2020, and could not be prouder of the way they have carried themselves throughout this year, their leadership for our younger year levels, and the legacy they have left. We particularly congratulate students who received significant awards, including Grace Tibalt, who is the 2020 recipient of the Dominican Sisters’ Award, presented by Sr Bernadette Kiley OP. 15.01.2022 We're delighted to share the news that Dr Catherine O'Halloran, our Leader of Learning: Science, has been awarded the Credit Union SA/SASTA Outstanding Contribution to the Teaching of Science Award! Congratulations, Dr O'Halloran, on a richly-deserved award.

14.01.2022 Congratulations to Year 11 student Keeley Kustermann for making the SANFL Women's Football Team of the Year, being named on the half-back flank. An outstanding achievement at such a young age! 14.01.2022 With great pleasure we announce the 2021 College Captains, Charlotte Combes and Zacharia Pearce, and Vice Captains, Isabella Guthleben and Felix Jolly. Our Principal, Dr Helen Riekie, and 2020 College Captain, Brittany Ayliffe, were delighted to meet with the new leaders this morning on the Convent lawn. We congratulate them on behalf of the entire Cabra community.

14.01.2022 This week is Catholic Education Week, and with it Catholic Education South Australia are launching their new positioning statement, Raising Hearts and Minds. As staff here at Cabra, we know that this is what we are called to do everyday! We care deeply for our young people, and we work hard to know and nurture the whole person. This week, we are remembering just how special it is to work and be educated in the Catholic and Dominican tradition; a tradition that values each of us completely and challenges us to be moved in Spirit to make our world a place that God desires. Happy Catholic Education Week. #RaisingHeartsAndMinds #CatholicEdWeek

13.01.2022 I am very proud to present these first photos of our wonderful new Food Technology facility, just completed. The facility encompasses a second student kitchen area, plus a pantry, cool room, wet area and staff workroom. Over the next week, we will slowly move in and students will begin to enjoy this area very soon. Located on the ground floor of our historic Convent building, it is in the area we refer to as the Refectory, where our Dominican Sisters fed the boarders for ov...er 100 years. The western wall had to be extensively refurbished, and what had been a door for many years returned to its original state, a window. (Staff member and old scholar/boarder, Tanya Sharkey tells us that this is the door through which the Sisters would deliver the students their dinner). We recognise the work of our previous Business Manager, Paul Angley, who worked extensively on this project, and of Karl Barber who saw it through to completion. As a community, we thank Russell and Yelland Architects and Kennett Builders for their outstanding work. Dr Helen Riekie, Principal See more

13.01.2022 Last Friday a group of our students and staff attended the International Womens Day Breakfast, hosted by Senator Penny Wong at the Adelaide Convention Centre. Sr Maureen OConnell of the Holy Cross Dominican Sisters also joined the group. One of the students had this to say about the experience of listening to the extraordinary women who were guest speakers. The stories of their journey and experiences about hardship, inequality, fighting for change, and determination to make a difference really inspired us and made us think about what we can do within our local and school community. We are the change."

13.01.2022 We are so grateful that last week we were able to give our Year 12 students the retreat experience that they missed out on earlier in the year. How precious that they have had the time away from the hustle and bustle of life to experience the profound moments of sharing and fellowship that occur on these retreats. The overwhelming response from the cohort is that they so valued this time away together to reflect upon life, themselves, their spirituality, and their relationships.

12.01.2022 Weve been right here in Cumberland Park since 1886, but this is our first Principals Welcome video we hope you like it!

12.01.2022 Were incredibly proud of old scholar Christian (Class of 2017), who featured on last nights news! A fantastic story!

11.01.2022 Deep Blue: Innovations for the future of our oceans was the theme for Science Week, and our students and staff were excited to dive right in! We began the week with a staff morning tea with ocean themed cupcakes, and periodic table biscuits can you see what they spell? Science is linked with all subject areas and this was highlighted in a poster display. In our Pastoral Care lesson, students learnt about the damage that plastics are doing to our ocean, and each home clas...s contributed to a display of a whale breaching, showing that the bottom half was made of our plastic rubbish. This, along with posters and pledges to do better, highlighted what we can all do to save our important oceans. Many students also participated in Showcase Lessons where Year 11 students ran demonstration lessons for students in Years 7 and 8. This was a wonderful opportunity for students to share their passion for Science with their younger peers. See more

11.01.2022 While we cannot yet gather as a whole School or House as we usually would for liturgical celebrations, students and staff have continued to gather and reflect within their Home Classes. This week, all Home Classes celebrated a class liturgy on the theme of Choosing Hope. The students themselves prepared and led the event, even writing and sharing some stunning personal reflections on this theme. Teachers reported that the students appreciated experiencing liturgy in this smaller group size, and that they enjoyed tailoring the reflective experience to their class.

10.01.2022 Thank you to Mr Whinnen for another awesome Sports Day. Spirit Cup to Murphy and Sports Day Cup to the mighty blues, Boylan!

09.01.2022 We are so happy that sport is back! It was wonderful to have courts, ovals and gym all filled with our students playing soccer, basketball and netball on Saturday morning. We look forward to a fun and competitive season.

09.01.2022 Some amazing talent was on display at two recent Cabra events. Our 2020 Senior Music class has not had many performance opportunities this year, so were thrilled to be on stage at the Senior Music Evening. Their families and teachers were equally thrilled to see them play live! The Atrium was abuzz with ideas and enthusiasm when Year 7 and 10 students presented their Climate Ready Schools initiatives. A more sustainable and energy-efficient Cabra is the goal, and we think these students can make it happen.

06.01.2022 Weve been cooking up some amazing creations at Cabra lately! Year 12 Food and Hospitality students produced some show-stopping desserts for which they had to learn a variety of techniques including tempering chocolate, piping skills and isomalt shaping. Yesterday, staff and students alike enjoyed house-made bagels with smashed avocado and feta, served with fresh barista coffee, all from the Breakfast Club, hosted by Ms Rossis Year 12 Food Studies class. And just this morning, Mr Zandonas Year 8 Italian class had a lot of fun making some delicious bruschetta. Yummmmm

05.01.2022 This week we are celebrating Wellbeing Week with a number of feel-good initiatives. So far weve had a comfy Trackies Tuesday, some yummy cupcakes and biscuits made by Ms Rossis Rite Journey class, which raised money for mental health charities, mindfulness colouring-in and volleyball every lunchtime on the small oval. The Wellbeing Area, the Atrium and Student Services are all decorated, lifting our spirits every time we walk by. Theres much more to come too!

05.01.2022 Our Year 12 Integrated Learning - Volunteer Work class are seeking donations for the Adelaide Day Centre of blankets, sleeping bags and warm men's jackets. Families are welcome to bring them to Front Reception.

04.01.2022 From our 1886 heritage-listed convent to the brand new Caleruega Hall, there's a whole lot more to our campus than the gates on Cross Road! We are proud to present our beautiful school in this new flythrough video. To find out more about Cabra, head to our website: https://www.cabra.catholic.edu.au

03.01.2022 The Class of 2020 received their Senior jackets yesterday

03.01.2022 Friday was World Teachers' Day and we rewarded our wonderful staff with some ice cream! Thank you for all that you do for our students!

03.01.2022 Languages Week was full of fun activities for the students to enjoy. The Atrium was immersed in an atmosphere of colour and international flags and was a fitting venue for the daily lunchtime activities such as different multicultural competitions, Italian games like Tombola and Scopa, miniature Leonardo Da Vinci Stem bridge building projects, Japanese Calligraphy and Bocce on the small oval. The language classes enjoyed making Onigiri Rice Balls and Origami, drawing Manga, cooking Spaghetti alla Carbonara and Bruschetta, and an excursion to the Central Market and Pizza and Mozzarella Bar. It was a very fun and vibrant week!

01.01.2022 It's been a term we will never forget, and we've finished it with plenty of smiles from students, staff and visiting old scholars. We wish the Cabra community a wonderful holiday break!

01.01.2022 Our Principal, Dr Helen Riekie, is very pleased to announce the following appointments for 2021: Deputy Principal: Learning and Teaching - Mrs Sally Ivens Deputy Principal: Student Wellbeing and Leadership - Mr Jason Thur Sally and Jason are both well-known to the Cabra community through their current leadership roles. Together with the Executive Leadership Team, they will continue to work in partnership with families to provide an excellent Catholic education in the Dominican tradition for the young people at Cabra.

01.01.2022 They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old; Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. (Photo from 2019)
