12.01.2022 EDUCATION SECTOR AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL CURRICULUM South Australian teachers are being supported to help bring the national curriculum to the classroom like ne...ver before, with one of the biggest curriculum development initiatives ever seen in South Australia being launched today. A group of 37 passionate teachers have been employed over the past nine months to create a curriculum development program and design classroom-ready resources, drawing from expert advice and the work of around 450 teachers. The new resources include detailed scope and sequence documents for learning areas in the Australian curriculum, as well as flexible and practical units of work that teach directly to the curriculum and are designed specifically for South Australian students. The first set of resources released today include: Practical units of work English, Maths, Science and Humanities and Social Sciences Units of work are provided as teachable five-week blocks on content two per school term that assist teachers to connect classroom learning to the Australian curriculum. These have been developed for four of the eight learning areas in the curriculum, with units for the remaining four areas (The Arts, Technologies, Health and Physical Education and Languages) to be developed by the Department for Education in the future. Scope and sequence documents Reception for Year 10 curriculum Scope and sequence documents set out what students are expected to learn and when, supporting teachers to appropriately sequence their classroom content in alignment with the Australian curriculum. These have been created for seven of the eight learning areas of the curriculum, with supports for the Languages learning area to be developed soon. Education Minister John Gardner said many educators across the state will welcome the introduction of these supports. These curriculum resources have been designed by South Australian teachers, for South Australian teachers, and I am confident that the availability of these supports will be welcomed by many educators across South Australia, said Minister Gardner. We are making it easier for schools to teach to the Australian curriculum, putting South Australian students in the best possible position to achieve improvement against national standards. This is a broad piece of work that has been over a year in planning, with 37 passionate educators leading the development of a series of materials that reflect the knowledge, judgement and creativity of our teachers. These resources have the potential to significantly assist teachers in planning their classroom activity, which could give them more time to address individual student outcomes and goals, focus on pedagogy and track and monitor student progress. South Australia has been making significant gains in literacy and numeracy outcomes in the past two years, but we know that there is still much more work to be done. Latest education research shows that continuous improvement and development of the curriculum is key to giving students the best opportunity to thrive at school. We are determined to build on the growth we have seen across our education system to give every learner better access to the wider curriculum and help deliver long term improvement for all South Australian students. Further resources are set to be released over the next two years as part of the initiative. The resources build upon other aspects of the Department for Education school improvement agenda including school improvement planning, data provision and literacy and numeracy advice. https://www.education.sa.gov.au/teaching/school-improvement

02.01.2022 LEADERSHIP IN CLIMATE CHANGE New report highlights South Australia’s leadership in climate change The Marshall Liberal Government’s approach to tackling clima...te change has been given the tick of approval by renowned climate economist Professor Ross Garnaut in a new report released today. The report singles out South Australia as an international leader in the clean energy transition and highlights several economic opportunities for the State. South Australia is leading in the transition to clean energy and this report shows how the state can capitalise on its significant head-start, said Professor Garnaut. South Australia is better equipped to respond to the challenges and opportunities of climate change than any other Australian state and nearly all of the world’s sub-national jurisdictions. The international economy is ready to deepen trade and investment with states that embrace the low-emissions transition, and regional South Australia would be one of the biggest beneficiaries from embracing new zero emissions opportunities. Minister for Environment and Water David Speirs said Professor Garnaut is Australia’s most respected authority when it comes to the economic risks and opportunities of climate change impacts. We believe tackling climate change is a win-win for our economy and environment, and the Marshall Liberal Government is working closely with leading experts to accelerate action on climate change, create innovative new jobs, and grow our economy, said Minister Speirs. Professor Garnaut’s advice on the economic risks and opportunities of climate change will inform South Australia’s responses and support us to become a climate-smart state. At the start of this year we set the ambitious target of a 50 per cent reduction in emissions by 2030 and we are on well on the way to achieving this. In the past there has been plenty of virtue signalling, slogans and worthless gestures when it comes to climate change, but the Marshall Liberal Government is focussed on meaningful, practical action. As South Australia recovers from the economic impacts of the COVID-10 pandemic, there will be real opportunities for new industries in the climate-smart, green economy and we want to give businesses the confidence to invest and create new jobs. The report confirms that the COVID-19 pandemic has disrupted the status-quo but Professor Garnaut identifies several opportunities for South Australia including: increased renewable energy generation, use and export expanding low emissions manufacturing and mining, including green steel and the processing of SA raw materials into low emissions products production of renewable hydrogen, and ammonia electrification of transport storing carbon in the land and sea, and generating carbon credits production of algae to reduce livestock emissions converting organic waste and other biomass to energy, bioplastics and other industrial uses adapting agriculture, buildings and infrastructure, and water management; and providing high quality, accessible information. Minister Speirs said Professor Garnaut’s advice, paired with the Government’s new Climate Change Science and Knowledge Plan, are guiding the the next phase of government action on climate change. Our Climate Change Science and Knowledge Plan for South Australia will grow the evidence base to support South Australia’s responses to climate change. said Minister Speirs. A new government climate change strategy, due for release this summer, will set out further practical actions that will help build a strong, climate smart economy, further reduce the state’s greenhouse gas emissions, and support South Australia to adapt to a changing climate. The reports can be found online at: www.environment.sa.gov.au
