20.01.2022 Maintaining daily function is important for everyone as they age and also crucial for people with dementia improving and maintaining function has shown to have cognition benefits and reduces falls that can have severe implications. The CDPC opened a booth today at the Occupational Therapy Australia conference http://www.otaus2019.com.au//custom-113-de4c35633e774e10be (the peak body and professional association for #OT practitioners of #OccupationalTherapy). If you are at ...the conference take advantage of the resources being given out at the booth. Occupational therapy plays an important role for people with dementia by helping people continue to practice daily tasks and functioning in the home. This enables people with dementia to maintain function and also assists any carers in the home. You can see some of our research here https://cdpc.sydney.edu.au/research/maintaining-function/ #seniors #sydney #healthyageing #public #dementia #ageing#ageinplace https://www.otaus.com.au/ See more
20.01.2022 Good story on an Intergenerational Care Project led by Prof Fitzgerald, Through the interactions with children, the older participants were also able to reaffirm their feelings of importance, reflect on their achievements, re-learn things they already knew or had forgotten and have a positive sense of wellbeing. At the end of the story, see the link to a moving and powerful series ABC series, Old Peoples Home for 4 Year Olds, starting next Tuesday night. Our director, Prof Kurrle, is an expert on the show. 18.01.2022 Around 15% of dementia cases globally could be preventedWhile age is a risk factor, dementia is not a normal part of ageing Many Australians dont realise they can effectively reduce their risk of developing dementia see the list of risk factors and links to CDPC dementia care research at end of article.
17.01.2022 Catch this 3 minute report on how we as a society need to look at models of aged care that actually provide a good quality of life and move away from a focus on institutional-like aged care. The report highlights the research on our study on home-like models of care, see article https://www.mja.com.au//clustered-domestic-residential-age Prof Whitehead, a leader on the study into "clustered" or homelike models of care said aged care needs to deliver a better quality of life and the homelike models provide that and we need a "shift of thinking...philosophy". And another comment from a person who works in aged care, "(when I get to that stage) I would like a double bed...champagne on tap...Netflix...a space to dance". #healthyageing #agedcare #DementiaDoesntDiscriminate #dementia

16.01.2022 Walk in our shoes, look through our eyes see how people with dementia experience the world... some of us at our office today and some clinicians at Hornsby Hospital had an opportunity to do just that, when Rebecca Rogers from Dementia Australia, one of our partner organisations, visited our offices in Hornsby Hospital to demonstrate the Enabling EDIE virtual reality technology used by Dementia Australia in training. Comments such as its confusing, the light is really bright, makes me anxious see https://www.dementia.org.au//dementia-australia-virtual-re and the course on Enabling EDIE https://dementialearning.org.au/product/enabling-edie/ @DementiaAustralia #dementia #ageing
14.01.2022 If you didnt catch this lastnight on ABC, watch it now. Richard Glover in his interview on ABC Sydneys Drive this afternoon with our director Sue Kurrle just mentioned how the musical director found he needed to break up the song into smaller parts where it was getting difficult to record. The conversation he had with Sue was about how we need to treat people with dementia, "affirm and distract...we need to bring back the human touch, humour, music..." and what is dementia friendly in the community, what does it mean for example, for a coffee shop - just awareness is important and being prepared to give a little extra help.
13.01.2022 Findings from a new publication examining enablers and barriers to access to outdoors in nursing homes found a well designed space with protection from weather as well as ease of access was important. 01.01.2022 Talking about this show, our director Prof Kurrle (expert on the show) says: In order to make positive change for people in aged care here, we need evidence that intergenerational care can work in this country. We hope that our experiment will give that evidence and allow it to be adopted much more widely. Older people were young once and hopefully seeing these four-year-olds will really draw them out of themselves. Get them singing and laughing and dancing again as they wouldve when they were younger, bringing them back into life again". #agedcare #healthyageing #agelessplay
01.01.2022 With 63% people in residential aged care taking 9 or more medications and some no longer of benefit - this tool, developed by a CDPC team, is beneficial as it allows for a coordinated approach with pharmacists, GPs and aged care staff to manage the medication while incorporating the care goals of the person.
