07.01.2022 November 14 is World Diabetes Day and Clare Doctors Surgery would like to help spread awareness about Diabetes. Below are some key figures relating to Diabetes: 463 million adults (1-in-11) were living with diabetes in 2019 The number of people living with diabetes is expected rise to 578 million by 2030.... 1 in 2 adults with diabetes remain undiagnosed (232 million). The majority have type 2 diabetes. More than 3 in 4 people with diabetes live in low and middle- income countries. 1 in 6 live births (20 million) are affected by high blood glucose (hyperglycaemia) in pregnancy. Two-thirds of people with diabetes live in urban areas and three-quarters are of working age. 1 in 5 people with diabetes (136 million) are above 65 years old. Diabetes caused 4.2 million deaths in 2019. Diabetes was responsible for at least $760 billion in health expenditure in 2019 10% of the global total spent on healthcare. 06.01.2022 With the warm weather upon us and Summer just around the corner, we remind everyone to be ready for the heat. Learn the signs of Heatstroke and how to prevent it: SIGNS OF HEATSTROKE - ... Rapid pulse and fast, shallow breathing Trouble speaking, slurred speech Problems concentrating or coordinating movements Aggressive or strange behaviour Dizziness, confusion, seizures or loss of consciousness Sudden rise in body temperature Hot and dry and possibly red skin, possibly with no sweat dry, swollen tongue Headache, nausea or vomiting Intense thirst HOW TO PREVENT HEATSTROKE - Drink plenty of water even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid hot or sugary drinks. Keep cool try to avoid direct sun. Wear a hat and lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing. Keep your house cool close windows, shut curtains and blinds, and use air-conditioning if you have it. Help others visit or phone friends, family and neighbours who are more at risk. Keep children cool and give them lots to drink. Ensure pets have plenty of water and shade. Have a plan know who to call if you need help, and follow your doctor’s advice if you have any medical conditions. Never leave babies, children or animals alone in a car.
