25.01.2022 Fascinating native bees

24.01.2022 Larva being tended by bees. Look closely at the varying sizes of the larva in the bottom of the cells.

23.01.2022 Some of our hives made their own new queen. We were able to catch and mark this lovely lady. She was a little reluctant returning to her devoted subjects.

22.01.2022 The bees are booming and the honey is pouring in. Despite the dry conditions all hives are healthy and going well. Bumper honey harvest.

21.01.2022 Our new queen bees and their attendants have arrived express post from Queensland. The queens are the ones with the blue dot you can just see in some of the queen cages. The exit is blocked with a sugar fondant that the bees will chew through to let the queen out once they have been installed in the hive.

21.01.2022 Sharing nature’s bounty

18.01.2022 Autumn Honey Harvest

18.01.2022 Two day old eggs in the cells. A bit excited as we don’t always see the eggs.

18.01.2022 Down side to having queens that are laying machines - swarms. Caught and given a new home.

18.01.2022 Our new queens have hit their stride, this frame is almost covered in brood (bees about to hatch) with a little bit of capped honey around the top.

17.01.2022 This little lady is busy collecting pollen, which she carries on her back legs to the hive. Pollen is the bees’ main source of protein.

16.01.2022 Local business at East Kurrajong

15.01.2022 The turpentine trees have finally turned on the nectar and the bees are loving it. If you look closely at the flowers you can see the little pools of nectar.

13.01.2022 The Blue Banded bees are becoming a popular sight in our garden.

13.01.2022 Checked the split (splitting one hive into two) we did two days ago. The bought queen has been successfully released from her cage. The one with the blue dot, note how she differs to the worker bees around her. Her abdomen is elongated so that she can lay the eggs at the bottom of the cell. Her abdomen holds all the eggs she will lay over the next 3-5 years.

13.01.2022 Wouldn’t this bee good! https://www.abc.net.au//new-aus-research-finds-ho/12618064

12.01.2022 Honey bees and native bees sharing the sunflower.

12.01.2022 Merry Christmas to all our lovely friends. Take care of each other and see you in the New Year.

11.01.2022 Sorry more egg photos. First time trying to breed our own queens. So far it’s worked out well. 18 of these have been transferred to a hive that was made queenless by doing a split.

10.01.2022 Honey comes in so many colors, depending on which flowers the bees were foraging on at the time. This giant backlit pyramid of honey shows off all the different pretty shades nicely! (via London Beekeepers on Twitter: https://twitter.com/londonbeekee/status/755882644898996224)

07.01.2022 On a scale of "one" to "blue-banded bee with the heebeegeebees", how ready are you to shake off the winter blues? Dan Smailes, who shot this fabulous vision, sa...id this poor little bee had been stuck inside overnight. "I found him patiently waiting at our front door to be let out in the early morning," he said. "He flew directly to this palm leaf and did a celebratory wiggle-waggle before flying back to where he was born - in the brick mortar nest at my front doorstep." : Dan Smailes from Sydney Native Bees | #ABCMyVideo

06.01.2022 If there is something in flower the bees will find it.

04.01.2022 Doing their bit - pollination

03.01.2022 This might be of interest to those of you who worry about real natural honey crystallising. I know a few of you actually prefer it, so much less mess when you spread it. https://blog.beeraw.com/real-raw-honey-crystal

03.01.2022 WHEN BEES MAKE GREAT HONEY... We are overjoyed to have received 10 ribbons at 2019 Hawkesbury Show - 2 first place, 5 second place & 3 third place. Thank you to the other competitors, the judges and stewards, without you there would be no competition. A big thank you to all that have encouraged and supported us over the last 18 months, especially in the Hawkesbury community.

03.01.2022 Enjoying the sunshine at Hawkesbury Race Club Sunday Funday. My one bet of the day on Buzz. First place, it did seem prophetic.
