25.01.2022 Progress update, have finished placing strips on the Ellipsis hull and started sanding. Photo shows the feature strip on the Ellipsis. Should finish the Corbie 5 hull soon and start sanding it to show the different feature strip and other design feature afforded by the chine on the hull.

24.01.2022 Building 2 boats at the same time means that you can never have enough small clamps and masking tape.

23.01.2022 Rear deck of Ellipsis pre sanded, registration number cut out and deck cut using a scalpel and a lovely little Veritas hand router. A few hours of extra time spent on the marquetry but it should dress up the boats nicely.

22.01.2022 MadMax progress, hull is stripped, sanded and a coat of epoxy applied to seal the timber. Will add the glass tomorrow.

22.01.2022 Both hulls glassed, this really brings out the colour in the different timbers. I will let the epoxy harden properly for a couple of days and then remove the hulls from the building frames.

20.01.2022 Corbie 5 back from the paint shop, very pleased with result. Just have to add the bow bumper and it’s ready to add electrics and rig.

18.01.2022 Ellipsis hull removed from building frame, sanded inside and ready to glass inside. Deck building board ready with central feature strip in place. Bulkhead in place and glassed, ready to complete the stripping. Corbie 5 hull removed from building board with internal frames still in place. Deck building board also prepared with feature strip and bulkhead in place ready for strips to be added.

15.01.2022 MadMax deck planked and sanded, photos show before and after epoxy precoat applied. Really brings out the colours in the different timbers. Decided to go with a skiff style deck on the MadMax just for appearance sake.

15.01.2022 I have been working on the old boat restoration, it is over 100 years old and may have been lying on its side for some time as the keel is twisted to one side. Without resorting to cutting the keel off I have made a few cuts and with the use of some straps and some wedges i have made the keel straighter but not perfect. 4 coats of epoxy and sanding filler and much sanding the hull was ready to glass. The photo shows the hull after glassing and one filler coat, it will probably require several flow coats before painting.

14.01.2022 MadMax had its maiden voyage today. Nicely balanced and I love the way it climbs into the gusts and maintains speed.

14.01.2022 Both hulls glassed inside. Rudder post epoxied in Ellipsis, using laser level to line the fins up.

13.01.2022 In between stages on Corbie while waiting for epoxy to set is a good time to start a new project. Building frames for MadMax set up and ready to start adding strips. Need to decide if this boat gets a feature strip in new pattern or something different.

12.01.2022 Ellipsis had its first official sail in the local club racing. I had to add 120g of weight to bring it up to the 4kg minimum weight. In the handicap races i was sailing off a 60sec handicap and in the scratch races the Ellipsis achieved a 1st, 2nd and 3rd place. A good result with fine tuning to come.

12.01.2022 Facebook have been making some changes and as i am not a business or in business i do not want to misrepresent myself. As soon as i can work out how to cancel this page/ account i will be doing so. I have created a personal page and will continue to post there, so if there is any interest in seeing what i am up to with boat building/ restoration then I guess you search for Geoff Horsley.

12.01.2022 Now for something very different. I have been asked to restore an old model. It was apparently built in 1915 by the owner’s grandfather as a task for his boat building apprenticeship in Scotland . Another relative remembered seeing it sailing on the Forth of Firth in the early 1920s. The current owner has asked for it to be restored to sailing condition. I will be seeking advice, support and ideas from the wooden and model boat groups to bring this old girl back to her former glory and will be posting photos of the process. Any and all advice is welcome.

10.01.2022 MadMax back from the paint shop, absolutely stunning finish. Now the question is can I complete it in time for sailing tomorrow? Have to remove winch from Ellipsis and build the A & B rigs.

09.01.2022 Ellipsis progress, the deck is not epoxied down yet but have completed the vang well. It took me a whole day to get it constructed, sanded and glassed. Still thinking about the best place to put the winch, if it goes in front of the bulkhead then I have to cut into the foredeck, if I place it near vang well/hatch will there be too much weight aft? Looking for suggestions.

08.01.2022 Now there are 3! Just waiting for some winches and rigging gear and then get them measured when the border opens up next week. The Ellipsis #52 has proved to be very fast in the local club racing, more than holding its own upwind with amazing downwind speed. The MadMax #85 will be launched for a test sail today and then raced on Saturday. The Corbie at this stage is just waiting to be rigged. I already have plans for my next boat so 2 of the 3 will be put up for sale until the next one is ready and I will keep one to sail for now.

08.01.2022 Decks on both boats progressing, again you can never have enough clamps or masking tape. Ellipsis deck shown here

08.01.2022 I have been asked to explain how I created the feature strips on the sides of the 2 boats I am building. I made a short video which I thought might be easier than explaining in text. There is an infinite number of designs possible using different length strips and playing with different angles. Hope the video helps and please don't judge me on the quality of the explanation.

05.01.2022 Progress update, decks glassed inside and out, started cutting out hatches and lined up fins. Next step is to finalise placement of winch and servo and create vang area before fitting decks. Inlaid registration numbers look good.

05.01.2022 Ellipsis is nearly complete, hull just back from the the car panel shop, professional clear coat sprayed on, looks stunning. Deck fittings are installed, will be installing RMG Smart Switch, Craig Smith fins have been fitted. Corbie is also getting close to completion and will be fitted out the same as the Ellipsis. Have decided that both boats will be offered for sale. My thanks to Jeff Byerley of Mirage Radio Yachts for providing me with hull drawings for his MadMax design. It is an older design, but was very successful in its day and I really like the look of it. We have 3 in the Ballina club and they go very well, so I will be making a wooden version.

05.01.2022 The 2 hulls are sanded ready to be glassed. The second photo shows more detail of the feature strip and additional Australian Red Cedar section which could be added due to the chine on the Corbie 5.

01.01.2022 Rear deck of Corbie with initial sanding. I have cut out registration number from veneer and preparing to inset into the deck so they are flush. Should look good after deck is glassed
