23.01.2022 FOSTER CARE: Thirteen years of fostering has taught Lyn Matthews a thing or two about raising children. From delighting in the seemingly small and sometimes silly things, to endless patience and love, Lyn knows what it takes to raise a happy child. ``It’s about giving them safety, because that makes all the difference,’’ she says. Today Lyn joined kinship carer and Centacare Aboriginal Cultural Consultant Les Wanganeen at Photovoice, a collection of images on display at the D...epartment for Child Protection SA. Photovoice illustrates how Centacare foster carers' perception of their role has grown during their caring journeys, from initially wanting to make a difference, to developing a deeper understanding of the challenges and complexities many children face. Moments of joy, sadness and grief are expressed in the photographs, which also mirror their hopes for the future including additional support and continuity of care for children. Photovoice is on display until Friday in the ground floor gallery at 31 Flinders Street. #playyourpart #NCPW2020 #NCPW Rachel Sanderson - Member for Adelaide See more

18.01.2022 FOSTER AND KINSHIP CARER WEEK: Traditionally at this time of year we host a celebratory lunch to thank our foster carers for everything they do. But this week we threw a virtual party instead, with Director Dale West and Centacare Foster Care Manager Amalie Mannik co-hosting the fun on Zoom. Our foster families play a pivotal role in little lives and we could not be more grateful for their commitment, dedication and the love and stability they provide to the many children in need of support. #Centacare #joinourcircleofcare https://youtu.be/ycfPSDnsRh8

14.01.2022 CHILD PROTECTION: It's National Child Protection Week. In its 30th year, the initiative's 2020 theme is `Putting children first'. Putting children first means prioritising the safety and wellbeing of children. To grow up well, children need to feel safe and loved, have a chance to play and explore, have a say in decisions that affect them, and have access to food, shelter and healthcare. For children to thrive we need to come together as a community and put children’s needs first during National Child Protection Week and every week. #NCPW2020 #ncpw #playyourpart.

07.01.2022 Carers, children and even a family pet form a circle in the new Centacare Foster Care logo, to symbolise our child-focused practice, and the care team that wraps around foster carers to train and support them on every step of their journey. One of those carers is Elisa Carey. Today Elisa joined Department for Child Protection SA Out of Home Care Executive Director Sue Barr on FIVEaa to talk to Tony Pilkington about all things foster and kinship care. Of the support Centacare ...has provided her family, Elisa said: ``We have a dedicated support worker that’s there ... to visit us and provide the amount of support, whether it be just somebody to vent to, somebody to ask for advice, anything you can think of. You give them a call and they’ll be there for you. ``We also have a 24-7 support line, so even after hours, if there’s anything that’s going on, there’s always somebody that can be reached. ``Centacare offer a great range of training, so while children don’t come with a handbook, Centacare provides the training needed to give you those sorts of ideas - the processes, the strategies to be able to deal with really challenging behaviours - anything from just the infant safety training right through to therapeutic crisis intervention. ``It’s absolutely fantastic. We can connect to other carers, so you’re there with like-minded people that can offer you support. ``You can jump on the phone to one of the carers who know exactly what you’re going through I think that’s invaluable, really.'' *Today marks the start of Foster and Kinship Carer Week for 2020. The week provides an opportunity for us to celebrate and show our gratitude for the dedicated and passionate carers who open their hearts and homes to children and young people in need everyday. #joinourcircleofcare #Centacare #fostercare #FKCW2020

03.01.2022 Centacare foster carers have used pictures to illustrate their journeys, to further understanding of their important role. On display now at Department for Child Protection SA's ground floor gallery in Flinders St, the Photovoice exhibition provides a powerful insight into foster carers' everyday experiences, and helps others to see foster care through their eyes. #Centacare https://www.centacare.org.au/photovoice-puts-foster-care-f/

01.01.2022 The fabulous Elisa Carey spoke to Tony Pilkington on FIVEaa today about her experiences as a short-term/reunification foster carer. Elisa and her husband joined Centacare Foster Care program two years ago. They have two children of their own and currently have one foster child in their care. Of the challenges of fostering, Elisa said: ... ``When a child comes into your care, there’s just that period of adjustment - you’re getting to know them, they’re getting to know you; they might have a lot of challenging behaviours. ``They have to slot into your family, they have to feel the connection there, they have to feel safe. It's just all about developing that relationship where they can then start to become the happy little children that they really should be.'' Of preparing her own children to welcome a foster child into their home, Elisa said: ``When we first started to do this, we had to have that sit down with the children and let them know there’s going to be this other little person coming in who needs our love and care, and who’s going to be part of our family. There might be those challenging behaviours that come along with it, but we’re going to love them and show them that they’re part of the family, and help them in any way that we can.'' Thank you, Elisa, for all you do #joinourcircleofcare #Centacare #fostercare #FKCW2020
