24.01.2022 Today is Remembrance Day. A time to observe the memory of those who died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. CAWLS specifically remembers and thanks the women who have and still give their lives to protect us all The iconic recruitment poster shown below was created and aimed at women during the Second World War. It drew on elements of popular visual culture to counter the perception that it was inappropriate for women to enlist in the military services or to w...ork in heavy industry and agriculture. The imagery and the wide range of occupations make the poster all-encompassing, implying that there is a job for every Australian woman

18.01.2022 Today marks the start of ‘16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence’. CAWLS are joining organisations, leaders, individuals and businesses around the globe in the call to ‘Orange the World: Fund, Respond, Prevent, Collect!’ This year has been like no other Even before COVID-19 hit, violence against women and girls had reached pandemic proportions.... In the Northern Territory, we have seen a significant increase in the reporting of domestic-violence related assault since the biosecurity area restrictions were lifted on 5 June 2020. This supports the conclusion drawn from experiences overseas and other Australian jurisdictions that lockdown has made it harder for women to seek help and access support. We join the UN Secretary-General in calling for action to bridge funding gaps, ensure essential services remain available during the COVID-19 crisis, focus on prevention and improved collection of data.

16.01.2022 Content Warning: This post relates to domestic violence and harm to children... ‘I don’t live now. I exist’ are sentiments heard too frequently in the domestic violence and family law space. There is still a long way to go to ensure that our family law courts and trauma informed and responsive to the presence of coercive control and violence in a family unit.... We stand with the women and children who deserve better from our justice system. https://bit.ly/3eVe4H1

15.01.2022 Womenespecially Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander womenare being misidentified as perpetrators on protection orders and the effects of this are far-reaching This resonates strongly with the experience of our clients and CAWLS lawyers. This week, ANROWS has released a report titled "Accurately identifying the ‘person most in need of protection’ in domestic and family violence law".... One of the key recommendations is to create guidance for police on identifying patterns of coercive control, so that women’s use of violence can be considered in context. To read the report, a summary of the research and the key findings, visit https://bit.ly/2KB9KSe
