20.01.2022 MARY ANN DAVIS (1837-1922): Born Mary Ann Ward, daughter of Brisbane Water pioneers William & Catherine Ward. She was born at Hardy’s Bay in 1837 and attended the little Church of England school at East Gosford, later transferring to the church school at Kincumber, which was run by pioneer William Davis. She later married William’s son Rock Davis, a well-known Shipbuilder of Brisbane Water. She and Rock lived at Blackwall near Woy Woy and had 4 children together. She was a tr...ue pioneer, considered the oldest native of Brisbane Water at the time. She was highly esteemed and respected by everyone in the district. Her husband and all her children had predeceased her at the time of her death in 1922, however, she left behind a number of grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Many of her descendants still live on the Central Coast. She was laid to rest at St Paul’s Cemetery, Kincumber. Image: Mary Ann Davis (nee Ward) courtesy of Central Coast Council

18.01.2022 BENJAMIN DAVIS (1826-1883): Shipbuilder, member of the pioneering Davis family. The suburb of ‘Bensville’ is named after him. Born in Ireland, he came out to Australia in 1833 with his parents and settled at Brisbane Water. In 1850 he married Eliza Cordelia Wetherall at Kincumber and had several children, who later helped develop the Bensville area. Growing up, he and his brothers learned shipbuilding, and in the 1850s Benjamin started his own business at ‘Davistown’ (named a...fter the family). Later, he bought land at a place called ‘Will’s Point’ where he set up another ship yard and built a house overlooking the water. The area eventually became known as ‘Bensville’, named in his honour. During his life Benjamin built around 49 vessels. He died in 1883 and is buried at St Paul’s Anglican Cemetery, Kincumber. After his death, his son Arthur carried on the shipbuilding at Bensville. 10.01.2022 THOMAS DAVIS (1832-1893): Pioneer shipbuilder at Terrigal, brother of Rock & Benjamin Davis of the well-known Davis family. Born in Ireland, he came to Australia with his family and settled at Brisbane Water. In 1855 he married Susannah Pickett at Kincumber, member of another well-known pioneering family of the district. He first started his ship building at Cockle Creek, then around 1869 bought most of the land in Terrigal where he built a ship yard, sawmill and beautiful h...ouse overlooking the Pacific Ocean. Corn, sugarcane, oats, peaches and bananas were grown on his property. In the late 1870s he was the major employer of the district, providing work (directly & indirectly) to about 120 people. His sawmill was one of the earliest mills in the region where timber was traded along the coast between Sydney and Terrigal.
