23.01.2022 MALNUTRITION AWARENESS | Did you know that one third of adults admitted to hospital are malnourished? You are also twice as likely to have a hospital acquired complication, like a pressure injury, fall or chest infection, if you are malnourished. That is why our Dietitians are raising awareness about the condition this week as part of Malnutrition Awareness Week (6 to 9 October 2020).... Malnutrition is often thought of as something that only affects the elderly, but it can come in many shapes and sizes, sometimes affecting the most unlikely of people. It occurs when a person does not consume enough energy or protein for their body’s needs. This can be due to increased nutritional needs while being unwell, or not eating enough. Some warning signs of malnutrition include: losing weight without meaning to, eating less than usual or a reduced appetite, having to tighten your belt buckle or noticing clothing or jewellery becoming looser. If you are experiencing these signs, talk to your GP or Community Nurse and ask them to complete a Nutrition Risk Screen. If you have a positive score, you may benefit from seeing a Dietitian. You can find out more about our nutrition services here: www.cclhd.health.nsw.gov.au/services/nutrition

23.01.2022 KNOW YOUR LIMITS | What are you up to this long weekend? Have fun, relax and enjoy while being COVID safe. If you’re having people over at your home, please remember to limit your visitors up to 20 visitors, including adults and children, may visit another household at any one time. A member of the household is not counted as a visitor. If you’re catching up with friends or family outdoors, small groups are key - limit your group to no more than 20 people as a precautio...n. The best protection against COVID-19 is to know your limits and do the following: Keep 1.5 metres apart. Wash your hands regularly. If you’re unwell, stay home and get tested immediately our COVID-19 clinics are open this long weekend. Wear a mask if you will be in a situation where it will be a challenge to physically distance. It is important to still try to physically distance if you are wearing a mask. 21.01.2022 OUR PEOPLE | Meet Paige, one of our star Mental Health Occupational Therapists (OTs). Paige helps older patients in Wyong Hospital to re-build the skills they need for everyday living. This might mean doing something a little differently than before, learning new skills, or getting some support for a while to help regain their independence. I love my job. I love getting to know people their stories and what they value. I love seeing their face light up when they talk abou...t the things they used to love doing, or the things that are really important to them. I get to work creatively with people to overcome the challenges and barriers that may be holding them back from doing those things again. It could be cooking, or catching the bus, or getting back to participating in a hobby or social activity that brings a sense of enjoyment or satisfaction to life. OTs work holistically, especially in mental health. Every single person needs a different approach even if they have the same diagnosis, because as an OT, it’s about focusing on what’s important to each individual. That’s what keeps it super interesting and keeps you on your toes. One day you might be in the role of a teacher, the next their friend, the next their cheerleader. On the tougher days you hold hope, remind them that recovery is possible, and stick with them through the ups and downs. Every day I am inspired by the strength and resilience of the people I meet. The ability and determination of people to keep moving forward in the face of adversity is incredible. Being human can be hard, but every day I witness the ability of humans to do brave and incredible things and that makes it all worth it. #THISISOT

20.01.2022 CARERS CONQUERING COVID | Being a carer is a commitment. One that does not stop, even in a pandemic. That is why continued support for carers is so important and that is what we are highlighting as part of Carers Week (11 to 17 October 2020). While some of our face-to-face carer support programs had to be placed on hold during the height of COVID-19 on the Central Coast, our Carer Support Unit have continued to provide remote support safely through one-to-one phone consultat...ions and welfare checks, as well as regular Wellness Communications via email and post. Over the past few weeks, we have been delighted to have our regular programs start to resume, including our face-to-face consultations and tai chi sessions. Geoff and Terri (pictured) have been particularly grateful to be back at tai chi saying: While it looks a bit different with masks in use, it still provides much needed relief. The tai chi we do is a gentle form of exercise in a relaxed atmosphere. We also have a good laugh and chat over a cuppa and thoroughly enjoy the hour. A carer is a family member or friend who provides support to a person who is living with a disability, a mental health or chronic health condition, or someone who is frail aged. It is important to note that a carer is not someone in a paid position, such as an aged/disability care worker or volunteer who may assist with personal care, shopping. If you are a carer, there is support available. Nationally, the Carer Gateway website offers all sorts of information and advice and can arrange free counselling with a qualified counsellor. For more information call 1800 422 737 or go to https://www.carergateway.gov.au/ Locally, you can find information and support at our Carers Retreat at 91 Holden Street, Gosford (parking is available on site) or you can call our Carer Support Unit on 4320 5556. You can also find out more about our services for carers and other local supports on our website: https://www.cclhd.health.nsw.gov.au/patients-and-visitors//

14.01.2022 KEEPING US SAFE | These superstars are from our Infection Prevention and Control Unit. They work tirelessly to minimise infection risks for our staff, patients, carers and visitors and have gone above and beyond to keep everyone safe during these unprecedented times. In the early stages of the pandemic they worked rapidly to equip our staff with the skills, equipment and reassurance they needed to safely care for patients, and they continue to provide an incredible amount of ...advice and assistance. This week is International Infection Prevention Week and while we wanted to celebrate by thanking them for the amazing work they do, they of course, wanted take the opportunity to remind everyone how to stay safe during COVID-19: Clean your hands regularly with soap and water for 20 seconds, or use an alcohol-based hand sanitiser. Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when coughing and sneezing or use your elbow, not your hands. Avoid close contact with people unwell with cold or flu-like symptoms, and if you have symptoms stay home and get tested immediately. Avoid touching your face and avoid shaking hands with others. Maintain a distance of 1.5 metres from others (pool noodles not required ). Wear a mask when in places where you can’t physically distance. See more

12.01.2022 KIND COMPANIONSHIP | After immigrating from Malaysia with his family to find safety and security in Australia, Eric now spends his retirement giving back. I’ve been a volunteer at Gosford Hospital for five years now, initially working in the respiratory ward and now in the geriatric ward. I provide company to patients who may not have many visitors. I enjoy a chat and especially love to sit and listen to the stories patients tell me, finding out about their lives and provid...ing assistance at meal times if required. I find my role uplifting and love to meet all kinds of people. One of the most memorable memories I have was spending time with a non-verbal patient. I remained at her bedside providing a sort of silent companionship. When the time finally came for her to be discharged, she raised her head and gave me the most beautiful smile that spoke a thousand thank yous! We’re so lucky to have such wonderful and caring volunteers like Eric. Thank you for all that you do!

12.01.2022 DELIVERING DIGNITY | That is what our new Mental Health Op Shops aim do. 12.01.2022 MENTAL HEALTH MATTERS | Meet Kate, Clinical Nurse Specialist. Kate supports people on the road to recovery from long term mental health issues; helping them regain their confidence and independence so they can enjoy being part of their communities again. I have always been very passionate about mental health and the impact it has on people’s lives. I’ve been doing this job for 12 years it’s the only thing I’ve wanted to do as a nurse. I know that so many people have strugg...led during this pandemic, but I also think it brought us together in a lot of ways. We are all so busy these days and I think it forced us to really slow down and think about what is important. We took the time to check in with each other; to make sure others were ok, to try and lift their spirits and let people know we cared. Our local coffee shop put up a sign thanking nurses for the work we’re doing; saying we’re doing a great job. It was a small gesture but it really helped to remind us that the work we do is so worthwhile. A lot of elderly and immunosuppressed people couldn’t leave their homes so I would drop extra toilet paper at their house, or pick up groceries for friends with new babies. Even making a simple call to check in with our clients was so important, as that may have been the only contact they’d had all day. For a lot of people, we are the only support they have. I love building long term, therapeutic relationships with people; they feel cared for, and you know you have a real impact on their lives. #WorldMentalHealthDay2020 See more

06.01.2022 EARLY SCREENING MEANS OPTIMAL VISION | Have you had your four-year-old’s eyesight checked? Having their eyes checked before they start school is important to detect and treat any potential problems affecting their vision, some of which could impact their education and development. We are reminding all parents today, on World Sight Day.... Because children rarely complain of eye problems and often don’t realise they can’t see properly, the only way to tell if your child has a vision problem is to have their eyesight tested. Your child’s vision can be tested for free by the NSW Health Statewide Eyesight Preschooler Screening program better known as StEPS. Our StEPS screeners visit preschools and early childhood education centres across the Central Coast. Your child can also have their vision tested at a local catchup StEPS clinic, at a NSW Health Child and Family Health service or with your GP. For more on our local StEPS program visit: https://www.cclhd.health.nsw.gov.au//c/vision-assessments/

They are part of the Wyong Hospital’s Green Travel Plan Working Group which has been created to look at opportunities during the Wyong Hospital Redevelopment to reduce the environmental impact of travel to and from Wyong Hospital and to encourage staff, patients and visitors to be more active. As Wyong Hospital grows it’s important we look for ways to be more sustainable and one simple way to do this is to consider more environment...ally-friendly ways to get to and from work. We know it isn’t possible for everyone, but if you can ride or walk all or part of your way to work, it will not only help the environment but it will be good for your health as well! Brooke said. It’s National Ride2Work Day and Central Coast Go Active 2 Work Day on Wednesday 21 October. It’s also Biketober this month, which makes it the perfect opportunity for all Coasties to get on their bikes and start enjoying the physical and mental health benefits! See more

01.01.2022 VIRTUAL REALITY RETRIEVALS | Yesterday was our annual RED Day, or Retrieval Education Day, at Gosford Hospital. RED Day is a multidisciplinary education and training program developed by our Central Coast Regional Retrieval Service to allow clinicians working across Central Coast Local Health District to gain skills and knowledge in preparing and transporting critically ill patients. Throughout the day clinicians rotate through a series of six clinical scenarios to develop a...n understanding of the retrieval environment, limitations, hazards and implications for patient management. The exercises are interactive, and encourage participation and critical thinking in a safe simulated environment. This year we trialled virtual reality technology for the first time to simulate a scenario in a real ambulance. A 360 degree camera view of the interior environment of an ambulance teamed with virtual reality technology gave participants a realistic experience complete with the sights, sounds and motion of a real ambulance whilst caring for a critically ill patient. Thank you to our Retrieval, Trauma and Learning and Development teams along with partners NSW Ambulance for making this happen!
