22.01.2022 Wonderful non-pharmacological pain relief for birthing - TENS machines are offered as part of our package for women birthing with us!

08.01.2022 This placenta was born attached to a 4kg baby at 43 weeks and 2 days. I am aware of many babies being born at 43 weeks plus and particularly in the last year wh...ich is very interesting. This placenta has no calcification and looked this beautiful and lush following optimal cord care. I commented that the placenta could have seen the baby through to uni. It was THAT LUSH! Sooo healthy. I see many healthy placentas at 43 weeks plus, one at 44 plus weeks. This one positively shone! The placenta is the baby’s so will be the age and health of the baby. It’s the baby’s organ. It does not expire according to the calendar - it continues for as long as it has an adequate blood supply. Occasionally a placenta is not functioning well - there will be signs well before the end of pregnancy. Occasionally maternal illness, stress or overexposure to toxins (ie a regular smoker) can mean that the placental function is less than optimal and that is often visible when the placenta is born. It appears that the majority of birth HCPs believe that placentas expire due to gestational age. But that belief has no basis in physiological fact, is not a logical belief and there is no GOOD evidence to support that belief. Professor Fox’s paper (1997) in the British Medical Journal on the aging of the placenta never gets old because the physiology of the placenta and childbirth for that matter can not have changed in so short a time so his findings remain wonderfully relevant. The implications of sharing this unfounded belief is that thousands of parents are ending their pregnancies every year on the basis of this myth. Ending pregnancies with various induction methods is clearly having knock ons - a cascade of interventions & unnecessary harm to parents & babies. Of course induction is clearly beneficial in a small amount of circumstances and the parent may consider that the knock ons are worth it once they’ve weighed the risks and benefits for them and their families. However today here in the UK there were hundreds of pregnancies that were ended, the efficiency and ecstasy of spontaneous labour denied, based on a myth. #physiologicalbirth #induction

01.01.2022 Did you know that you will likely go into labor on your own after your water breaks? It used to be more common to wait, but here in the US most women get induc...ed once their water breaks. In fact, I had to get these statistics from New Zealand! Waiting, otherwise known as expectant management can be an option provided there are no infections or fever and you maintain strict hygiene (I.e no exams, no tampons, changing pads frequently, no baths, etc.). Pregnant women will continue to make amniotic fluid, so staying well hydrated is important. Thank you Paula Skelton, Midwife @kiwifamilies for making this information available. #FunFacts #SundayStats #makemoreamnioticfluid #neverdrybirth #Yourbodyworkswell #NOEXAMS #expectantmanagement #midwiferycare #birthstreambabyof2020 #birthstreambabyofeveryyear See more
