25.01.2022 The question we are most frequently asked is what does an Occupational Therapist do? As OT’s we support people of all abilities to engage in activities (their occupations) that they find meaningful. As Paediatric Occupational therapists this means we support children in their occupations. What is a child’s occupation? ... Play Eating Sleeping Self-care School Playing sport If your child struggles with any of these occupations our therapists are here to help you and your child develop the skills required to achieve independence in their daily life. Some of the skills your child needs to participate in these occupations are: Social/Play skills - Initiating play, engaging in pretend play, being flexible and resolving conflict with peers, building self confidence and resilience, managing emotions. Eating Using cutlery, eating a variety of foods, tolerating different colours, texture, shapes and temperatures of food. Sitting at the table to eat. Independently feeding themselves. Self-care skills - Doing up buttons and zippers, tying shoelaces, donning shoes and socks, dressing, using the toilet and associated skills, brushing teeth and hair. Sleeping - Falling asleep, staying asleep and waking up. School Fine motor skills including handwriting, cognitive skills, paying attention, following instructions and routines, listening skills, managing transitions between activities and self-directed learning. Sport Gross motor and social skills, motor planning, being a team player, joint attention skills and following direction from both peers and coaches. Sensory/Emotional regulation Recognising and responding appropriately to sensory information from their environments and using tools that enable them to reach an optimal level of regulation so that they can participate in tasks. As Therapists, we can provide therapeutic intervention such as parent education and coaching, modification of environments and tasks to facilitate inclusion, equipment provision and developing your child’s skills to enable increased independence in their daily occupations. Outside of our direct work with your child in their therapy session, we invest time continuing our own professional development to ensure we are providing the highest quality of care to our Central Coast community. We build relationships with key stakeholders such as pre-schools, schools and community sport providers. We also work closely with multidisciplinary providers on the coast to ensure we are all working to achieve the best outcome for your child. As Occupational Therapists we feel honoured and privileged to support your child on their journey to achieve their highest potential. 16.01.2022 Hello wonderful #CCOT families! We are all very excited as we welcome you back into the clinic for face to face therapy, however there are some changes we would like you to be aware of. 1. We have staggered appointment times which means your child's session will differ by 10-15 minutes, please see reminder email/text.... 2. Appointments will be 50 minutes face to face to allow for additional 10 minutes cleaning and sterilizing between sessions. 3. You will notice seating in our corridor. Please wait on these seats, and only enter the clinic once welcomed by your therapist where you will be asked to take your own and your childs temperature. A temperature above 37.5 will result in a cancelled session. Thankyou for following these new procedures to help us slow the spread and for bearing with us through the uncertainty of COVID-19. We cannot wait to see you all back here in the coming days!

12.01.2022 2020 has delivered the biggest upheaval in the way we as Occupational Therapists provide therapy to our communities. We demonstrated resilience as we responded to the rapidly evolving restrictions that the COVID-19 pandemic presented us. By adapting therapy delivery to an online platform, we were able to continue providing therapy, support, engagement and social connection with our community during the height of the restrictions. We are very grateful we had the ability to u...tilise technology and gain peer support that enabled us to continue to provide service to our CCOT families during these testing times. Thank you to all of our families and fellow OT’s who supported us during this time. 08.01.2022 As #OTWeek2020 comes to a close we asked our amazing team of Occupational Therapists one question.... "Why do you love being an Occupational Therapist?" Sarah ... " I love OT because I get to spend my day getting to know and connecting with children to make a difference in their lives. There is nothing more rewarding than finishing your day knowing you have impacted someone’s life in a positive way and supported them through their journey. " Bec M " 'Find a job you enjoy, and you will never have to work a day in your life.' This absolutely sums up how I feel about being an OT! I strongly believe in promoting equality for all individuals, and as an OT my role focuses on promoting independence and participation in meaningful activities, to give my clients the same opportunities to participate and engage in day-to-day activities as their peers. Occupational therapy is about supporting people to achieve goals which are meaningful to them, and I love being able to see and be a part of kids progressing towards goal achievement. " Jade "I love developing strong therapeutic connections with families-becoming an important player in their child’s therapy journey is truly an honour. I love sharing in the joy and excitement as a child shares with me that they’ve achieved a goal they’ve worked so hard on. As an OT, no two days are the same, no two hours are the same! I love the variety of the work we do- every goal, diagnosis, environment and treatment approach is different...sparking my creativity each and every day!" Bec B "Occupational therapy is a holistic profession we support people develop physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually. As an OT I get to help children and adolescents of all abilities participate in meaningful activities - from learning to play, socialise and form friendships, school readiness or reach individualised goals. Each child’s goals are different and unique and therefore so is my day to day work and that’s what I love about my job."
