24.01.2022 SEVERE WEATHER WARNING FOR ALL OF TASMANIA FOR DAMAGING WINDS. Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology For people in King Island, Furneaux Islands, Western,... Upper Derwent Valley, South East, North East, East Coast, North West Coast, Central North, Central Plateau and Midlands Forecast Districts. Issued at 10:12 am Saturday, 29 August 2020. DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS ACROSS TASMANIA DURING SUNDAY. Weather Situation: Strong northwesterly winds develop across Tasmania during Sunday as a cold front approaches from the west. The gusty front crosses the state early Sunday evening, with strong southwesterly winds to follow. DAMAGING NORTHWESTERLY WINDS, averaging 60 to 70 km/h with gusts around 100 km/h, are possible across Tasmania during Sunday. The damaging winds are expected to develop around midday on Sunday, then contract to northwest Tasmania during Sunday evening as the winds shift southwesterly. Gusts in excess of 100 km/h are likely about elevated terrain. Note that soils across much of eastern Tasmania are saturated. This may result in an increased likelihood of trees falling over in high winds. Locations which may be affected include Devonport, Burnie, Launceston, St Helens, Swansea, Strahan, New Norfolk and Hobart. The State Emergency Service advises that people should: * Supervise children closely. * Check that family and neighbours are aware of warnings. * Manage pets and livestock. * Secure outdoor items including furniture and play equipment. * Be prepared in case of power outages and report any outages to TasNetworks on 132 004. * Beware of damaged trees and power lines and take care when driving. * Listen to the ABC radio or check www.ses.tas.gov.au for further advice. * For emergency assistance contact the SES on 132500. The next Severe Weather Warning will be issued by 5:00 pm AEST Saturday. Warnings are also available through TV and Radio broadcasts, the Bureaus website at www.bom.gov.au or call 1300 659 210. The Bureau and State Emergency Service would appreciate warnings being broadcast regularly.

19.01.2022 With 14 serious injuries and three deaths occurring on our roads in the last two weeks alone, police and our emergency services counterparts at Tasmania Fire Se...rvice, Ambulance Tasmania and Tasmania SES are calling on Tasmanians to take road safety seriously. This year weve had 21 fatal and 155 serious injury crashes on our roads. In the same period last year, we had 17 fatalities and 143 serious injuries. These arent just statistics, each crash is at least one life thats been taken, or irreversibly impacted. Police talk about the Fatal Five; speeding, not wearing seatbelts, alcohol and drugs, fatigue and distraction because people die on our roads for those reasons. Please slow down, wear your seatbelt, rest if youre tired and dont drive distracted or under the influence of drugs or alcohol. As always, police will be out patrolling roads across the state and enforcing our road rules, but we need Tasmanians to help us by doing their bit and keeping themselves and other road users safe. Some road safety tips: Never drive faster than the speed limit, and if conditions are wet, dark or frosty, slow down and travel at a speed that feels safe and allows plenty of time to stop quickly and safely. Be aware roads can become slippery and drive accordingly. Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the vehicle ahead. Dont allow distractions like mobile phones to affect your judgement and reaction times. Drive with headlights on when visibility is poor.

15.01.2022 A handy hint for flood preparation - did you know that duct tape and plastic can be used instead, or with sandbags to prevent water flowing into your house or b...usiness? When applied well around window and door frame gaps, this method can be just as effective as sandbags, which aren’t always available and aren’t waterproof. The attached video shows how to seal these areas to give yourself more protection. Visit www.ses.tas.gov.au for more tips on preparing for floods.

06.01.2022 Today is an ANZAC Day like no other. At dawn we paused to remember those who have served in the Australian Defence Force, both at home and abroad. Pictured is... this mornings compliance check briefing in north west Tasmania - ADF members standing alongside their colleagues from Tasmania Police, Tasmania Fire Service, and Tasmania SES. These members continue to ensure the safety of North West Tasmanians, both by making sure people are complying with quarantine requirements and checking on peoples welfare in these unprecedented times. The NW Multi-Agency Task Force has conducted more than 5000 of these checks in the last month working seven days a week. Today our ADF members would usually be reflecting on the past in the presence of their mates, said Task Force Coordinator Senior Sergeant Adam Spencer. Instead, they are in the field looking after the safety of Tasmanians. If you are in quarantine and get a call from them today please remember they are there to check on you and your welfare. Some of these diggers have only recently returned from other duties. Make sure you thank them for their service. Lest we forget.
