16.01.2022 Goodbye blackberries

16.01.2022 Are you preparing your property for the coming fire season? Do you have rows of Conifers around your property, house or maybe lining your driveway? Have you giv...en a thought about their flammability and what happens to them when they catch fire? Conifers are really good at being a wind break but can be explosive in a fire. This is due to the high oil content in the foliage and the amount of dry and dead leaf litter that accumulates up the centre of them. If your driveway is lined with Conifers you may be at risk of being trapped on your property or if you have them around your house you could be completely surrounded by an intense wall of fire and embers, costing you your house and even your life. To make your Conifer row safer, keep the tree clear of foliage at least 1.5-2m from the ground and keep grass around them short. This will help prevent a fire from climbing into the dry foliage and turning your Conifers into a row of matches. And please remember: if you are planning on removing the trees altogether, please check with your local council regarding any permit requirements. (video courtesy of Mount Macedon CFA)
