23.01.2022 During the COVID community lockdown, Kaltukatjara Rangers Andrew and Bernard were very lucky to get to travel to Nunin which is near Pantu (Lake Amadeus). They went there to see what the track was like as Ranger Tracey wanted to do a school trip with the Areyonga kids to Nunin. They drove from Kaltuktjara across to Watarrka. The track was very bad so they decided it wouldn't be safe to take kids here on a school trip. ... Wasting no opportunity, the rangers did a lot of exploring looking for kapi (water) places based on old hand drawn maps that traditional owners made in the 1980’s. They found some really nice places and took GPS coordinates and photographs to bring back to the old people in community. The rangers also looked for a place called Purku but they couldn't find it. (When they got home, they found out that they had been only 100m away from Purku when they gave up! Exploring in the desert can be like that - so close and yet so far away!) The Kaltukatjara Rangers also placed a remote camera at Nunin to see what animals were visiting. From the photos they learned that a fox is living there. Also a clever Kanka (crow) brought a water bottle to the waterhole, but it didn't fill it up. They also saw Tjurki on the camera, the owlet nightjar. Rangers were excited to see him as he isn't around much at the moment.
23.01.2022 Over summer the Kaltukatjara Rangers placed a remote camera at a waterhole called Piyultjara. This water never dries up so you can always find waru (black-footed rock wallaby). The waru is a vulnerable species due to predators like feral cats and foxes, as well as habitat decline by livestock.
20.01.2022 Did they sell you an unaffordable phone plan?
19.01.2022 Our Tjakura Rangers are helping the Voyages resort and Desert Wildlife Services with their annual wildlife survey at Yulara. This brush-tailed mulgara, or murtja in Pitjantjatjara, may look sweet, but she's a carnivorous marsupial and close cousin to the quoll and Tasmanian devil. She had no problem reminding her human friends who's boss, with teeth! Mulgara are a vulnerable species in the Northern Territory due to feral cats and habitat decline. ... Check out the "mohawk" of black hairs on her orange tail. After checking her pouch, this healthy female was gently released to return to her burrow among the spinifex.

03.01.2022 Congratulations to Marlene Rubuntja, who took home a Lofty Award this weekend! Marlene is also the inaugural Vincent Lingiari Art Award winner. "This year’s Lofty Award goes to an artist whose practice is embedded deeply in humour, story, generosity and place. With a profound insight into the complex issues of life in Central Australia this artist has found a way through art, to celebrate the beauty, question the injustices, and showcase the unique resilient spirit of Central Australia."
02.01.2022 Near Kaltuktjara (Docker River) there is a women's place called Tjawata, part of the Kungka Kutjara Tjukurpa (two women's dreaming). This is also where you find kaltuka, large ants which can really hurt you. Here there are some very special and rare pilpira (ghost gum), you cant find them in many other places. Every few years women rangers go out and cut all the invasive buffel grass around the trees so the gums don’t catch alight in those really hot wildfires. ... The rangers protected 14 trees and took GPS data for mapping, so they know which ones need to be done again after some good rains.
