25.01.2022 Being active supports mental wellbeing. Did you know that in Brisbane there are a number of affordable ways to get more active? ______ As part of Brisbane City Councils Active and Healthy initiative, there are low cost and free options to join classes and events across the city. https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/whats-on/active-healthy From Thai Chi to Yogalates, the choice is endless. ______... Other options include searching local Brisbane Meetups https://www.meetup.com/en-AU/cities/au/brisbane/ Meetup allows people to start a group about anything. Search through and see if one of these groups might share your interest or spark your interest. If there isnt a group that appeals then why not start your own? ______ . . . . . . . . . #beactive #QMHW #mhweek #getmoving #brisbanecity #mentalhealthweek2018 #activeparks #brisbane #brisbanecitycouncil See more

23.01.2022 A weekend of professional development. So privileged to meet Dr Janina Fisher, an expert in the trauma field. "Much like planting and tending a garden, internal attachment-building involves patience, repetition, and a deep conviction that healing is normal, natural and cannot be rushed. It requires only the right "soil" and patient, compassionate "gardeners" to evoke innate healing tendencies in even the most wounded of living beings.". ~ Dr Janina Fisher ___________ Healing... the Fragmented Selves of Trauma Survivors: Overcoming Internal Self-Alienation __________ . . . . . . . . . . #trauma #dissociation #parts #healing #therapy #janinafisher See more

23.01.2022 Celebrate the joys of imperfection! ______ Resist the urge to strive for unrealistic standards, as this undoubtedly contributes towards distress and disappointment. What do the high standards give you? What are the benefits? What are the origins of this pattern? What does this pattern cost you? Is this affecting your relationships because you apply the same high standards to other people? ______ Awareness and loosening of these standards is possible. Reduce your expectation...s. Be kind to yourself and use encouraging statements to let yourself off the hook. Start with small changes that shake things up at home and work. Noticing the urge to keep striving, pausing, and telling yourself youve done enough. The CCI workbooks can be useful resources to help you with making the change https://www.cci.health.wa.gov.au//Looking-Af/Perfectionism This pattern can be very tricky to shift, as it has usually been there for years. A therapist can provide additional support to help you to make long-lasting change and reap the benefits. Free yourself up from being a slave to these standards. See more

22.01.2022 In case you are self-isolating due to guidance from the government, here are some useful tips on things you can do to support your mental health. Remember to make contact with a professional if you are concerned.

22.01.2022 A nice short Norwegian film about tackling the punitive messages from our inner critic.

21.01.2022 I often see individuals expressing frustration at the self-defeating patterns they slip into in the workplace. Schema Therapy offers a useful framework to increase your awareness of your own emotional patterns, how these impact upon relationships, and how to make positive change. Here is an interesting article about taking a schema approach with business leaders

19.01.2022 Its Monday. You might be planning for the week, thinking about what you need to do to feel accomplished. If I asked you to take time to just sit, you might say, "I cant just sit, I have too much to do. If I sit then thats just lazy." In this world of busyness, being comfortable with just sitting is exactly what we should be prioritising on that To-Do List. It struck me when I saw my 7 year old close her book after one page of reading. Technology seems to make it harder t...hese days for us to maintain focus. She told me that her mind was just zipping around. This article makes for an interesting read on this point. Even if you dont practice formal meditation. You could still benefit from taking more time to just sit. "The one thing technology cant teach us is how to make the best use of technology, how to keep our sanity in the face of technology. For that, we cant go online." #sit #quiet #brisbanepsychologist #awareness #mindful #presentmoment

17.01.2022 Who else grew up listening to this? Take a mindful listen. "I started listening to this and the world around me stopped for a moment."

15.01.2022 Queensland Mental Health Week is an annual event that aims to increase awareness and interest in positive mental health and wellbeing across the state. World Mental Health Day is held during the week on 10 October. ______ The theme for 2018 is to value mental health with six steps *Be active do what you can, enjoy what you do, get moving and improve your mood... *Keep learning embrace new experiences, recognise opportunities, surprise yourself *Connect talk, listen, be there *Give your time, your words, your presence *Take notice remember the simple things that give you joy *Care for our planet its the home we all share ________ This years theme is informed by the Wheel of Wellbeing to encourage people to be inspired by six actions that have been proven to improve wellbeing in everyday life. Lets work together to promote positive mental health and wellbeing at home, at work, and at play. We can help break down the stigma associated with mental illness and encourage people in our communities who need help to reach out and connect. ________ . . . . . . . . . . #QMHW #valuementalhealth #mentalhealthweek2018 #wellbeing #health #brisbanepsychologist #brisbane #clinicalpsychologist

14.01.2022 Break the pattern. Try something different. We are creatures of habit but we can also make a change. Write down the pattern you notice and any barriers to change. 13.01.2022 A great read. Children and adolescents unconsciously begin to disconnect from their inner experience and emotions if there are costs associated with doing so within their environment. This suppression and disconnection can have so many negative effects on the persons future relationships and capacity to cope with lifes curve balls.

13.01.2022 Lets all work to break down the stigma around mental health issues and highlight the importance of seeking help. Business executive Ryan Bonnici was transparent and open about his appointments with his Psychologist, sending a clear message to his employees that this was a valuable and important way to use his time. Article: https://www.nbcnews.com//being-open-about-my-mental-health

12.01.2022 I have observed the great challenge that can arise when we stop listening to our heart. We can begin to reside in our head, buying in to the many stories our minds continuously weave. It leads to self doubt, confusion, and a disconnect between our actions and our core values. Reconnecting to the peace that resides within can be a valuable practice in stepping back from our thoughts and gaining clarity.

11.01.2022 Schema Therapy and COVID-19. Looking forward to listening to this podcast hot off the press from Advanced Schema Therapists and Trainers Chris Hayes & Rob Brockman.

10.01.2022 Interview with Wendy Behary & Amee Quiriconi. The deep wounds that can exist after being in a relationship with a narcissist (someone that is self-interested, has an excessive need for admiration and lacks empathy or consideration of others).

09.01.2022 As many of you know, I have been away on leave for 4 weeks. I arrived back in Australia this weekend and I am currently getting organised ready for a busy week in the clinic. I cant wait to begin using my new schema, mode and core needs flash cards all the way from the UK. Thank you Sapphire @bearinmind.psychology These beautifully illustrated tools with definitely help my clients and support the important work we do together. To all my wonderful clients, I look forward to seeing you soon and will reply to your messages this week. Thank you for your patience.

08.01.2022 Something to ponder when making those new year resolutions.... "Humans do not have overly complicated needs. Given the time to contribute to our communities (through work or otherwise), to enjoy time alone in a pleasant state of idleness, to appreciate the company of friends and loved ones, and with a little extra time to focus on creativity, life can become purposeful and satisfying."

07.01.2022 I love this. Christmas 2018 - may we be grateful!

06.01.2022 Its hard as parents to see our children face emotional pain and suffering. We cant protect them from everything that life throws their way and that wouldnt serve them well in the long run. To support their development of resilience and wisdom, as parents we can just be there for them, instilling a sense of safety, encouraging them to face the pain, whilst supporting them through it. I love Dr Justin Coulsons quote - "Teach your kids to love the hills."

06.01.2022 A great Ted talk from Aisling about moving towards a life worth fighting for. If you like this talk then Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) is worth exploring. Contact the clinic if youd like to know more.

06.01.2022 We need to spread the word about these sorts of initiatives. Ideas like this could save lives.

05.01.2022 Will we all be running out to grab a copy of Brene Browns new book - Dare to Lead?

05.01.2022 I will be looking forward to watching this.

04.01.2022 It is possible to remember traumatic events 20 or 30 years after the event. The brain and the body recall the terror that was experienced.

04.01.2022 "Just by holding this child gently, we are soothing our difficult emotions and we can begin to feel at ease."

03.01.2022 Instead of turning up the volume on the inner critic and that negative internal dialogue, why not listen and accept that it too is part of you. By listening and accepting its presence, it avoids that internal battle. Even when we listen and accept, we dont need to buy into the messages that internal dialogue is feeding us. We could then get practising a new way of responding - the courage habit. Dr Dennis Tirch shared this article on his page and it makes for some interesting reading.

02.01.2022 As a parent of 4 and 7 year old girls I am often faced with the chaos, with all the emotional ups and downs. I could benefit from drawing on these emotion-focused coaching statements to help me be the calm amongst the chaos. Children benefit from learning that as a caregiver you will be there for them, these big feelings are messengers telling them and the people around them something really important, the feelings wont last forever, and there is no such thing as a bad emotion.

02.01.2022 Sounds like a nice way to travel!

01.01.2022 The next one to add to my book list. Anyone else read Matts earlier book Reasons to Stay Alive? An honest, descriptive and fascinating account from Matts personal experiences of anxiety and depression. Now I just need to schedule some time to read My husband smiles at my growing In-tray of books. I have even bought a book on Learning to Speed Read, in an effort to get through them faster. I just need to read it
