23.01.2022 Congratulations Brenden

23.01.2022 This year an unusual double entry was selected as an Archibald Prize finalist - Ernest Brothers, by artists Digby Webster and Neil Tomkins. We were lucky enough to have Digby walk us through his process and take us on a visit to see his work at the Art Gallery of New South Wales. #IDPwD

07.01.2022 DAVID Conway might not be able to surf, rock climb or play sport like he used to, but the Mackay man has found a passion in art to carry him through the hard ti...mes. On February 19, 2004, Mr Conway’s life changed forever. He fell 20m to the ground while rock climbing and was left completely blind and paralysed from the chest down. He was only 20 years old at the time of the accident. Despite the constant challenges he has faced over the years, Mr Conway has remained positive, painting in his spare time and even writing a collection of unique quotes. Early Morning Inspiration, Mr Conway’s debut book, features those quotes and has already inspired readers across the region. I have had people tell me how they read my book when they are having a bad day and it makes them feel better, Mr Conway said. All I really want to do at the end of the day is to help people with my story, so I’m glad I can do that. Mr Conway said he first picked up a paintbrush three months after returning home from a 15-month stint in hospital. He was adjusting to life in a wheelchair, with limited vision, and needed something to take his mind off the pain. Starting with charcoal, Mr Conway’s vision has improved slightly over the years and now he can paint with vibrant colours. My doctor said the way my vision has improved is kind of a miracle, he said. Most people with a similar injury lose their vision completely and it never returns. I feel extremely lucky that I can still see shapes and colours. You can buy a copy of Early Morning Inspiration at the Artist Collective shop in Caneland Central. The shop, which features many of Mr Conway’s artworks, opened last week and is a space where 11 local artists show their creations. #DavidConway #EarlyMorningInspiration #MackayArtist #MkyArts #CanelandCentral #CanelandArtistCollectiveShop Story originally published in Daily Mercury 15 Jan 2020 by Rainee Shepperson.
