24.01.2022 **Take ACTION!!!** Happy Monday everyone. Today we need to do a call to action on Laminitic risk horses and their management. There is sooooo much laminitis around our area at the moment. We’ve been consulting with our farrier with probably 3-4 cases a week for weeks now. So please let’s take action TODAY ... 1 Assessment - if you think your horse is at risk = Vet & Farrier. 2 Treatment/ management= Vet, Farrier, Medication & diet. Not one component above on its own will recover your horse, it is the combination of factors to bring your horse back to being healthy and happy. Below are some pictures of grazing and hay management options for laminitic risk horses and even overweight horses. - slow hay feeders come in many forms; bags, nets and bucket types. - strip grazing paddocks with a hot wire divider. - grazing muzzles. 24.01.2022 Have you had your New Year planner out and marked down your next shows???? Do these include Autumn and Winter shows or are you afraid of the long haired coat or the hard work of 10 rugs?? Excessive rugging and constant stabling is never good for your horse. Equilume masks can make all of this easier for you. We use them extensively here on our breeding mares but they also work on maintaining the summer coat through the winter months (among other benefits). They do this b...y mimicking a long summer’s day, stimulating seasonal hormones, including prolactin, that allow your horse to produce a shiny summer coat. Equilume masks must be on by the 21st Jan. Summer: In order to prolong the summer coat, day length must be maintained at 16 hours of light and 8 hours of darkness, from the summer solstice onwards. Light should be fitted prior to January 21st (Southern Hemisphere) in order for the summer coat to be maintained. 19.01.2022 Spring really has SPRUNG and the local feed is just incredible..how fortunate we are to have this amount of feed. HOWEVER for our at-risk laminitc horses this time can be deadly. Please, please, please check your horses and start getting them off this hugely high sugar and starch pasture and onto some safe forages; teff, rhodes, digit. And remember that if theyre allowed on the pasture(not too severe) then off by 9-10am in the morning- the easiest way to remember why we do ...this is because when the suns out, the plant is growing therefore this is his most potent time for the horse- highest starch and sugar time, during the day. Also the wonderful Equine nutritionist Dr Nerida Richards has done 2 live sessions on safe forages for laminitics which has answered some great questions.
