Balancing your personal budget is getting easier, thanks to a growing number of smartphone apps designed to save you time and money, not to mention stress. ASIC's TrackMySPEND is a basic, easy-to-use app to track your weekly, fortnightly or monthly budget. You key in your expenses as you go and you can even flag them as "need" or "want" to help you prioritise and identify areas of potential savings. You ca...n export the data to a spreadsheet where it can be shared with accounting software. Pocketbook is probably the best-known Australian-made budgeting app. One advantage is that you can connect it with your bank accounts and credit cards, but if you use a smaller bank or credit union you may have to manually enter data as you do with most other apps. You can tag expenses in your bank account and the app will use this to work out your monthly spend. It also offers automatic bill notification and it can mark expenses as "tax important". Goodbudget uses the envelope system to organise and track your spending and couples can share their budget across multiple devices. The free version gives you 10 buckets across two devices but you have to pay for more. YNAB (You Need a Budget) is a US-based app that costs $US5 a month, but judging by people interviewed for this article it has some keen local users. It is also based on the envelope system and the concept of giving every dollar a job so you don't accidentally spend next month's rent on clothes. If you go over budget in one category, you can cover it with some of your "fun" category.
