But exposure t...o atmospheric pollutants is much more difficult to control. Who would have thought that in Australia (the cleanest air in the world when there's no bush fires according to the Woolcock Institute of Respiratory Medicine) that we would have to wear masks to filter our air! It’s a daily reality for so many of us in the last few months. Wherever you are in our poor besieged country, if you are pregnant and near bush fires, please take care to avoid as much smoke inhalation as possible. We now know that the placenta does not prevent a fetus from absorbing small particles. So you need to wear a close fitting mask that filters small particles and where possible stay indoors and use air conditioning units that recirculate the air. If you don’t have an air conditioner consider placing portable air cleaners in the home.
