25.01.2022 Did you miss it?? Hanna Putz and Andrzej Steinbach, exhibiting artists in CCP's current show 'No True Self', took part in a PHOTO LIVE conversation with exhibition curator David Ashley Kerr on Thursday 17 September. Luckily for those who didn't catch the live feed, the recording lives on on the #photo2021 Facebook feed. You can see our online presentation of 'No True Self' at https://ccp.org.au/exhibitions/all/no-true-self, where you'll also find a link to the PHOTO LIVE talk between Hanna, Andrzej & David. 25.01.2022 Mohini Chandra, Miriam Charlie, Cherine Fahd, Katrin Koenning, Pilar Mata Dupont, Tom Nicholson and Elvis Richardson, curated by Pippa Milne: 'CCP Declares: On the Social Contract, exhibited 27 May 10 July 2016 at #ccp. The artworks featured in this #fromthearchive group exhibition examine or extend the idea of social contract theory; the concept that moral and political obligations and rights are bound upon an intrinsic agreement amongst the various constituents of a so...ciety. The fragility and power dynamics of our social agreements have recently been exposed by the Bla(c)k Lives Matter movement/s both nationally and overseas. As a mainstream public finally starts to recognise the ongoing work of organisers, there are many opportunities for action. Melbourne has recently owed a lot to the Warriors of the Aboriginal Resistance for their tireless organising. Many resources can be found at https://www.facebook.com/WARcollective. 25.01.2022 It exists only for me, he writes. For you, it would be nothing but an indifferent picture. Roland Barthes on the 'Winter Garden' portrait of his mother. #sundayreading returns with Joanna L. Cresswell's review of 'Keeper of the Hearth' by Odette England. In the book, the Australian-British artist reaches out to over 200 Photography-based artists seeking a response to Roland Barthes' 'Winter Garden' photograph an image of Barthes' mother that he never reproduced or shared publicly. In her essay-like response to the book, Cresswell details the diversity in these responses, and unpacks the theory and philosophy behind the 'Winter Garden' image (peppered with example images from England's text). 25.01.2022 "Byngs description of '(indistinct chatter)' as an improvised duet is unlikely to take viewers by surprise. Subtle cues the intermittent piano score chiming as if tuning or warming up; the slight sense of caution in Byng and her fathers hands point to how the artists are discovering their movements alongside the audience." Arini Byng's video work '(indistinct chatter)' is available for the first time in its entirety online as part of CCP's 'Moving Images' series. The exhibition can be accessed via the #linkinbio, or through ccp.org.au on a desktop. Have a read and watch the work in full! 24.01.2022 Paul Adair, Fleur van Dodewaard, Andrew Hazewinkel, Arini Byng and Georgia Hutchison, Stephanie Lagarde and Stein Ronning: 'Lit from the Top: Sculpture through Photography’, exhibited 24 April 28 June 2015 at #ccp. CCP shows and celebrates 'lens-based practices', but what does this mean when other mediums interject? #fromthearchive, the 2015 group exhibition 'Lit from the Top' used the work of seven local and international artists to consider the ways in which sculpture a...nd photography intersect in contemporary art practice. Curated by Laura Lantieri and Sarah Wall, the exhibition explored the interplay between photography and sculpture, image- and object-making, and how these artists mediate and reimagine each medium through the prism of the other from sculptures re-presented as photographs, to photographs rendered as sculpture. 23.01.2022 Polixeni Papapetrou: 'A Performative Paradox’, exhibited 24 May 14 July 2013 at #ccp. This #fromthearchive post revisits a 2013 exhibition of the iconic artist and founding member of CCP, Polixeni Papapetrou. In 'A Performative Paradox', selected by Professor Anne Marsh in consultation with the artist, a particular thread has been selected across Papapetrou's practicethat of the performativefrom her early documentary work through to her directorial work with her childre...n from 2002 to the present-day. 'A Performative Paradox' presents Papapetrou's earlier, perhaps lesser-known, black and white work in the context of her highly-regarded staged photography, and includes previously unseen images from Papapetrou's early series, such as 'Suzie', pictured. 22.01.2022 ON EXHIBITION NOW "The main thing is... they should be talking very close to all those people that are involved in those camps. If those houses are allocated, seven houses to each camp, thats the way those houses should be going. They shouldnt be playing politics with Aboriginal people." Garrwa, Gurdanji senior elder and cultural advisor Jack Green on the housing crisis in Borroloola, 2015. This month, 'Moving Images' casts our eyes, ears and minds back to a critical ...and compelling series from the CCP archive: Garrwa, Yanyuwa artist Miriam Charlies 'My Country No Home'. Charlies works, comprising documentary shots, portraits and voice recordings, were exhibited in 'CCP Declares: On the Social Contract' between 27 May and 10 July 2016. 22.01.2022 SUNDAY READING In 'A Lucky Survival and Thereafter', artist Haley Millar-Baker's contribution to the latest issue of un Magazine, Millar-Baker maps the trials of a figure only refered to as 'Unknown'. A footnote clarifies: "'Unknown' refers to all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander survivors of invasion that had their identity removed and remain unknown in colonial documents, journals, and museums." In this document of the undocumented, Millar-Baker's prose is paired with a striking series of black and white landscape photographs, enriching the writing both in its relationship to place, and aesthetically. 21.01.2022 Damiano Bertoli, Mathieu Briand, Anouk De Clercq, Marco Fusinato, Pierre Huyghe, Mabel Juli, NASA, Nick Mangan and Matthew Shannon: 'Event Horizon, exhibited 21 May 18 July 2010 at #ccp. This image of a transformed #ccp come from the 2010 Mark Feary curated group show 'Event Horizon'. The exhibition expands out of events in 1969, during which humankind landed on the Moon, and examines how this immediately shifted ideas of philosophical and physical parameters. 20.01.2022 "Photography offers hard evidence of injustice and colonial violence. For those willing to imagine beyond the frame, narrative can either uphold or dismantle illusions of power." CCP's #sundayreading returns this week with an investigation into the photograph as a record, and it's potential either to bolster or challenge colonialism. Yasmine Espert's article, 'Can Photography Be Decolonial?', maps global trends and movements in photographic practices, with careful attention... to illustrative examples that make this a beautiful read. https://www.publicbooks.org/can-photography-be-decolonial/ #sundayreading #decolonisation #ccpconnects See more

This week's #sundayreading sees Dazed Magazine interviewing Ari Marcopoulos on his documentation of the Conrad McRae Youth League Tournament a Brooklyn, New York-based youth basketball comp...etition. 19.01.2022 Jacob Raupach: 'Folding the Periphery, exhibited 2 February 11 March 2018 at #ccp. We're taking this #fromthearchive post to remember what it's like to be in the gallery. This beautiful shot of Jacob Raupach's 2018 solo show 'Folding the Periphery' by our hero exhibition documenter J Forsyth captures a striking tension between inside and outside. 'Folding the Periphery' traces the 960km expanse of rail corridor between Sydney and Melbourne, examining liminal spaces alo...ng the line that house and support extractive industries and link them to the global economic market. Mapping these in-between spaces, 'Folding the Periphery' condenses and collapses the complex material, economic and industrial relationships between regional and metropolitan areas into a mesh of images, videos and sculptures within the gallery space. 19.01.2022 Greatest Hits: 'Faux Thrills’, exhibited 21 May 18 July 2010 at #ccp. Many exhibitions #fromthearchive come with a certain level of explanation text written at the time speaking to imagery, intent, and interpretation. The 2010 exhibition 'Faux Thrills' by 'Greatest Hits', a collective made up of Melbourne-based artists Gavin Bell, Jarrah de Kuijer & Simon McGlinn, was no such exhibition. 'Faux Thrills' was presented, in many ways, in the form of a joke. A glass of cok...e sitting unfinished behind exposed scaffolding, or the hastily torn magazine image tacked to a gallery wall served as punchlines to the set-up of the joke, which was perhaps the event of this exhibition itself. We won't ruin the comedy by over-explaining, but it still makes us crack a smile 10 years on. The series, 'Moving Images', highlights new and existing artworks, from emerging and established artists. We're excited to welcome Ophelia as the third in this series. 07.01.2022 Angelica Mesiti: 'Rapture (silent anthem), exhibited 15 October 12 December 2010 at #ccp. The silent soundtrack accompanying 'Rapture (silent anthem)', this week's #fromthearchive CCP exhibition, serves only to further intensify its already high definition visual content and the senses of those watching it. Shot from a concealed location beneath the stage, Angelica Mesiti's closely cropped and semi-suspended frame delivery rate exposes a mighty emotional fervour building... and releasing through the crowd. Even in this captured still image, one can feel the ways in which 'Rapture' exposes the audience's complex states of longing, belonging and personal spirituality. 06.01.2022 Jim Allen Abel, Wimo Ambala Bayang, Akiq Aw, Agan Harahap and Angki Purbandono: 'Ruang MES 56: Contemporary Photography from Indonesia, exhibited 28 October 11 December 2011 at #ccp. In 2011, Kristi Monfries and Georgie Sedgwick curated a presentation of photographic work from the then-ten-year-old Ruang MES 56 artist collective, who had been spending that decade responding to the cultural forces at play in contemporary Indonesia. Wimo Ambala Bayang was one of the fiv...e artists curated into the show. His photographs, such as the one pictured, critique contemporary political and cultural realities through the prism of Javanese mythology. From the series 'Sleeping Elephant in the Axis of Yogyakarta', this photograph shows an uncanny elephant figure, which is laden with spiritual significance and complicated by its obvious fabrication & precarious posture. The elephant is superimposed in front of Mount Merapi, a site with its own mythological significance in Javanese culture. The spectacle of this image is impactful not just in its symbology, but also its contemporary materiality. Image: Wimo Ambala Bayang, Sleeping Elephant in the Axis of Yogyakarta Series: Mt. 02.01.2022 Phuong Ngo: 'Domino Theory, exhibited 13 April 27 May 2012 at #ccp. 'Domino Theory' is the theory that a political event in one country will cause events in neighbouring countries, like a falling domino causing an entire row of upended dominoes to fall. In this #fromthearchive post, we revisit a 2012 CCP exhibition that saw Melbourne artist Phuong Ngo reinterpret 'Domino Theory' through the key players involved with Communism and the Vietnam War. The series of self por...traits using the faces of political figures and Ngo's own family serves as a consideration of relational dynamics between those who determine war, and those who live with its consequences.
