21.01.2022 CHALLENGES TO THEORISING DIVERSITY CONCEPTUALISING RELIGIOUS DIVERSITY WHILST SWIMMING IN IT IN THE 21ST CENTURY Emeritus Professor, The Rev’d Gary D Bouma AM, Monash University... Date: 28th May, Thursday Time: 6.00pm-8.00pm Venue: Online (zoom link will be provided along with the reading materials upon registration) Registration link: https://www.isra.org.au/theory-time-theorizing-diversity Registration due: 25th May, Monday How are we to think about religion, religious diversity and society in the 21st Century? What we see and experience is not like the 20th, or before. Several certainties from before have disintegrated. A variety of labels are bandied about to describe our era, none of them satisfactory. Several social processes have been identified. It is time to reflect critically and to think collectively about thinking in the now. This session will discuss the role of theory. Basic problem What we think, the images we use to envisage and describe shape what we will see. The role of theory should be to open our eyes to what is happening, to help to frame research questions and to integrate masses of findings into some coherent frame to foster the next round of research which continues the iterative process. Too often theory is seen as some abstruse activity carried on without reference to evidence, or is simply a cute heuristic device which grabs attention but fails to do the work of theory. This webinar will raise these issues, examine several examples of theory and mention a few promising contributions. Participants will be refreshed in critical reading of theory and research. There will be ample opportunity for discussion along the way.

The project was funded by a grant from the Centre for Public and Contextual Theology (PaCT) and was a project of the Colloquium for Ageing Perspectives and Spirituality (CAPS), in the Australian Centre for Christianity and Culture (ACC&C) at Charles Sturt University in association with Catholic Healthcare Ltd.
