21.01.2022 The peak advocacy organisation for people with disability from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds has cautiously welcomed reforms to the NDIS announced last week. The National Ethnic Disability Alliance says while they welcome the changes, the full extent of how the reforms will improve the lives of this group is yet to be seen. 17.01.2022 The NDIA have just released their latest Quarterly Report which covers the three months from 1 July 2020 to 30 September 2020. The insights cover topics including participants and their plans, key trends in complaints, providers and the growing market and financial sustainability.
16.01.2022 Minister Stuart Robert has announced the most significant package of reforms to the NDIS since its establishment. This includes implementation of the Australian Government's Response to last year's independent review of the NDIS (Tune Review) and the new NDIS Participant Service Guarantee. The Government supports all of the recommendations of the Tune Review, and will work to implement reforms over the next six months. Click below to access the full media release on the NDIS website.
16.01.2022 The NDIS Practice Standards and Quality Indicators emphasise that providers need to communicate with participants in the language, mode of communication and terms that they are most likely to understand. This means providers must prove that they understand their participants enough to give them information that makes sense to them. 16.01.2022 Having an Aboriginal carer would allow for Indigenous people with disability to connect more with their culture. However, the disability sector is struggling to make this possible. Indigenous people working in the sector say more needs to be done to address the impediments to Indigenous recruitment for disability work. Training for young indigenous people has already had positive outcomes, providing a taste of the work in the sector and more skills.

14.01.2022 First Nations People are 5 times more likely to live with a disability than non-first nations people. This is a significant barrier for First Nations People, yet their voices and experiences are not adequately being heard in the Disability Royal Commission (DRC). To assist NDIS Providers, and First Nations People with disability to amplify First Nations voices we have compiled some FAQs about making a DRC submission. Submissions will close on 11 September 2020.
13.01.2022 NSW disability groups are relieved that the state government will continue funding advocacy for the next 3 years. The NSW government has committed $13 million a year for advocacy. The news is a win for people with disability who rely on these services and campaigned for the funding.
12.01.2022 Today, 29 September, is World Heart Day. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death in the world. With COVID-19, taking care of our hearts is more important than ever, especially for cardiovascular disease patients. The World Heart Foundation has asked us this year to use heart, for society, your loved ones and you, to beat cardiovascular disease.
12.01.2022 An NDIS participant discovered that one of her providers had continued to claim funds for weeks despite her support worker finishing. The incident highlights the concerns of participants and advocates that there are not enough checks and balances before funds are taken. 11.01.2022 Researchers from the Disability Health unit at the University of Melbourne and UNSW Canberra conducted a survey of disability support workers about working during the pandemic. The findings highlight how the disability sector has been overlooked in COVID-19, especially the safety of disability workers. We have put together an infographic which summarises some of the key findings from the survey.

06.01.2022 The tender closure date for new NDIS applications in Western Australia is fast approaching. The WA Department of Communities Disability Services Provider Panel will only accept new applications until 18 September 2020. Providers who miss the closure date and require evidence of WA Communities compliance will need to wait until 1 December 2020 to apply for registration via the NDIS Commission. 06.01.2022 The Australian Government is currently considering introducing legislation that will require all new housing to be accessible. The Melbourne Disability Institute is conducting a survey of people with disability to identify the benefits of accessible housing. If you're an adult with a physical disability, or if you're assisting an adult with a physical disability, this is a chance to make your voice heard. The survey closes on 26 August. 05.01.2022 The NDIS Quality and Safeguards Commission will receive 100 more staff and $92.9 million extra funding over the next four years. This will enable the Commission to expand its compliance and investigative capacity and start operations in Western Australia. The news is timely as staff have reported that complaints about providers are falling through the cracks because they are overworked and hampered by poor technology and lack of communication.
02.01.2022 There are currently 2 Information, Linkages and Capacity Building (ILC) grant rounds open for providers. Both rounds close at 11am on 8 December 2020. The Social and Community grant funding is for 12-month projects that enable the participation of people with disability in community life. The Economic Participation grant funding is for organisations to help improve the economic participation of people with disability.
