25.01.2022 The amount of sleep needed varies for everyone based on their age, however, the recommended amount is 8 hours a night. Many have difficulty with sleep for different reasons and as insomnia is usually a temporary and treatable problem, here is what you can do to manage it: - Establish a routine to follow before going to bed. - Go to bed to sleep, not to read, eat, or watch television. - Only lie down to go to sleep when you actually feel sleepy. - Do not try too hard to f...all asleep. - Try to settle down before going to bed. Do not: do any work that requires concentration, have a heavy meal, have serious exercise, try to sleep after an emotional upset or argument. - Try to figure out what helps you settle best (red, listen to music, have a bath or shower, meditate) - Have a cup of warm milk. - Avoid drinks containing caffeine and alcoholic beverages. - Do not take naps during the day as falling asleep at night will become more difficult. If the problems do not go away please consult with your GP. Information is taken from John Murtagh's Patient Education.

Limit the amount of butter or margarine on vegetables and bread. Use the minimum of cooking fats. Limit the intake of full-cream products, fried foods, fatty takeaway and snack foods. - EAT LESS SUGAR... Avoid or reduce sweet foods containing processed sugar such as lollies, soft drinks, syrups, biscuits and cakes. - EAT MORE BREADS AND CEREALS, FRUITS AND VEGETABLES - DRINK LESS ALCOHOL Limit alcohol to no more than two drinks a day. Drink with smaller sips each time. Reserve alcohol for specials occasions and to only one occasion in the day. - USE LESS SALT High sodium intake may raise your blood pressure. Use few salty processed foods, including canned vegetables, meats, chips crackers, sauces and meat pastes. - DRINK MORE WATER Perhaps one of the most important tips we can give is to drink more water. 15.01.2022 Tick bites are very annoying, painful and itchy and if not treated properly they can pose a specious health risk and while it is still debatable if Lyme disease diseases from ticks they can still very much cause allergic reactions and infections. To remove a tick: grab it as close as possible to the head with tripped forceps (tweezers with a pointy end) and pull it out with steady, even pressure not jerking or twisting as part of it can break off inside the body. Try not to squeeze the tick too much with the tweezers. Disinfect the bite with rubbing alcohol, soap and water. It is always recommended to get a professional to deal with a tick, we know that most will try to do it at home. However, please visit a GP if you experience symptoms such as fever, skin rash, nausea, headaches etc. Stay safe!

07.01.2022 1st of December, the Worlds Aids Day. AIDS Organisations are trying to get Australians to educate themselves about the HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus). The virus is transmitted through bodily fluids and if left untreated, the virus attacks the body's immune system and makes the body vulnerable to illnesses it could normally control. Many view this virus as an epidemic of the 80s and 90s however almost 37 million people live with the condition today. James Gray, with the Au...stralian Federation of AIDS, said, "People with HIV achieved something really, really fantastic and changed the way that we do health and public health around the world by being leaders in responding to an issue that really affected them and driving the change. We need to continue to reflect on and listen to people with HIV and those communities that are affected by HIV. They've shown tremendous leadership, and, by listening to that leadership, that's how we'll finally end the epidemic for good." See more

04.01.2022 Many people experience travel sickness and with so many going away for the Christmas and New Year during the school holidays, it may ruin the beginning of a pleasant experience of the trip with the symptoms of travel sickness. Here are a few ways to avoid it: - Keep calm and relaxed before the trip. (With children, avoid excitement and apprehension about travelling, encourage activities such as looking at distant objects, discourage activities such as reading and games that ...require close, visual concentration.) - Lie down, if possible, because this rests the inner ear canals and reduce the urge to vomit. If travelling by car stop regularly for breaks. The passenger with travel sickness should be in the front seat, if possible. - Do not have a large meal a few hours before the journey or during, avoid milk and fried or greasy foods. However, don't travel with an empty stomach, have a light, simple meal one hour before. Consult with your GP if the symptoms worsen so they can prescribe you with medication. See more
