25.01.2022 As a community, we are facing an unprecedented challenge in the wake of COVID-19. Bishop Michael McKenna asks us to care for our neighbours in this challenging ...time, as we have that responsibility now more than ever. We understand that vulnerable people, especially the elderly members of our community, need our attention and care at this time. In response, a new program called Careline will commence operation in the Cathedral Parish, Bathurst and St James Parish, Blayney over the next few days, with the intention to roll out the program in parishes across the Diocese in the coming weeks. This is a practical program that aims to connect people who may need a hand with a support network made up of people who can help. It may be as simple as picking up some groceries or a prescription for someone who is housebound, or it may be that the person needs assistance to connect with other agencies such as St Vincent de Paul, said Bishop McKenna. If you know someone who is elderly or in a vulnerable position, who may live alone, those who are self-isolated without any support, or anyone who may just need a chat, or if you are in this position yourself, I urge you to contact Careline and reach out for help, said Bishop Michael. To contact Careline, phone 1800 231 118 or email [email protected]. Find out more information here: http://www.bathurst.catholic.org.au/

24.01.2022 St Edwards Canowindra Connect with God and Earth Year 6 students at St Edwards Canowindra recently enjoyed a Laudato Si retreat. Led by Catholic Environmental educator Jen Ringbauer, students investigated their connection with God, responded to the encyclical of Pope Francis and were challenged to be responsible in equitable use of resources. Local artist Christine Holmes observed and recorded the students actions, responses and thoughts during the day. From this retreat in collaboration with Christine the students will now go on to create a beautiful Laudato Si mural on the school grounds, we cannot wait to see the finished result!

23.01.2022 This COVID-19 environment has taught us all a few new tricks. Last week I used Zoom and spoke to a Year 3 class at St Marys Catholic School at Orange NSW. The ...brilliant teachers are Mrs Cheree Pell and Mrs Karen Proudford and the very proud principal is Mrs Kerry Maher. The star of the show is Miss Ivy Wynne. I was invited to speak to the class about ANZAC Day via this extraordinary medium. Each child had their own individual screens and I answered questions from many students (individually). I could see every student in little squares on my iPad. Brilliant. The teacher took a few pics and I think this one with Ivy listening intently to me on the screen rambling on is a beauty. I urge the Department of Education to investigate the possibility of incorporating Zoom in the annual curriculum say twice yearly whereby veterans could be approached to do this with a school class on ANZAC Day and Remembrance Day. It would be a winner and more thought-provoking than perhaps looking at a text book which generally can be dismissed. I couldnt believe the extraordinary knowledge behind the questions raised by students so young. Big hearty congratulations to all concerned.

22.01.2022 Children from St Josephs Manildra have created their own Holy Week Wreaths while learning from home and at school. AN EASTER MESSAGE from Christina Trimble, Executive Director of Schools As the First Term of the 2020 school year draws to a close we must acknowledge what an extraordinary term it has been. Our principals and teachers have had to be innovative and flexible to navigate the many changes that have occurred in the learning environment as a result of COVID-19. We th...ank our families who have faced many challenges including supporting their children in remote learning. This Easter Sunday, we celebrate the resurrection of our Lord. The death of Jesus on Good Friday is not the last word nor the end of the story. Resurrection is the ultimate word of God about life and death. In the current environment Pope Francis asks of us to ...be generous. Let us help those in need in our neighbourhood. Let us look out for the loneliest people, perhaps by telephone or social networks. Let us pray to the Lord for those who are in difficulty.... Our united experience of fear may help us to look at the suffering of the most vulnerable and to respond with compassion. Lets make a real effort to be the face of Gods love to all as we celebrate Easter this year. I wish you a Happy and Holy Easter!

18.01.2022 A Message from Christina Trimble, Executive Director of Schools, as Students begin to return to the Classroom.... THANK YOU FOR THE CONTRIBUTION OF PARENTS It is a well-known Catholic teaching that parents are the primary and principal educators of their children (Declaration on Christian Education,1965). Parents have a particularly important part to play in the educating community, since it is to them that primary and natural responsibility for their childrens educatio...n belongs. (The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium, 1997). During the COVID-19 crisis, when the Premier requested that parents keep their children at home rather than send them to school, this theological tenet has been made real in the lives of parents across the Diocese. While our teachers and school leaders have been acknowledged for their creativity and flexibility in the current crisis, it is now time to acknowledge the wonderful support that schools have received from their families in rising to the challenge of actively supporting their childrens daily learning at home. This has been a difficult time for families. The fluidity of the situation in which we find ourselves makes planning difficult and our familiar routines and certainty are shaken. Parents have had to juggle work and family responsibilities while encouraging their children to stay motivated and complete remote learning activities. We want to say thank you to parents. You are doing a great job! We also want to remind our families that in these uncertain times, financial assistance is available to those who are experiencing levels of financial stress as a result of job loss, business downturn or closure, or reduced working hours, due to the COVID19 pandemic. Families are encouraged to contact their Catholic school for assistance and more information. Schools are looking forward to the gradual return to regular school attendance over the next few weeks. School principals will communicate regularly with parents throughout the term to enable parents to continue to support the school community in its response to this crisis. Thank you for helping us to ensure that our schools are safe places for students, teachers and staff.
